I Built a Safe Zone in the Dead World
Chapter 7: Foundation Of Power
The corpse of the Brute lay in the center of the shopping complex, its massive body twisted unnaturally, thick blood slowly spreading across the cracked tiles. The silence that followed its fall felt heavier than the fight itself. No one moved for a few seconds. Not because they were frozen—but because they were processing what had just happened.Arata Kurozawa stood over it,his breathing controlled, his grip still tight around the metal pipe.He wasn’t looking at the body.He was looking at the space around it.
Evaluating, Claiming, Understanding.
> [ENEMY ELIMINATED]
[BRUTE VARIANT DEFEATED]

[HOST LEVEL: 3]
[STAT POINTS AVAILABLE: 7]
[NEW SKILL AVAILABLE]
Arata’s eyes sharpened slightly at the last line.A new skill. This was where the real growth began. But he didn’t open it immediately. Not yet.First came control.
Reina lowered her pistol slowly, her eyes still scanning the upper floors and surrounding corridors. She didn’t relax. Not completely.Yuna rested her bat on her shoulder again, but her gaze moved across the space with clear interest, measuring entrances, angles, blind spots.Airi stood a few steps behind, her eyes fixed on the fallen Brute, shock still lingering but slowly turning into realization.
"We actually killed that..." she whispered.
"Correction,"Yuna said lightly,"we survived killing it."
Arata finally spoke."Check the perimeter.No noise,no assumptions.Clear every corner."
Reina moved instantly toward the left corridor.Yuna signaled her remaining two men to follow the right.Airi hesitated for a second before moving toward Arata.
"...What should I do?" she asked.
Arata looked at her briefly."Stay close.Watch everything.Learn."
She nodded seriously. This time, there was no hesitation.
---
The next ten minutes were quiet but tense.Every shop was checked.Every shadow observed. The upper level was cleared last.Reina took the lead there, her movements precise and silent. She returned shortly after.
"Clear,"she said.
Yuna followed from the opposite side."Same here.No movement."
Arata nodded once.That was enough.
"This place is secured,"he said.
The words carried weight.Not hope.Not assumption.Decision.
Airi looked around slowly,as if trying to understand what "secured" even meant in a world like this."So...this is our base now?"
Arata turned toward the broken entrance, then toward the upper level, then finally back at the group."Temporary,"he said."But yes. This is where we start."
Reina crossed her arms slightly."Then we fortify immediately.Front entrance is too exposed."
"Agreed,"Arata replied."We close the main entrance, redirect entry through the side and back only.Control movement."
Yuna smirked."You’ve done this before?"
"No,"Arata said calmly."I just understand survival."
They moved without wasting time.Furniture from nearby stores was dragged and stacked.Broken shelves, metal racks, and debris were used to reinforce weak points. The front entrance was blocked heavily, leaving only narrow observation gaps. The side entrance was converted into the primary access point—easier to defend, harder to notice from outside. The back storage exit was cleared but kept hidden, used as an emergency route.
Airi assisted where she could, organizing supplies, checking usable medical items, cleaning a small section that would act as a treatment area. Her hands moved faster now.Not confident—but adapting.
Yuna worked differently. She wasn’t as precise as Reina, but she understood positioning. She adjusted barricades for better movement during fights, ensuring they wouldn’t trap themselves. She also kept an eye on her own group, though her expression suggested she didn’t fully trust them.
Arata oversaw everything. He didn’t do the most work physically—but every decision passed through him.Every adjustment.Every placement. He wasn’t just building a shelter.
He was building control.
An hour passed, Then two.
By the time the sun reached higher, the shopping complex no longer looked abandoned. It looked occupied.Defended.
Alive.
Arata finally stepped back, observing the entire layout. The entrance choke points. The fallback routes. The supply placement. The elevated positions.
Good, Not perfect, But strong enough.
> [SYSTEM NOTICE]
[BASE ESTABLISHMENT DETECTED]
[ZONE STATUS: CONTROLLED AREA (LOW LEVEL)]
[BONUS: STAMINA RECOVERY +15% INSIDE ZONE]
Airi blinked again, unable to ignore it this time."You saw that too, right?" she asked carefully.
Reina didn’t answer , Yuna tilted her head slightly."Interesting..."Arata looked at them.
Then spoke, "Yes.It’s real."
Silence.
"You’re going to explain?"Yuna asked ?
"Later,"Arata replied."Right now,we stabilize."
She didn’t push further, But her interest deepened.
Arata moved to a central position inside the complex. He finally opened the system fully.

[STATS UPDATED]
Power surged again—but this time it felt...stable.Not explosive.Not overwhelming.Controlled.
Good, That meant growth.
"Show skill."
> [SKILL UNLOCK AVAILABLE]
1: Burst Step (Active) – Short distance acceleration with increased speed.
2: Iron Body (Passive) – Reduces incoming damage slightly.
Arata’s eyes paused on both.Speed or defense, Survival or endurance.
He chose instantly.
"Burst Step."
> [SKILL ACQUIRED: BURST STEP]
The moment it activated,he understood it.Not through explanation—but instinct. It was sharp, Fast and Decisive.
"Stronger?"Reina asked from behind him.
"Yes,"he replied simply.
Yuna stepped closer now,her curiosity no longer hidden."Alright...I think it’s time you explain. What exactly is going on with you?"
Airi looked at him too, Arata didn’t avoid their gaze.
"There’s a system,"he said."It rewards survival.Killing.Efficiency.It tracks everything."
Silence filled the space.
Yuna raised an eyebrow."That’s...insane."
Reina didn’t react outwardly. But she didn’t deny it either.
"...And it chose you?"she asked.
Arata shook his head slightly."No.It responds to conditions. Not people."
Airi whispered,"Then...can we get it too?" 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
Arata didn’t answer immediately.
Because the truth was—He didn’t know.
Before he could respond—A noise came from the entrance.
All heads turned instantly, Reina raised her gun, Yuna lifted her bat , Arata stepped forward.
Voices, More humans.
Different this time, More organized.
"...Looks like we’re not the only ones building a base,"Yuna muttered.
Arata’s eyes hardened.
Because this time—It wouldn’t be negotiation.
It would be control.
