Chapter 45: After Storm Comes Calm*

Roseus had no idea where he was firing. It was as though he was just a vessel for Rai’zac to do his bidding.

He found that rather than striking lightning like a direct projectile, he could create an arched effect that made the lightning rain down from the sky.

Once he watched it crash into the enemy ship, he had no idea whether his attack had been effective.

Then, he struck a second time.

Moments afterwards, he received the words from his system.

[You have defeated: Salt Blood Human]

[Elite Soul Absorbed]

[The Ocean Beckons You...]

It was one of the most euphoric feelings he had ever felt.

Despite not having much to do with its accuracy, and still with great threats looming around them in the ocean, he couldn’t help but rejoice.

He wanted to immediately give attention to his system, but he couldn’t. Not yet.

The pursuing navy ship had started to slow down, while the others continued to engage in battles against Nammon.

With Blodwen still pushing them from behind, they soon started to put distance between themselves and the chaos behind them.

...

Ten minutes passed, and the skies and waters started to return to their normal colours. It was still nighttime, but the water was no longer complete darkness.

Behind them in the distance, they could hear the cries of battle and rumbles of weaponry. However, the further they travelled, the less it felt like the problem involved them.

...

Thirty more minutes passed, and by this point they had put multiple kilometres between themselves and the chaos.

Blodwen had climbed onto the deck, completely drained of his energy. He was forced to head below deck and sleep.

From this point onward, they returned to the standard method of sailing.

As they sailed across the starlit waters, no words were spoken. Not until they were truly free would the Redflower Pirates stop holding their breath.

...

A few more hours passed, and finally the sun rose over the horizon.

The darkness of the sky was washed away and replaced with a vibrant blue that felt like a sign of better times.

The creatures of the ocean swam around freely. Sometimes schools of fish leapt from the surface before landing back in with gentle splashes.

Above, birds swooped down and scooped up some of these fish. Such was the natural process of the sea.

Roseus emerged onto the deck after a short nap and breathed in the fresh air as he leaned over the railing.

They had long since put the events of the previous night behind them. There were no signs of pursuers or sea gods.

He had removed all of his treasures, wishing for a short break from the encumbrances. Now, he wore only black pantaloons, rugged boots, and a long-sleeved white button shirt that most pirates wore. In his hand, he chewed on a small block of bread that served as his breakfast, and washed it down with bitter ale.

As he ate and drank, he finally used the time to check his system before engaging in conversation with any other members of his crew.

Much had changed after his battle...

...

There was a lot to take in.

First, Roseus focused on the fact that he had progressed to 71% through his rookie rank.

Such a large jump was unlike any progress he had made before. However, when he thought on the events of the battle, it made sense.

He had killed what he suspected was at least an Executive Officer, or even a Lieutenant. He had attacked a sea god directly. He had escaped a catastrophe. He had formed a temporary pact with a new god. He had slain a few mermen.

His feats were numerous.

Next, he focused on the fact he had ranked up in Weather Sense and awakened a new skill in its domain.

Storm Divination sounded like a more powerful version of Silius’s skill, Urge. However, from what he could tell, they worked differently.

Urge directly influenced rainfall itself, shaping its intensity and duration through instinctive will. Storm Divination, on the other hand, didn’t control rain so much as interpret and gently guide the broader storm system that produced it.

More importantly, Roseus thought they might further differentiate from one another the more they levelled up. For example, Silius might soon be able to ’Urge’ the rain to fall at boiling temperatures in a certain area.

Next, Frostbite Thrust and Goldrush had levelled up too. Frostbite Thrust had gained ranged usage, while Goldrush now granted a moderate increase to speed, making him even faster when wearing more treasures.

Finally, and most interesting, was his supreme system.

As he had expected, his pact with Nammon had been severed and was now replaced with a temporary pact formed with Rai’zac.

However, what he had not expected was for Nammon’s power to remain with him.

Wasn’t this wrong?

He didn’t complain. It was a power that was very useful to him. However, he decided that he would later ask Blodwen if keeping such a power was normal.

As for his pact with Rai’zac, he was grateful for the sea god, and it seemed the sea god was grateful for him too. Just through that conflict, he had progressed halfway through the pact rank.

...

With his system checked and him now up to date with his new skills and powers, Roseus made his way over to his crew.

It was time to discuss what had happened, and what their next move would be.
