The hallway smelled of blood.

Arata Kurozawa stood still, his grip tightening around the metal pipe as echoes of distant screams faded into something far worse—silence. Not the peaceful kind, but the kind that waited. Watched.

Listened.

His breathing was uneven, but his eyes were no longer the same.

They were sharper, Colder, Focused.

> [MAIN QUEST: SURVIVE 24 HOURS]

Reward: UNKNOWN

The message still floated faintly in his vision.

"Twenty-four hours..." he muttered under his breath. "So this isn’t just survival... it’s a test."

A system.

Something inside him had awakened—but it wasn’t random.

It had rules, And rules meant structure.

Structure meant control.

A low growl echoed from deeper in the hallway.

Arata’s body reacted instantly.

He stepped back, raising the pipe.

Something was coming.

But this time... it felt different, Heavier, More dangerous.

The footsteps weren’t chaotic like the others.

They were slow, Deliberate.

Each step carried weight.

Then it appeared, A figure emerged from the shadows, Taller than the others.

Its body was distorted—muscles swollen unnaturally, veins bulging across gray skin. One arm dragged along the ground, elongated and twisted, fingers sharp like claws. Its jaw hung slightly open, revealing broken teeth stained with fresh blood.

But the most terrifying part— is Its eyes.

They weren’t empty , They were focused.

Locked directly onto Arata.

> [WARNING: HIGH-RISK TARGET DETECTED]

> [INFECTED TYPE: EVOLVED – HUNTER]

> [THREAT LEVEL: ABOVE HOST CAPABILITY]

Arata’s heartbeat spiked.

"Above... my capability?" he whispered.

For the first time since the system awakened...

Fear returned.

The Hunter moved.

Not fast , But controlled.

Like a predator testing its prey.

Then—It vanished.

Arata’s instincts screamed.

He ducked instantly—WHOOSH!

Claws sliced through the air where his head had been.

Too fast , Way too fast.

His body rolled to the side, barely avoiding the next strike. The floor cracked where the Hunter’s arm slammed down.

"This thing... it’s not like the others," Arata thought, breathing heavily.

He couldn’t win by panic, He needed to think.

> [SYSTEM NOTICE]

> [Basic Combat Instinct Active]

> [Analyzing Enemy Pattern...]

His vision sharpened further.

The Hunter’s movements—though fast—had rhythm.

Attack, Pause, Adjust.

Not random.

Predictable... if he survived long enough to read it.

The Hunter lunged again.

Arata didn’t dodge this time, He stepped forward.

At the last second—He twisted his body.

The claws missed by inches.

And he struck.

CRACK!

The pipe slammed into the side of the Hunter’s head.

It didn’t fall, But it staggered, That was enough.

"Not invincible..." Arata said under his breath.

"Just stronger."

The Hunter roared—an inhuman, broken sound—and charged again, faster this time.

Too fast.

Arata couldn’t fully dodge—SLASH!

Pain exploded across his side as claws tore through his shirt, grazing his flesh.

He was thrown backward, crashing into the wall.

His grip loosened, The pipe fell.

Blood dripped down his side.

His vision blurred slightly.

"Damn it... I can’t keep up..." he thought.

The Hunter approached slowly now.

Confident, Certain.

Like it knew the fight was over.

Then—A gunshot echoed through the hallway.

BANG!

The Hunter’s head snapped slightly to the side.

Not damage, But interruption.

Arata’s eyes widened.

Someone else was here.

Another shot.

BANG!

This time, the Hunter turned fully.

Its attention shifted.

Away from Arata.

At the far end of the hallway stood a girl.

Long dark hair tied back.

Steady hands holding a pistol.

Eyes cold, Focused and Unshaken.

"Move if you want to live," she said calmly.

Arata didn’t hesitate.

He rolled to the side, grabbing the fallen pipe.

The Hunter lunged toward the girl—

But this time—Arata moved first.

He charged from the side.

Every instinct screaming.

Every muscle responding.

"Now!"

The girl fired again.

BANG!

The Hunter’s movement staggered—

And Arata struck with everything he had.

CRACK!

The pipe crushed into the side of its skull.

A sickening sound followed.

The Hunter collapsed.

This time—It didn’t move.

Silence, Heavy and real.

> [ENEMY ELIMINATED]

> [BONUS TARGET DEFEATED: EVOLVED HUNTER]

> [REWARD CALCULATING...]

Arata dropped to one knee, breathing heavily.

He was alive.

Again.

> [LEVEL UP]

> [HOST LEVEL: 2]

> [STATS UNLOCKED]

> [SYSTEM FUNCTION: STATUS WINDOW ACTIVATED]

A translucent screen appeared before him.

Strength, Speed, Endurance.

All measurable, All improvable.

"So this is how it works..." Arata whispered.

"Kill... survive... evolve."

He slowly looked up.

The girl was still standing there.

Gun lowered slightly—but not completely.

Still cautious, Still ready.

"Who are you?" she asked.

Arata picked up the pipe again, standing despite the pain.

"...Arata Kurozawa."

The girl studied him for a moment, Then spoke.

"Minase Reina."

Her eyes shifted briefly toward the dead Hunter.

Then back to him.

"You shouldn’t be alive," she said bluntly.

Arata gave a faint, tired smirk.

"Yeah... I’m starting to think the same."

Outside the building, distant explosions echoed.

The world wasn’t just collapsing.

It was evolving.

And inside that broken world—Two survivors had just crossed paths.

Not by chance, But by necessity.

> [NEW CONDITION MET]

> [SURVIVOR LINK ESTABLISHED]

> [BONUS EFFECT: +5% SURVIVAL EFFICIENCY]

Arata’s eyes narrowed slightly.

"A system... that rewards connections too? 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Things were getting more complicated.

And far more dangerous.
