"Don’t. You’re not a child. Who you meet and who you’re seen with could easily stir up trouble."

He already had a history of colluding with the enemy. If someone saw him meeting with people from Xi Yan now, they’d surely use it to level another accusation against the Qian family.

Qian Fanji’s heart leaped with joy when he heard this, and his gaze on her was filled with warmth.

"After all, you’re both living in the General’s manor. If someone followed the trail and dug something up, the loss would far outweigh the gain," Ye Qianning added before he could even savor the feeling.

Qian Fanji seemed to pay no mind to her follow-up remark. He took a silver note from his sleeve, his voice gentle. "Remember to bring back a jug of Immortal’s Drunk when you return."

...

’I have to admit, Xi Fengying’s methods for secrecy are truly top-notch.’

’Putting so much effort into a silver note... it’s like we’re in a spy war. I can already picture Qian Fanji making contact with Xi Yan.’

A servant hitched the horse to the carriage and brought it to the entrance.

Luo Wen took the step stool from the carriage, and Ye Qianning used it to hop aboard.

"To Nianyunjian."

"Yes, Young Miss."

Luo Wen took the reins, and the carriage slowly began to move.

The Capital City had only been open for a day, so the streets were deserted. There wasn’t a single street vendor in sight, and most of the shops remained closed. Only a few small stores were scattered here and there with their doors open.

Few shops, like those selling buns or pastries, were open, and they didn’t seem to be operating.

Ye Qianning kept the carriage window open the entire way. Her small frame was leaning against the window, and whenever they passed an open shop, she would stick half her body out, craning her neck to look inside.

There were few carriages on the street as well. The once-bustling areas now looked desolate at a glance.

Leaning against the window, her eyes darted left and right.

"Stop the carriage! Stop!" Ye Qianning suddenly shouted in excitement.

Luo Wen reined in the horses. "Young Miss, what is it?"

"Buns! They’re selling buns! Quick, go buy a few." Her eyes lit up as if she had seen something incredible.

"Yes, Young Miss."

Luo Wen got out of the carriage.

Ye Qianning stuck her head out, staring at the little bun shop with a face full of anticipation.

Luo Wen bought four buns and carried them back to the carriage in a sheet of oil paper.

Ye Qianning took them and eagerly took a bite. After a few chews, she frowned slightly, her little face fell, and she grumbled, "The pastries from Nianyunjian are still better. Let’s go. To Nianyunjian."

Luo Wen acknowledged her and hopped back onto the carriage.

The carriage started moving again, and it wasn’t long before they arrived at Nianyunjian. However, just like the other shops, it wasn’t open.

Ye Qianning stood at the entrance, her little face crestfallen.

The distant sound of marching footsteps reached her ears. She lowered her gaze, a flicker of movement in her eyes.

The sound of marching grew closer. A squad of soldiers appeared on the street, and the one in the lead was a familiar face.

A moment later, when Ye Qianning looked up, the squad was walking right toward her.

"Mr. Li!" she called out loudly.

Mr. Li had noticed the little girl from a distance. He walked up to her and stopped. "Miss Xiang, what are you doing here?"

"I heard the servants say the Capital City’s lockdown was lifted, so I wanted to come out for a walk and buy some pastries from Nianyunjian. But who knew? There’s barely anyone on the streets, and none of the food shops are open. Only one bun shop on the main street was open, but the buns I bought weren’t even good."

"The lockdown was just lifted this morning, so many people don’t know yet. Most shops should start opening up tomorrow," Mr. Li said with a smile.

Ye Qianning pouted, her face full of disappointment. "I was really hoping to eat something good, but not a single place is open."

"It seems the only place in the entire Capital City that didn’t close is Immortal’s Drunk. If you’re looking for something to eat, you could try checking there," Mr. Li suggested.
