Chapter 187: Chapter 187 Blood Before Bonds

Sylvia’s POV

When the door closed behind them, Mother and I were finally alone. The silence between us felt both heavy and fragile, filled with years of misunderstandings and unspoken emotions. My wolf paced restlessly beneath my skin, sensing the importance of this moment.

"Mother," I began, drawing a deep breath. "I want to apologize for my behavior earlier. I shouldn’t have upset you like that."

Alpha Astra’s face softened, lines of tension easing from around her eyes. She gestured for me to come closer, patting the edge of her hospital bed.

"Sit with me, Sylvia," she said, her voice gentler than I’d heard in years.

I approached cautiously, feeling like I was stepping onto unfamiliar territory despite the fact that this was my own mother. As I perched on the edge of her bed, she reached for my hand, her grip surprisingly strong for someone who’d just regained consciousness.

"We have much to discuss," she said, her eyes searching my face with new awareness. "Starting with the truth about my condition."

The hospital room suddenly felt smaller as I prepared myself for what would likely be the most honest conversation I’d had with my mother in years.

Mother took a deep breath, her eyes focusing on some distant point beyond the sterile white walls. "The doctors have been monitoring a condition I’ve had for some time now," she began. "My body is... rejecting my wolf."

Her words hit me like a physical blow. Among our kind, such a condition was rare and almost always fatal. The symbiosis between human and wolf was the essence of our existence.

"How long have you known?" I asked, my voice barely audible.

"Two years," she admitted. "It’s why I’ve been pushing so hard to secure the future of the Frostfang Pack. My time as Alpha may be more limited than anyone realizes."

The implications of her words crashed over me in waves. Her obsession with solidifying alliances, her desperate attempts to position Selene favorably, even her harsh treatment of me—it all suddenly made a terrible kind of sense.

"Why didn’t you tell me?" The hurt in my voice was impossible to hide.

Mother’s fingers tightened around mine. "Because I needed you strong, not worried about me. And because..." she hesitated, "I wasn’t sure if you were ready for what might come next."

The unspoken question hung between us: was I ready to lead if she couldn’t?

"Mother," I said firmly, needing to clear the air completely. "I need you to understand something. No matter what happens between Caesar and me, my loyalty is to Frostfang Pack first. I would never put our people at risk."

Her eyes widened slightly at my directness. "The Wolf King’s mate holds tremendous power, Sylvia. Power that could eclipse your responsibility to your birth pack."

"No," I insisted, my wolf rising to emphasize my conviction. "I am a daughter of Frostfang before anything else. Caesar understands that, respects it even."

For a long moment, Alpha Astra studied my face, searching for any sign of deception or naivety. Finally, she nodded slowly. "I believe you," she said, surprising me. "Perhaps I’ve underestimated your strength all these years."

The admission sent a wave of emotion through me that I struggled to contain.

"And speaking of strength," Mother continued, shifting topics with practiced ease, "I’m concerned about Selene’s state of mind. That outburst was... unlike her."

I couldn’t help the bitter laugh that escaped my lips. "Mother, that’s exactly like her when she’s not performing for you. Selene has always seen me as competition, as an enemy."

Mother shook her head firmly. "No, you don’t understand. This goes deeper than sibling rivalry."

For the first time in my life, I watched as my formidable mother’s composure cracked, revealing a vulnerability I’d never witnessed before.

"Selene’s parents were my closest friends," she explained, her voice thick with emotion. "During an attack on our territory fifteen years ago, they sacrificed themselves to save me. Their final request was that I raise their daughter as my own."

The revelation stunned me into silence. I’d always known Selene wasn’t my biological sister, but I’d never heard the full story of how she came to join our family.

"I promised them I would love her as my own child," Mother continued, "and I do. But perhaps in trying to honor that promise, I’ve failed both of you in different ways."

She looked at me with tear-filled eyes. "I never wanted there to be this wall between my daughters. I need you both united, especially now."

The plea in her voice was unmistakable, but I couldn’t bring myself to offer false promises.

"Mother, I will always respect what Selene’s parents did for you and our pack," I said carefully. "But Selene and I... there’s too much history. I can promise not to treat her as an enemy, but if she continues to try to harm me or those I care about, I will defend myself."

My mother’s face fell, disappointment evident in the slump of her shoulders. "I suppose that’s all I can ask for now," she sighed.

The conversation had begun with such promise, a rare moment of openness between us, but now a familiar chill had settled back into place. The gap between us hadn’t been bridged completely—perhaps it never would be. Years of misunderstandings and hurt couldn’t be erased in a single conversation, no matter how honest. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Mother leaned back against her pillows, suddenly looking exhausted. "You should go now. Get some rest."

I nodded, rising from my chair. At the doorway, I paused. "For what it’s worth, Mother, I never wanted to be your rival or Selene’s. I just wanted to be your daughter."

I left before she could respond, feeling both lighter and heavier than before. Some truths had been spoken, some wounds acknowledged—but healing would take much longer than a single hospital-room conversation.

As I closed the door behind me, I found Caesar waiting in the hallway, his powerful presence both reassuring and complex. The mate bond hummed between us, a reminder of how much had changed in so little time.

"Are you alright?" he asked, his eyes searching mine.

"No," I admitted honestly. "But I think I will be."
