The clicking surrounded them.

Fast.

Erratic.

Closing in through the trees from every direction.

Rain poured across the shattered highway while Maya stood frozen beside the overturned truck, revolver trembling in her hand. The silver creature before them remained perfectly still beneath the lightning flashes, its clusters of human eyes blinking independently across its body.

Watching her.

Studying her.

“Bridge identified,” it repeated softly.

Then the human hands inside its vertical mouth began clawing outward harder, as though something trapped inside the creature was desperately trying to escape.

Ethan suddenly staggered forward.

“Maya...” he whispered weakly. “Don’t let them touch you.”

More shapes moved between the trees.

Silver limbs.

Glowing eyes.

At least six of the creatures circled them now beneath the storm.

Selena pulled a combat knife from her belt slowly.

“We’re not surviving this fight.”

The nearest creature twitched violently at the sound of her voice.

Then it unfolded taller.

Bones cracked beneath its silver flesh as its body stretched upward until it stood nearly nine feet high on spider-like limbs.

Every eye on its torso rotated toward Selena simultaneously.

“Hostility detected.”

Maya fired instinctively.

The bullet tore through one cluster of eyes in an explosion of silver fluid. The creature shrieked—not in pain, but in surprise.

Then all the creatures moved together.

Fast.

Too fast.

One launched from the trees toward Maya in a blur of silver limbs. She barely rolled aside before claws sliced through the truck door where her head had been seconds earlier.

Metal split like paper.

Selena buried her knife into another creature’s leg as it lunged for Ethan. Black-silver blood sprayed across the rain-soaked ground while the thing screamed through a chorus of human voices.

“We remember dying.”

Ethan collapsed against the ditch, clutching his head.

“They’re linked,” he gasped. “One mind across all of them.”

Lightning exploded overhead.

For a split second the entire forest became visible.

And Maya realized the trees were changing.

Silver fungal growth crawled across trunks and branches in spiral patterns, spreading rapidly through the woods around them. The forest itself was being consumed.

Terraforming.

Just like the checkpoint.

A massive screech suddenly echoed through the storm behind the creatures.

The silver hunters froze instantly.

Every eye across their bodies widened.

Fear.

Then something crashed through the forest.

A towering shape burst from the trees and slammed into one of the silver creatures hard enough to shatter bone. Black fungal armor glistened beneath the rain while enormous claws ripped through silver flesh violently.

The Shepherd.

Or what remained of it.

Maya stared in disbelief.

The massive creature roared into the storm while the silver hunters scattered backward, shrieking in alarm.

Parts of the Shepherd’s body were still decaying from the neural core overload. Torn flesh hung beneath broken fungal armor, and one arm dragged uselessly beside it.

Yet it still fought.

Still hunted.

The Shepherd tore another silver creature apart and turned its pale eyes toward Maya.

“RUN!” it thundered.

The forest erupted into chaos.

Silver creatures leapt through the trees while the Shepherd battled them savagely beneath the storm. Black and silver blood sprayed across the woods as impossible alien screams echoed through the night.

Selena grabbed Ethan immediately.

“This way!”

Maya hesitated only briefly before following them into the dark forest beyond the highway.

Behind them, the Shepherd roared again.

Then came another sound.

Deeper.

Vast.

The storm clouds overhead began rotating faster above the forest.

And far above the earth—

The colossal shape hidden inside the clouds started descending lower.
