Chapter 24: Chapter 24

The morning after Gerald knocked over three potted plants and terrorized a first-year, Halcyon Academy was buzzing.

Not the usual buzz — the comfortable kind that came with gossip and duel results and enchanted breakfast food with opinions. This was different. Tighter. The kind of energy that gathered in hallways when something had happened that nobody fully understood yet but everyone could feel.

Yuuji noticed it the moment he stepped outside.

Students were moving faster than usual. Heads down. Conversations cut short when he passed. Two third-years from House Aetherlight glanced at him and then immediately looked away.

➤ This Is Not A Drill

"That’s new," Yuuji muttered.

Elira fell into step beside him, grimoire tucked under one arm, expression already set to sharp. "You feel it too."

"Hard not to. What happened?"

"I don’t know yet." She paused. "That’s what concerns me."

## The Announcement

By the time they reached the central hall, a crowd had already gathered around the enchanted bulletin board. Not the usual cluster of students checking duel schedules and ranking updates. This was everyone. All four Houses, pressed together in uneasy silence, reading the same glowing notice.

Yuuji shouldered through to the front.

The notice was short. Official seal at the top — not the academy crest, but something older. A circular emblem he didn’t recognize, threaded with runes that made his eyes slide off it like water off glass.

He read it twice.

NOTICE TO ALL HALCYON ACADEMY STUDENTS AND FACULTY:

Effective immediately, the Inter-House Tournament has been placed under external review by the Arcane Oversight Commission. All scheduled matches are suspended pending investigation.

Reason: Unauthorized use of Restricted-Class magic within academy grounds.

Students of interest have been identified. They will be contacted directly.

— Commissioner Valdris Nour, AOC Division Three

Yuuji stared at the notice.

[System Alert: Major Event Flag Triggered]

➤ Event Type: External Authority Intervention

➤ Restricted-Class Magic: Detected On Academy Grounds

➤ Students of Interest: List Classified

➤ Yuuji’s Instinct: This Is Very Bad

➤ Yuuji’s Second Instinct: We Are On That List

"Restricted-class magic," Elira said beside him, voice carefully neutral.

"Shadowflame," Yuuji said quietly.

Neither of them said anything else.

## Valdris Nour

He arrived at noon.

No fanfare. No escort. Just a man walking through the academy’s front gates like he owned the concept of authority itself, and the building knew it.

Commissioner Valdris Nour was not what Yuuji expected from a government official. He was younger than the title implied — perhaps thirty, sharp-featured, with close-cropped dark hair and eyes the color of old iron. His coat bore the AOC emblem on the shoulder. He carried no weapon that Yuuji could see.

That was somehow worse.

[System Alert: New Character Detected — Valdris Nour]

➤ Title: Commissioner, AOC Division Three

➤ Affiliation: Arcane Oversight Commission

➤ Mana Signature: Heavily Suppressed (Reason: Unknown)

➤ Threat Level: High

➤ Demeanor: Polite. Terrifyingly Polite.

➤ Note: The System Does Not Like This Man.

➤ Additional Note: The System Rarely Says That.

Yuuji watched from the upper corridor as Nour crossed the entrance hall below, stopping to speak briefly with Headmistress Caldris. Whatever they said, Caldris’s expression didn’t change — but her posture did. Just slightly. Just enough.

Nour glanced up.

His eyes found Yuuji across the distance with unsettling precision, like he’d already known where to look.

He smiled. Small. Measured.

Then looked away.

Yuuji’s skin prickled.

"Who is he really," he muttered.

Kael appeared at his elbow from absolutely nowhere, which Yuuji had stopped being startled by. Gerald flickered once at Kael’s wrist, dark and agitated.

"Gerald doesn’t like him," Kael said.

"Gerald knocked over plant pots this morning."

"Gerald has good instincts."

Yuuji looked back down at the entrance hall. Nour was gone.

He hadn’t seen him leave.

-----

## The Summons

It came an hour later.

Three letters, delivered simultaneously to three different locations across campus.

One to Yuuji, in the middle of Enchantment Theory.

One to Elira, in the library.

One to Kael, who had been sitting in a windowsill communing with Gerald and probably knew it was coming.

The letters were identical. Short. Polite.

Mr. Hoshino / Lady Vortemer / Mr. Zyrion —

Your presence is requested in Conference Chamber One at the third bell.

This is not optional.

— Commissioner Nour

Yuuji read his three times.

Then he looked at the system window hovering in the corner of his vision, waiting for a notification. Some hint. Some quest marker or tip or sarcastic comment to cut the tension.

Nothing came.

[System: ...]

➤ ...

➤ Just Be Careful.

That was it. No joke. No reward prompt. No optional bonus objective.

Just: be careful.

Yuuji folded the letter.

"Yeah," he said quietly. "Okay."

## Conference Chamber One

The room was ordinary in the way that dangerous things sometimes were — plain stone walls, a long table, four chairs. A window overlooking the training yard. Late afternoon light cutting across the floor in long gold bars.

Nour sat at the head of the table when they entered. Hands folded. Expression pleasant.

Headmistress Caldris stood by the window with her back to the room. She didn’t turn when they came in.

That told Yuuji everything he needed to know about who was in charge of this meeting.

"Sit," Nour said.

They sat.

Nour looked at each of them in turn — Yuuji, Elira, Kael — with the methodical attention of someone cataloguing inventory.

"I’ll be direct," he said. "Three weeks ago, an anomalous mana signature was detected originating from within this academy. Tier-unclassified. Shadow-aspected. It registered on monitoring stations as far as the capital."

He looked at Kael.

Kael looked back, expression perfectly composed. Gerald was very still.

"The Arcane Oversight Commission has jurisdiction over any magic classified above Tier Seven," Nour continued. "Shadowflame, depending on its form, can reach Tier Nine. Possibly higher."

"Kael’s power is under control," Elira said.

"Lady Vortemer." Nour’s gaze shifted to her, and something in it sharpened almost imperceptibly. "Your family will be pleased to know I intend to be thorough. They did reach out to our office, after all."

The room went very quiet.

Elira’s expression didn’t change. But Yuuji saw her fingers tighten, just once, around the edge of the table.

[System Alert: Political Flag Triggered]

➤ Elira’s Family (House Vortemer) Has Contacted the AOC

➤ Reason: Unconfirmed

➤ Possible Motive: Leverage. Control. Removal.

➤ Target: Unknown (Possibly Multiple)

➤ Yuuji’s Gut Feeling: This Was Never About Kael.

Yuuji looked at Nour.

Nour was already looking at him.

"And you," Nour said pleasantly. "Yuuji Hoshino. Transfer student. No house affiliation. No registered bloodline." He tilted his head slightly. "No record prior to enrollment."

Yuuji said nothing.

"Curious," Nour said.

"I get that a lot," Yuuji replied.

Something moved behind Nour’s eyes. Not anger. Something colder than that.

"I’ll be conducting individual assessments over the next several days," he said, standing smoothly. "You’re free to go for now. But I’d ask that none of you leave academy grounds until the review is complete."

He smiled again.

"For your own safety, of course."

## After

They walked back through the corridors in silence.

The gold afternoon light had turned grey while they were inside. Clouds had moved in fast, the way they sometimes did around Halcyon when the magical climate shifted — responsive to mood, to mana, to things that hadn’t happened yet but were going to.

Kael spoke first.

"He’s not here about me."

"No," Elira agreed.

"He’s here about all of us," Yuuji said. "Separately. That’s the point. He wants to split us up, get information, find the angle that works on each of us individually."

Elira glanced at him. "You sound like you’ve dealt with this before."

"I’ve played enough strategy games to recognize when someone’s trying to divide a party." He paused. "Also he smiled too much. People who smile like that are always the worst ones."

[System Notification: Threat Assessment Updated — Valdris Nour]

➤ Classification: Antagonist (Confirmed)

➤ Method: Political. Precise. Patient.

➤ Immediate Danger Level: Low

➤ Long-Term Danger Level: Very High

➤ Current Goal: Unknown

➤ Note: He Already Knows More Than He Should.

➤ Note: About All Three of You.

➤ Note: Especially Yuuji.

Yuuji stared at that last line.

*Especially Yuuji.*

"Hey," he said to the system internally. "What does that mean."

The system didn’t answer.

They reached the corridor split — left toward the dorms, right toward the library. They stopped without planning to, the way people do when no one wants to be the first to walk away.

Kael looked at his hands. Gerald moved slowly beneath the surface, dark and quiet.

"Whatever he wants," Kael said, "he won’t get it easily."

"No," Elira said. "He won’t."

She looked at Yuuji.

He looked back.

And for once — no system notification. No quest prompt. No sarcastic commentary from the interface that had been his lifeline since the moment he’d arrived in this world.

Just the weight of something coming.

Real and close and not funny at all.

"Get some sleep," Yuuji said finally. "Tomorrow’s going to be worse."

No one argued.

-----

## That Night

Yuuji sat alone on the dorm room floor, back against the bed, system window open in front of him.

He scrolled through his stats, his quest log, his relationship charts — everything the game had been feeding him since day one.

He stopped on one entry he’d never paid much attention to before.

[Character File: Yuuji Hoshino]

➤ Role Assigned: NPC — Private Tutor

➤ Current Status: ...

➤ Current Status: [REDACTED]

➤ Note: This entry has been modified.

➤ Note: It was not modified by you.

Yuuji stared at it.

[Unknown System Intrusion Detected]

➤ Source: External

➤ Method: Unknown

➤ Duration: Ongoing

➤ Someone Has Been Reading Your File.

He closed the window slowly.

Outside, the clouds had covered the moon entirely.

Somewhere across campus, in a room Yuuji didn’t know existed, Commissioner Valdris Nour sat alone with a single open file.

He read the name at the top.

He smiled — the real one this time, the one he didn’t use in rooms with witnesses.

"There you are," he said quietly.

And closed the file.

*No next time preview. Just this:*

*Sleep well, Yuuji.*
