I Became a Witch in a World Full of Urban Legends
Chapter 5Vol 1. : A New Witch is Born
At half past four in the morning, on the other side of the city.
A new moon slowly emerged from the dark clouds, revealing the dilapidated appearance of the ancient mansion hidden in the night.
Under layers of creeping ivy and vines, the wall paint had long since peeled off; the courtyard behind the iron gate was covered in withered leaves and was in disarray; the neglected fountain pool had long dried up, and the griffin stone sculptures on both sides had broken wings and missing claws.
The entire building exuded a strange and chilling aura.
This was the Amber House, a mansion located in the distant suburbs of Hua City, once belonging to a wealthy merchant. After the merchant committed suicide due to business failure, it remained vacant, and gradually rumors of hauntings spread. Over time, it became completely abandoned.
By now, almost no one knew that people still lived in this mansion.
It now belonged to a young woman named Jiang Li.
Deep within the mansion, in a spacious room, Jiang Li slept soundly on a rose-colored bed.
Her long eyelashes trembled slightly, a few beads of sweat appeared on her forehead, and from time to time, she uttered soft, bone-melting sleep talks, evidently sleeping very restlessly.
“Tap, tap, tap—!”
The faint sound of high heels tapping on the marble floor echoed in the corridor. The brass doorknob gently turned, and the dark solid wood door was opened.
The Little Maid, dressed in a classical maid uniform, entered the room and approached Jiang Li's bed, bowing respectfully.
The Little Maid did not speak, but Jiang Li seemed to sense something, suddenly waking up. The moment she opened her eyes, a restless crimson light flashed in them.
The crimson light only lasted for a brief moment, then slowly receded like a tide, and her eyes returned to their vibrant sea-blue color.
At this point, the Little Maid finally spoke, “Miss, C-level energy alert.”
Jiang Li composed herself and said faintly, “Does a C-level energy alert also require me to go?”
The Little Maid did not speak, only gently shook her head, indicating she was unsure.
“Where?”
“Chang Sheng Road direction.”
“Sigh, help me change, please.” Jiang Li sighed softly and sat up.
The rose-colored down comforter slid from her body, and her long silver hair cascaded down like a waterfall, concealing her snow-white, jade-like body. Her slender yet shapely curves were faintly visible.
“Yes.” The Little Maid responded, then helped the slender and delicate young woman up and sat her down on the chair in front of the dressing table.
Under the light, Jiang Li’s reflection could be seen in the mirror: long silver hair, an exquisite oval face, and a delicate, slender body that evoked pity.
It was a pity, however, that this exquisite young woman, like a doll, was not so perfect.
From her knee downwards, her slender right leg was entirely made of a metal prosthesis. Strange runes were engraved on the silver casing of the prosthesis, glowing with a faint blue light.
While helping Jiang Li comb her long hair, the Little Maid quietly asked, “Miss, which one do you want to wear today?”
“Just wear the set I bought a few days ago. Also, please bring my cane. I’ll leave directly after changing; I won’t eat anything.”
“Okay, Miss.”
...
Twenty minutes later, Hua City, Chang Sheng Road.
Several police cars were parked next to the old apartment building. A cordon was set up in front of the building's entrance, and red and blue police lights flashed continuously.
Four people in police uniforms were carrying a stretcher out. The stretcher was covered with a white cloth, and from the undulating outline beneath, it was clear that there was a female body under the cloth.
Not long after, a black sedan slowly drove up and parked by the road. Seeing the car arrive, the person in charge of the scene immediately went to meet it.
The car window slowly rolled down, revealing the young woman's slightly pale profile. She frowned slightly and asked the approaching person indifferently, “What happened?”
Inside the dimly lit car, the young woman's chest faintly displayed a silver badge shaped like an owl.
The Omen Owl, that was the unique badge of the Night Watch.
The Night Watch was a semi-official organization composed of Psychic with special abilities, specifically responsible for handling various matters related to Weird tale.
Outside the car window, the person in charge of the scene glanced at the badge on Jiang Li's chest and smiled helplessly, “It's a Weird tale attack. We can't handle this.”
“According to regulations, after confirmation, we must notify your Night Watch immediately.”
“But I’m not the officer on duty tonight.” Jiang Li said, her tone a bit weary.
“I know it's Old Bai. We've notified him. He's already here, he's upstairs. He's the one who asked us to notify you.”
As if it had nothing to do with her, Jiang Li asked indifferently, “Are there any witnesses?”
“No.”
“I understand.” Jiang Li nodded thoughtfully.
Attack incidents without witnesses are much easier to handle, saving a lot of effort needed to curb the spread of rumors.
Thinking this, Jiang Li turned and gently patted the back of the driver's seat, “A Hua, I'm going up to take a look.”
“Okay, Miss!”
The Little Maid driving the car obediently responded and quickly got out to open the door for Jiang Li, simultaneously handing her the black cane adorned with a silver unicorn at its top.
Jiang Li took the cane and got out of the car, instructing the Little Maid, “You don't need to come up with me; wait for me down here for a while.” Then she walked alone towards the apartment building.
Her delicate and slender body wore a fitted suit Coat, with a white shirt underneath. Beneath the black double-breasted high-waisted long skirt, rhombus-patterned black stockings well concealed the defect of her leg, but they could not hide the difficulty of her steps as she walked.
Although it was not their first time working together, seeing Jiang Li's limping figure as she left, the person in charge of the scene couldn't help but feel a sense of pity.
He sighed softly and muttered to himself, “She’s a really nice girl, apart from her somewhat eccentric personality, it’s just a shame...”

“Hmph!” Before the person in charge finished speaking, he heard a cold snort from beside him. He looked over to see the Little Maid with wide Eyeballs, glaring at him indignantly, and fiercely said, “Our Miss doesn't need your pity!”
The person in charge froze for a moment, then scratched the back of his head with an embarrassed smile, “Ha, haha, this really is...”
...
Chang Sheng Road was in a remote area, neither near a business district nor a school district. Few people lived there; almost all were young people who had just started working and were attracted by the cheap rent.
The apartment building had very few residents to begin with. After a simple evacuation, the entire building became empty. Jiang Li walked through the quiet corridor, only hearing the faint sound of her high heels tapping on the ground.
The crime scene was not large; it was a simply decorated one-bedroom rental unit.
As soon as she entered, Jiang Li smelled a strong scent of blood assaulting her senses.
A man had already arrived in the room.
He was a very handsome man, with a face that combined both softness and masculinity, fair skin, a long neck, and eyes like cold stars on a winter night.
He wore a dark brown classical suit with a silver owl badge on his chest. His lapels were slightly open, revealing a white shirt collar embroidered with a crimson rose. His whole demeanor exuded a poetic romance, a playboy's flamboyance, and a hint of a swordsman's sharpness.
It was this 'flamboyant, charming, and sharp' man who, when Jiang Li arrived, was unreservedly squatting by the bedroom door, eating instant noodles.
The hand holding the fork had a slightly upturned pinky finger, and he was shoveling large mouthfuls of instant noodles into his mouth, eating with great relish, soup splashing everywhere.
As if he didn't care that just minutes ago, a horribly disfigured body, almost completely drained of blood, lay in the next room.
Hearing footsteps at the door, the man put down his instant noodles, grabbed a yellow and black advertisement flyer nearby to wipe his mouth, and looked up, giving Jiang Li a warm smile.
“Ha! You're finally here. I was starving, so I ate something first. I hope you don't mind?”
Jiang Li's eyes openly showed her disgust; she didn't bother with the man's flippant question.
“Bai Kai, it's not my duty tonight. You called me here, so you must have a purpose. Tell me, what did you find?”
“Tsk, being called by my full name by a junior, I really do feel offended, oh! You could at least call me senior, right?” Bai Kai spread his hands with a wronged expression, “Besides, I, your senior, called you over because I was thinking of you!”
“For me?” Jiang Li frowned.
“Of course, hasn't the pursuit of Twilight * * always been your responsibility?”
“Is this attack incident related to Twilight * *?”
“That's right.” Bai Kai sat up straight and took a tuft of pale fur from his jacket pocket, “Look, rabbit fur!”
Jiang Li looked at the pale fur in Bai Kai's hand, nodded thoughtfully, and said, “Is it that rabbit again?”
Twilight * * is a Witch Seed Weird tale circulating in Hua City.
Legend has it that she is a young woman wearing a luxurious long dress, as if from a fairy tale, who appears at dusk, strolling through the city with a parasol.
She would let out a series of discordant screams at those drawn to her beauty and approaching her. Those who heard her voice would go mad, lose control of their souls, and become her servants.
Six months ago, Jiang Li personally killed Twilight * *, but recently she seemed to have returned.
Weird tale often cannot be eradicated in one go; as long as people still believe in their existence, they have the possibility of reappearing.
The Night Watch officers can only kill them repeatedly, preventing them from causing destruction until they are completely forgotten by people.
And Mr. Rabbit is the only remaining servant created by Twilight * *. Recently, he has consecutively committed three murders. All the victims were people with the potential to become Psychic.
These people are easy to screen from ordinary people, because if Weird tale intentionally conceal their existence, only Psychic or those with the potential to become Psychic can see them.
Blood containing spiritual energy is like a drug to those Weird tale, with an extremely strong allure, and can nourish their power growth more than ordinary human blood.
“If you see it, you'll be eaten!”
This phrase, often told to newcomers in the Night Watch, is by no means just a joke.
It was precisely because of Mr. Rabbit's frequent activities that Jiang Li concluded that Twilight * * was about to awaken. She needed blood containing spiritual energy as a sacrifice to restore her power!
Bai Kai pouted and said, “That's right, I know you've already killed that rabbit, but as long as there are fools who believe nonsense like 'rabbits are symbols of evil in the Middle Ages,' it will come back, won't it?”
“I know everything you're saying. I'll also see the file on tonight's murder later. I assume you called me over for more than just to ★ 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 ★ say all this?” Jiang Li said coldly.
“I called you over because I suspect Twilight * * hasn't awakened, and the recent attacks have nothing to do with her.” Bai Kai explained seriously. “It's that rabbit; it's accumulating power, trying to break free from its master's control and become a new Witch Seed.”
Jiang Li frowned, “Do you have proof?”
“Yes!” Bai Kai held up one finger and said, “First, for some reason, it woke up before its master, which is very abnormal.”
As he spoke, Bai Kai held up a second finger, “Second, judging from the spiritual energy residue at the scene, it has basically advanced from C-level to B-level.”
“In other words, if it's not stopped quickly, a new Witch Seed will be born in Hua City. I'm actually a little curious what kind of Weird tale it will become if it successfully advances! A bloody butcher Rabbit Girl?”
Upon hearing this, Jiang Li's expression became solemn. Every Witch Seed Weird tale, once fully formed, has a minimum energy reaction close to A-level, and the potential destruction they can cause is unimaginable.
The Twilight * * that Jiang Li once dealt with only had a B-level energy reaction, close to A-level, yet it caused a tragic incident that killed hundreds of people.
Therefore, preventing the birth of a Witch Seed means saving at least dozens to hundreds of lives!
After a moment of contemplation, Jiang Li nodded slightly, “Hmm, I understand. I will keep an eye on it.” With that, she turned and walked away, limping.
Watching Jiang Li's retreating figure, Bai Kai rolled his Eyeball and muttered softly, “A kind reminder, and not even a thank you. How cold!”
“If my child ever gets married, they absolutely cannot marry someone like that. What's the use of being pretty? Who isn't good-looking these days? Personality is the most important thing!”
“Heh, do you have a wife?” Jiang Li's voice drifted faintly from the corridor.
Bai Kai's expression gradually stiffened, his mindset changed, and he fell into thought.
He realized that he had no children, no wife, and even his only friend had died. His life was desolate...
