Chapter 28: Father’s Memories

The closer their boat got to the pier of the island, the more nervous the members of the Redflower Pirates became. Still, they managed to successfully dock their ship.

Captain Roseus was the first to step out onto the wooden dock. It felt weird not to be constantly swaying backwards and forwards after being on the waves for the past few days.

"Fucking hell, I miss the sea already," Kruger spat. Being an ex-navy man had made him favour the waters.

"I can’t say the same," Jackson sniffed. "Feels good to be on land again, but this place..."

Everyone looked around, eyes wandering far off into the distance of the trees that lay past the jungle.

There was no sign of human life here, as far as they could see. Only the pier.

Stepping off the ship made Roseus realise just how badly the wound on his back was hurting.

With Dawn by his side, he slowly began to travel down the wooden pier, urging his crew to follow.

Moments later, they arrived on the sandy beach, and Roseus stopped walking.

His crewmates turned to look at him.

"Something wrong, Rose?" Dawn asked perturbedly.

It was then that Roseus untied his father’s hat from his waist and held it in a grip that lacked confidence.

"Before we go any further, it would be smart for me to put on this hat. If there’s a place where my memories will be shown to me, it’s here on this island."

Everyone knew what Roseus was talking about.

His pact with the sea god Nammon had granted him a new positive effect on his father’s hat.

Positive Effect II ~ When equipped with the entire Captain Redeye set, the wearer can view old scenes of the Redeye Pirates’ journeys once passing through locations of importance.

Roseus had a hunch that such a scene might be shown to him if he wore the hat, however that brought forth the dangers that came with wearing the hat.

He was tempted to travel deeper inland before wearing it, so that the dangers of the ocean might not be able to reach them. However, the location that was more likely to hold any important memories was right there, near the shore.

Roseus looked around at his crew. Other than Lavender, they all seemed to understand and nodded their heads.

Dawn drew her weapon.

"This gives us a chance to use our skills, Redflowers. Fight strong and provide cover for the captain whilst he wears the hat. We don’t know what sort of state he’ll be in if he’s made to watch a memory."

Following her words, the rest of the crew members drew their swords and guns. Their bodies were far from their most powerful due to their wounds, however some of them felt more confident than ever. Not only would they get to try out their skills, but they would also earn more combat experience.

Captain Roseus sighed as he stared at the hat in his hand. His crew began to make a loose formation, circling around him.

Then, he placed the hat on his head...

"..."

First, Roseus felt the familiar sense of danger that appeared every time he wore his father’s treasures. It felt as though the creatures of the sea were latching themselves onto him like a coin to a magnet.

But there was no time to focus on the creatures that he momentarily saw climbing out of the water and heading towards his crew.

That was because soon, the crew disappeared, and so did the creatures.

In fact, the whole world began to change. The night skies above brightened until a sun had appeared, casting its glow onto him. The island itself changed too. The wooden pier that they had landed on was no longer there, and neither was their ship.

Instead, there was a different ship. One that was double the size of the Redflower Pirates’ ship. This ship flew a flag that had a black background, and a Redeye at its centre.

Roseus felt his eyes widen.

My father’s ship...

"Leaving you here hurts my chest, Blodwen. Does it have to be like this?" 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

A sudden voice appeared behind Roseus. He turned immediately towards it.

What he saw made him consider whether or not he had gone insane. That was because the sight was so surreal that it had made him forget the effects of his father’s hat.

When he remembered, he realised what was happening, and was able to make sense of things.

There, on the sandy beach, was his father, Captain Redeye.

The man was dressed in the same clothes that Roseus was wearing. He also wielded the same weapons, his cutlass and revolver. The main difference between the father and son was that the father still wore a jolly smile on his face, whereas Roseus’s was much more stern and serious.

In front of Redeye was a man that was easy to recognise. His hair was pristine and green, slicked back with oil so that it became hard and didn’t blow with the wind. His face was handsome and young, and he was dressed in a white buttoned shirt, black pantaloons, and a pirate’s hat. On both sides of his waist were two revolvers.

I’ve seen the man that my father is talking to before... That is Blodwen the Green, one of the first sailors of the Redeye Pirates, with a bounty of 40,000 Halo’s.

In the scene, Blodwen smiled and clapped his hand down on Redeye’s shoulder. He was a shorter man, so he had to look up into his captain’s eyes as he spoke.

"You already know it has to be like this, my friend. Don’t be hurt. Your son will thank us both for this later. Without a guide, he will die before even reaching the second ocean, let alone fulfilling a prophecy."

Redeye tilted his head to the side before smiling. It was a strange look. Who knew that a smile could carry so much power?

The captain then slapped his hand down on his crewmate’s shoulder even harder.

"Hey now," his voice came. "Don’t count me out just yet. For all we know, this prophecy is about me."

Then, after the scene was done, Roseus found his world returning to its previous state.
