I Built a Safe Zone in the Dead World
Chapter 14: Shift in power
The corpse of the evolved infected lay in the center of the base, its unnaturally lean body twisted at an angle that didn’t feel entirely lifeless, as if even in death it resisted being reduced to something simple. The air around it felt different compared to the Brute they had killed earlier. Heavier. Sharper. Arata Kurozawa stood over it for a moment, his eyes scanning every detail, not out of curiosity, but necessity. This wasn’t just another enemy. It was proof. Proof that the world outside wasn’t stabilizing—it was accelerating.
Reina broke the silence first. "We can’t treat them like normal infected anymore." Her voice was steady, but there was a clear shift in it. This wasn’t caution. It was recognition. Yuna crouched near the body, tapping it lightly with her bat before pulling back. "Fast, smart, and patient," she muttered. "I hate enemies like that." Miyu stepped closer, her gaze fixed on the creature’s face. "It watched us before coming in," she said quietly. "It already knew how we fought." Airi swallowed slightly at that, her hands tightening unconsciously. "So next time..." she started, but didn’t finish.
Arata finished it for her. "Next time, they’ll be better."
That settled it.
Not fear.
Not panic.
Just reality.
He turned away from the body and looked at the group. "We adapt faster," he said. "Or we die." No one argued. Not anymore. The earlier hesitation that existed when they first met him was gone. What remained was something more solid. Trust—not emotional, but proven.
A faint glow appeared in Arata’s vision again.
[SYSTEM NOTICE][HIGH-TIER TARGET ELIMINATED][BONUS REWARD AVAILABLE][SKILL EVOLUTION CONDITION MET]
His eyes narrowed slightly. This was new.
He stepped aside, focusing inward.
"Open."
[SKILL EVOLUTION AVAILABLE]
Burst Step → Shadow Step (Enhanced mobility, unpredictable movement pattern) 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
Basic Combat Instinct → Advanced Combat Instinct (Improved reaction, pattern prediction)
Arata didn’t hesitate.
"Evolve both."
[CONFIRMED][SKILL UPGRADE COMPLETE]
The shift was immediate, but not overwhelming. It was cleaner. Sharper. His body felt lighter, but more controlled. His awareness expanded—not in range, but in clarity. Movements felt slower around him, not because they actually were, but because he could process them faster.
Reina noticed the change instantly. "...You got stronger again," she said. It wasn’t a question. Arata nodded once. "Yes." Yuna grinned. "Good. Because I don’t like the idea of those things getting stronger alone."
Miyu studied him carefully. "...That system," she said. "It’s evolving you." Arata replied calmly, "It rewards efficiency." She nodded slightly, as if confirming something in her mind.
The base didn’t relax after the fight. If anything, it became more active. The body was moved away from the central area, not out of fear, but practicality. Airi and Hana avoided looking at it directly, but they didn’t stop working. Supplies were checked again. Barricades reinforced further. Every small task carried more urgency now.
Because the rules had changed.
Reina approached Arata again. "We need to rethink defense," she said. "If more of those appear, static positions won’t be enough." Arata agreed immediately. "We shift to dynamic response." Yuna tilted her head. "Meaning?" "We don’t wait for them to come in," Arata replied. "We control where the fight happens."
Miyu added quietly, "Limit their ability to observe."
Arata looked at her briefly.
Then nodded.
"Exactly."
The strategy began to take shape. Entry points would no longer be passive. They would be controlled engagement zones. Light manipulation, noise control, forced movement paths. The base wasn’t just a shelter anymore. It was becoming a system.
Time passed, but no one truly rested.
Then—A sudden noise came from outside.
Not slow, Not controlled, Chaotic.
Multiple footsteps.
Running.
Airi froze. "That’s...different." Reina moved instantly to the entrance. "Group movement," she said. Yuna’s expression sharpened. "And fast."
Arata stepped forward, his senses locking in.
This wasn’t like before, This wasn’t calculated, This was panic.
The voices came next.
"Help! Open—please!"
A male voice, desperate.
Another scream followed, cut short by something heavy.
Reina glanced at Arata. "Trap?" she asked.
"Maybe," he replied.
Yuna smirked slightly. "Or something worse."
The footsteps got closer.
Then—A figure appeared outside the barricade.
Covered in blood, Breathing wildly, Eyes wide with terror.
"Please—open!" he shouted.
Behind him—Movement, Fast, Low, Multiple.
Not one, Not two, A group, Evolved infected.
Hunting.
Airi gasped. "There’s more of them!"
Reina raised her gun. "Decision now."
Everything slowed.
Not in reality, but In Arata’s mind.
Variables.
Risk.
Reward.
Time.
Then—He spoke, "Open the gap."
Everyone froze for half a second.
"...Are you serious?" she asked.
"Yes," Arata replied.
Yuna’s smile returned, Sharp and excited.
"Now this...this is going to be fun."
The man outside slammed against the barricade again. "Please!"
Arata’s voice was calm.
"Open it."
Because this wasn’t just a rescue, This was a test, A real one.
And this time—They wouldn’t just survive, They would dominate.
The barricade shifted.
The gap opened, The man stumbled inside, And right behind him—The hunters came.
