Chapter 140: Chapter 140: Closing the Eye

Lucifer fell.

The pocket dimension had collapsed. It deposited him exactly where the Sovereign’s Duel had initiated. But he was no longer standing on the back of a colossal dragon.

He was fifty thousand feet in the air and plummeted through the stratosphere.

The wind shrieked past his dark armor. It was a deafening freezing roar.

He did not panic. He analyzed his surroundings instantly.

Above him, the colossal bruised-purple eye of the Abyssal Sovereign was violently imploding.

The death of Malphas, the Demon King anchoring the rift from the inside, had shattered the dimensional stability.

The massive jagged edges of the tear were folding inward and crushed the green necrotic fire. The sky screamed as reality violently stitched itself back together.

[System Warning: Catastrophic Dimensional Implosion Detected!]

[Location: Upper Stratosphere.]

[Status: Abyssal Rift Collapsing.]

The sheer concussive shockwave of the collapsing rift hit Lucifer.

It was like a physical wall of air. The blast threw him violently downward and accelerated his terminal velocity.

He spun wildly and completely lost his orientation in the chaotic ash-filled sky.

Lucifer tried to activate his Warlord core. He needed to cast a localized gravity cushion or use Void Step to arrest his fall.

Nothing happened.

His mana pathways were completely dry.

The desperate point-blank Void Singularity he had detonated inside Malphas’s chest had drained the absolute last drop of his Archmage-level reserves.

The Gauntlet of the Void King sparked weakly and was entirely useless.

[System Alert: Mana Depleted.]

[Status: Magic nullified. Physical recovery required.]

He was a Level 50 Warlord possessing immense physical strength and density. But he was a mortal without flight capabilities falling from ten miles up.

When he hit the earth, the impact would pulverize every bone in his body.

He looked down through the chaotic wind.

Far below, he could see the massive glowing blue and iridescent dome of Zephyria’s planetary shield. The floating city was a tiny black speck hovering over the burning continent.

He was not falling toward the city. The shockwave of the imploding rift had blown him miles off course. He was plummeting directly toward the molten slag and toxic ash of the ruined surface world.

He was going to miss the net.

Lucifer gritted his teeth. He streamlined his body and tried to control his terrifying descent, but the atmospheric turbulence was too severe.

"Lucifer!"

The voice cut through the roaring wind. It was not through the comms rune. It was a physical desperate shout echoing in the freezing air.

Lucifer twisted his neck and fought the G-force.

A streak of absolute blinding twilight shot through the falling ash and smoke!

It was Elara.

The Eclipse Valkyrie was diving directly toward him. Her massive wings of solid moonlight and dark matter were pinned tight against her back to maximize her speed. Her Mythic Void-Weave armor shifted seamlessly and cut through the atmospheric friction.

She was not flying, she was falling with him. She used her own terminal velocity to catch up.

"I am here!" Elara screamed over the wind.

She extended her hand. Her golden eyes were wide and burned with fierce unadulterated panic. The calm composed Vanguard commander was gone. She was desperately reaching for the man she loved.

Lucifer reached out with his left hand.

The distance between them closed rapidly. Fifty feet. Twenty feet. Ten feet.

Their hands locked.

The physical impact of their hands meeting at terminal velocity nearly wrenched Lucifer’s shoulder out of its socket.

He grunted in pain, but his grip held firm. Elara’s armored fingers clamped around his wrist like a vice.

"Got you!" Elara roared.

She did not try to pull him up immediately. The momentum would have snapped both of their arms.

Instead, Elara wrapped her other arm tightly around his chest and pulled his heavy armored body flush against hers. She locked him into a desperate mid-air embrace.

"Brace!" Elara commanded.

She snapped her massive Twilight wings open.

The deceleration was brutal.

The sudden immense air resistance caught the massive wings of moonlight and void energy. The parachute effect slammed into them with bone-jarring force.

Lucifer felt the breath violently forced from his lungs. Elara gasped with her wings groaning under the incredible strain of arresting the fall of two heavily armored warriors.

They did not stop completely, but their catastrophic descent slowed to a manageable gliding drop.

They hung suspended in the freezing air thousands of feet above the ruined earth.

Elara held him tight against her chest with her breathing heavy and ragged. She did not let go of him to check her surroundings.

She simply buried her face in his dark leather shoulder and let out a long shuddering sigh of profound relief.

"I told you," Elara whispered fiercely over the howling wind. "I don’t drop my rider."

Lucifer slowly wrapped his arms around her waist and secured the hold. He rested his chin against the top of her helmet.

"Flawless catch, Sovereign," Lucifer murmured softly. His voice lacked the cold commanding edge of the Warlord. It was a quiet genuine acknowledgment of the woman who had just saved his life.

Above them, a final deafening thunderclap echoed across the heavens.

The massive purple eye of the Abyssal Sovereign imploded completely. The jagged dimensional tear sealed shut and left behind a perfectly clear undisturbed starry night sky.

The immediate threat of the Abyssal invasion was permanently severed.

[Global Status Update: Abyssal Rift Closed.]

[Event Concluded.]

"It’s over," Elara noted and looked up at the clear sky. "The door is shut. Malphas is dead."

"For now," Lucifer agreed smoothly.

He did not celebrate. He looked down past Elara’s shoulder.

The view of the surface world below was absolute horrifying desolation.

There were no cities. There were no forests. There were no oceans. The entire visible continent was a sprawling silent sea of gray ash and slow-moving rivers of sickly green highly corrosive Abyssal lava.

The Sanctum of Solaris, the Coalition, the Royal Army everything had been completely vaporized in the opening bombardment.

The old world was entirely dead.

There was nothing left to conquer on the ground. There were no kingdoms to rebuild. The earth was a graveyard.

But hovering majestically in the distance, a beacon of absolute defiance against the dark, was Zephyria.

The floating city looked beautiful. The iridescent pearl-like planetary shield glowed softly in the starlight. It protected the black-stone keep and the ten thousand Cryo-Pylons.

Inside that dome, thirteen million human survivors, a thousand mechanical Titans, and fifty thousand dragons were safe.

It was the solitary ark of humanity.

"The earth is gone, Lucifer," Elara whispered with her golden eyes tracking the endless sea of ash below them. "There is nothing left down there."

"I know," Lucifer said.

He tightened his grip on her waist. He did not feel despair. He felt absolute terrifying purpose. He had built his fortress specifically to survive this exact outcome.

"We don’t need the dirt," Lucifer stated smoothly. "We have the sky."

He looked at the distant glowing dome of his floating empire.

"Take us home, Elara," Lucifer commanded. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

Elara smiled. A fierce proud expression.

She beat her Twilight wings and caught the cold high-altitude wind. She angled their trajectory away from the ruined earth.

She flew smoothly through the starry night sky and carried the Warlord back to the city he had built to survive the end of the world.
