Chapter 35: Chapter Thirty-five

Butterflies filled my stomach at the sight before me. Wolves of different race, size and gender, getting ready for war. This was... I have no words but something is going to go wrong. I feel it. Conner was giving orders to some other wolves. I had convinced him to let Luna Avery come with our group. Maybe the fates will twist things in our favour? I don’t know. Bile rose from my stomach and I turned and vomited into a bush.

Two warm hands landed on my back, making circular motions. "You’re fine Gemma. Suck it up." Eve said in my ear.

"Leave her alone. Let her process this. It’s her first time going to war. Remember mine?" Caroline said from beside me.

"Of course I do, how can I forget? You almost burnt the whole camp down."

I placed my hands on my knees as I was overcome with dizziness. More food threatened to come back up. I blocked Conner from the bond. He didn’t need this right now. I stood up straight and the place spun for a second before Caroline and Eve came into view.

"The sun is about to set and the battle will begin soon. Are you sure you’re alright." Caroline asked.

I nodded. "Just a few jitters. I’ll be fine." I pressured them. They nodded but still kept an eye on me.

•••

It was time. War was upon us and I just wanted to lie down for the longest nap if my life. The sun had serviced the horizon and the sky was out with beautiful stars. We split up, other alphas to the known base and us a few yards away with Luna Avery who was going to use her powers to follow those who strayed. Her blonde wolf walked in front of us, hiding in the thick foliage of the forest beyond the pack boarders.

Conner was the only one who had not shifted. It would be easier for him to move through the woods in this form. We all his behind and watched as Luna Avery used her powers, her tail slightly wagging back and forth. Conner knelt next to me and run a hand through my white fur. Tingles spread through my body and I relaxed.

"Shift back for now." He commended and we all shifted back. Luna Avery was now kneeling with her hands in the dirt, her eyes closed and face creased.

We waited.

That’s what this was all about, patience. We had to plan this right. Conner made hand motion and the others split up, checking our surroundings. I stayed back with Luna Avery as she did her thing. I placed my hand on my chest when I felt like throwing up again. What did I eat?

"Do you think it’s a good idea to go?" Luna Avery asked with her eyes still closed. I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean you shouldn’t be going to war in your condition." She said looking back at me. What the hell was she going on about?

"What condition?" I asked.

"You’re pregnant." My whole world stopped. You can’t be serious? I’m pregnant! Now? Here? Why? I placed a hand to my stomach.

"How do you know?"

"My gift remember. I can sense three little beings in that belly of yours." She said with a big smile.

"Three?" I asked and she gave me a happy nod.

"The first ever werewolf triplets. How exciting!" As my heart soured with happiness, it also sunk with dread. I was going to war while pregnant. I could lose my babies.

’We will not lose them. We must fight this war but we will protect our children with our lives.’ Winter said in my head.

’So now you decide to butt in?’

’Look Gemma, we are practically one now, separating my thoughts from yours is hard so excuse me who wants to be lazy for a chance.’

’Well we are pregnant. Can you believe that?! I told Conner this would happen.’

’You didn’t complain when you were moa-’

’Do not finish that sentence Winter!’

’Fine. Just don’t disappoint me out there. I’ll always be around.’

’Yeah yeah.’

’I love you Gemma.’

’I love you too Winter, always.’

When I came back, everyone was around me. When did they get here? Luna Avery was muttering some things I couldn’t quite understand. Conner placed a hand on my back and I looked up at him.

I was pregnant with his babies. Wait when I tell him he’ll -

When I tell him. Oh goddess. What am I going to tell him? Just get it out like last time right. It shouldn’t be that hard. I opened my mouth to talk to him but he tensed. His eyes were trained on Luna Avery. She had gone still, her eyes trained on something in the distance. She shifted and was off. I quickly did the same and followed. Thank the goddess children don’t get harmed when we shift.

We followed Luna Avery to a clearing. She stopped a few yards away from it but you could clearly see the parting of the trees. She shifted back.

"There is one person at the front, waiting for you and 150 hunters behind her, seventy in the trees. There is also another person at the very back." Luna Avery informed us.

"Thank you. This is not your battle, go help your mate." Conner told her. She didn’t need to be told twice. She shifted and was gone faster than I could say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

So this is it huh? War. It sucks. I commented through the mind link.

Caroline’s firewood orange and white wolf shook her head. Yes Gemma, this is it and it does not suck. It’s serious.

I snickered and looked at them all. Eve’s wolf was a rich brown with bright electric blue eyes, Ash’s wolf was brown and black, his eyes were a deep green. Jace was more of a steel grey with blue eyes and Caroline’s eyes were dark like Conner’s but his were prettier.

Why are you giving us silent and weird looks? We are not dying. Eve said with a roll of her eyes.

I’m building remorseful silence for my heart felt speech. I said offended.

Well don’t. I feel nervous as it is already. Eve commented with a huff.

Are we really doing this now? Ash asked.

Yes. Answered with the girls.

I’m too old for this. Have grumbled.

You are not even that old! I exclaimed.

Silence! Conner shouted through the link. We all flinched. As much as I’m loving this little conversation, can we please just go?

Conner’s right! Now is not the time. Let’s go whoop some hunter ass and not die doing it! The others cheered after my so called speech and we sobered up.

Move in. Conner linked before leading the way.

Direct contact or stealth? Eve asked.

We should go in direct. I have a feeling they already know we are here. I commented.

We made our way noisily through the woods to the clearing where the hunters where lined up. You wouldn’t guess who was at the front.

"Natasha?" Conner asked.

"Hello alpha. Fancy seeing you here with the mate killer and group." She said. She had changed a lot. She was bigger, that much was clear and full of muscle. New scars run down her arms and face, her once long curly hair was now a short afro and her brown eyes were dead. We all shifted to human form.

"You’re mate was psycho." I said with a roll of my eyes. Natasha’s eye twitched. "And suddenly I feel like that wasn’t only on one side of the bond." Natasha growled and was ready to kill me when a voice called out over the large clearing.

"Not yet wolf."

I knew that voice. It haunted my dreams, it sent chills down my spine, it made me think of things I didn’t want to. Things I hoped to forget.

The crowd of hunters parted to let him though. He moved with slow steps, each time his foot hit the ground was like and earthquake in my mind. Dark brown hair and a single brown eye, the other in an eye patch. He was my tormentor, my past, my fear, my demon.

"Gemma, so nice to see you again and my, have you grown. If it wasn’t for my hair and eye colour, you would be a spitting image of your mother." One eyed guy smirked as my heart struggled to keep up.

He didn’t mean... "You’re lying." I said weakly.

"Oh dear daughter, I wish I was. This is quite the reunion though."
