I Built a Safe Zone in the Dead World
Chapter 81: City Beneath The Dead
Explosions illuminated the skyline beneath the storm while military forces fought desperately against the endless infected horde surrounding them from every direction. Smoke covered entire roads while burning vehicles turned the flooded streets orange beneath the darkness.
And in the middle of everything— The Devourer roared toward the sky again.
Thousands of infected responded instantly.
Like slaves obeying a king, The battlefield collapsed into total chaos afterward.
Military barricades broke apart while infected flooded through shattered streets endlessly. Soldiers screamed while firing desperately into the horde. Enhanced humans from Black Flag attacked simultaneously from the shadows while explosions shook nearby buildings apart.
Humanity wasn’t fighting zombies anymore.
Everything had become war.
Yuna fired continuously from behind overturned concrete while breathing heavily. "WHY DOES EVERY SINGLE DAY GET WORSE?!"
Kaede calmly shot three infected through the head consecutively beside her. "...Because we survived another day."
"That sounded motivational and depressing at the same time."
Nearby, Reina spun both combat blades violently through infected bodies while laughing like a complete maniac. Blood mixed with rainwater around her boots while corpses collapsed across the flooded road.
Honestly— Even the military soldiers nearby looked scared of her now.
Meanwhile Elena shouted orders through combat radio while leading defensive formations against the infected tide. "Left side formation hold the barricade! Heavy units advance forward now!"
But even organized military lines slowly started collapsing.
There were too many infected.
Far too many, And behind the entire horde—
The Devourer continued staring only at Arata.
Its glowing red eyes never left him.
"...Host..."
That distorted voice echoed again across the battlefield, Arata’s expression darkened immediately.
The black energy surrounding his body flickered violently while the system warnings continued flashing before his eyes.
[Synchronization Rate: 74%]
[Devourer Resonance Increasing]
[Warning: Host Emotional Instability Rising]
Akari immediately noticed his breathing becoming uneven again.
Then without hesitation—She grabbed his hand, Warmth spread through him instantly.
The black energy stabilized slightly again.
Lucien silently observed that interaction from the rooftop above while rain dripped from his white hair.
His expression slowly darkened.
"...So that’s the key."
One Black Flag soldier stepped beside him nervously afterward. "Commander Lucien... should we eliminate the girl?"
Silence.
Lucien’s golden eyes shifted downward toward Akari.
Then slowly— He smiled.
"No." His voice softened slightly afterward. "Not yet."
Back on the battlefield, the Devourer suddenly charged forward again.
BOOOOOOOOM!!
The streets shattered beneath its massive body while infected followed behind it like a living tsunami.
Elena instantly shouted toward everyone nearby. "Fall back!"
But Arata moved first.
Black energy exploded around him violently as he sprinted directly toward the giant mutation again.
CRAAAAAASH!!
The collision shook nearby buildings while shockwaves blasted rainwater through the air. Arata blocked one massive claw before spinning violently and driving his blade directly into the Devourer’s shoulder.
The creature roared furiously, Then grabbed him instantly, Everyone froze.
The Devourer lifted Arata high into the air before smashing him through an entire building.
BOOOOOOOOM!!
Concrete exploded everywhere.
"ARATA!" Akari screamed immediately.
The creature charged toward the collapsed building afterward.
Too fast, Too dangerous, But before it reached him— Several missiles suddenly descended from the storm clouds above.
BOOOOOOOOM!! BOOOOOOOOM!! BOOOOOOOOM!!
Direct hits.
The Devourer roared violently as explosions engulfed its massive body completely.
Everyone looked upward instantly, Another aircraft appeared above the battlefield.
Smaller than the military one, Completely black, No insignia, No lights, Just silence.
Then suddenly—Figures descended rapidly from the aircraft using cables. Not soldiers, Something else.
They wore long dark coats mixed with combat armor while strange silver symbols covered their uniforms. Every movement felt unnaturally calm. Almost emotionless.
Even Lucien’s smile disappeared briefly afterward.
"...Impossible."
Elena’s expression immediately darkened too. "...Why are THEY here?"
Yuna blinked slowly. "...Okay can somebody explain literally anything anymore?"
One of the newcomers landed directly in the center of the battlefield afterward, A man, Tall.
Black gloves, Long silver hair, Cold gray eyes, Around Arata’s age, But the terrifying part—Black markings covered half his neck too.Exactly like Arata.
Silence spread instantly.
Even the Devourer stopped moving briefly while staring at the newcomer.
The silver-haired man slowly looked toward Arata emerging from the destroyed building afterward.
Then calmly spoke.
"...So you’re the original host."
Arata froze slightly.
Because the pressure coming from this man felt familiar.
Too familiar.
Like looking at another version of himself.
The system exploded violently before his vision.
[WARNING] 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
[Compatible Host Detected]
[synchronization Reaction Activated]
Pain shot through Arata’s body instantly afterward while black energy surged uncontrollably around him.
Akari immediately grabbed his arm. "Arata!"
The silver-haired man quietly watched him.
Then slightly smiled.
"...Interesting."
Lucien suddenly stepped forward aggressively from the rooftop afterward.
"...Why is Eden involved now?"
The battlefield became silent again, Eden.
Even Elena’s military soldiers visibly became nervous hearing that name.
Yuna immediately noticed. "...Why does everyone look scared?"
Elena answered quietly without looking away from the newcomers.
"Because Eden isn’t human anymore."
Silence.
Then the silver-haired man calmly introduced himself.
"...My name is Ren."
His gray eyes locked directly onto Arata afterward.
"And I came to take you underground."
Thunder exploded across the city sky.
Rain poured heavily around the battlefield.
Nobody moved.
Then Yuna finally pointed dramatically toward Ren.
"NO." She looked emotionally exhausted already. "Absolutely not. Nobody is going underground with creepy anime villains anymore."
Ren slowly blinked once.
"...Anime?"
"...Never mind."
The Devourer suddenly roared violently again afterward before charging toward Ren this time.
But Ren didn’t move, Not even slightly.
Then—Black energy exploded around him instantly, Exactly like Arata’s.
BOOOOOOOOM!!
The Devourer’s massive body stopped mid-charge as invisible force crushed the street beneath it violently.
Everyone froze, The creature couldn’t move, At all.
Ren calmly walked toward the restrained mutation afterward while rain fell softly around him.
Then quietly—He placed one hand on the Devourer’s head.
"...Sleep."
CRACK.
The Devourer’s entire body collapsed instantly afterward, Dead, Complete silence spread across the battlefield.
Even Arata stared blankly.
Because the monster that nearly destroyed everyone— Died in one touch.
Yuna’s soul visibly ascended. "...Nope."
Reina slowly grinned afterward. "...Now this is getting interesting."
Lucien’s expression had completely darkened now.
For the first time—He looked genuinely cautious.Ren slowly turned back toward Arata afterward, Then calmly spoke.
"You are wasting your evolution here."
Akari immediately stepped protectively beside Arata afterward. "...He’s not going anywhere with strangers."
Ren’s emotionless eyes shifted toward her briefly.
Then toward their joined hands, Silence followed briefly afterward.
"...So the emotional anchor theory was true."
Akari frowned instantly. "...Can everyone stop talking about me like I’m a science project?"
Unexpectedly— A very small smile appeared on Ren’s face.
"...Fair point."
Yuna blinked slowly afterward. "...Okay why is the scary guy suddenly normal?"
Meanwhile Lucien quietly stepped backward through the rain.
Because something had changed now.
The battlefield no longer belonged to him.
Ren’s gray eyes slowly shifted toward Lucien afterward.
Then calmly spoke one sentence.
"You were never supposed to awaken the original host."
Silence.
Lucien smiled faintly afterward despite the tension, "...And yet I did."
Ren’s expression became colder instantly.
Then the atmosphere exploded.Black energy erupted across the battlefield from both of them simultaneously while thunder shook the entire city, Even the air felt heavy now, Two monsters, Two evolved hosts, And somehow—Both feared Arata becoming something greater than them.
