“You can talk!”
“Y-you…”
Ruyi stood several meters away, pointing at Lihua, her eyes filled with a bit of fear but mostly wariness.
Lihua looked at her and said, “I don’t even want to talk to you.”
Ruyi paused, then took another step back.
Her eyes turned to Chen Changsheng, as if asking why he hadn’t told her earlier.
Chen Changsheng just said calmly, “I told you long ago. You just didn’t believe it.”
“I must be crazy, hearing a cat talk…”
Ruyi’s eyes looked blank, as if she couldn’t accept it right away. Staggering, she walked out.
“I’m going back to sleep.”
She almost tripped when she reached the door.
Lihua blinked, turned to look at Chen Changsheng, and said, “She seems not clever again.”
Chen Changsheng smiled helplessly. “She got scared.”
Lihua asked, “Is Lihua that scary?”
“A talking cat is scary enough.”
“Oh…”
Lihua blinked. “Then why wasn’t Good Human Chen scared?”
“Maybe I’ve seen too much?”
“Seen too much.”
“Yeah.”
So the Tabby Cat didn’t understand what “seen too much” meant.
Agreeing was good enough. It made her seem smart and not dumb. That was probably how Lihua understood things and words.
Lihua asked, “Will we still go to the temple fee?”
“Temple Fair.”
“Lihua knows. Just a slip of the tongue.”
Chen Changsheng glanced at her. Hmph, she put on quite a show.
“So, are we still going?”
“We should.”
“What’s fun at the Temple Fair?”
“There are shadow plays, lantern riddles, juggling… Maybe we’ll even see the Dragon King.”
“Sounds interesting.”
“Exactly.”
Lihua blinked and suddenly said, “The Mortal World is more fun than the Cultivation World.”
Chen Changsheng nodded after hearing this. “I think so too.”
“Hmm.”
The Tabby Cat’s attention wandered elsewhere, and she fell silent.
But moments later, she ran under a tree. She started scratching furiously at the ground, maybe hunting insects.
After all, she was a cat. Such things always interested her more.
—
Ruyi went home and lay down.
But she found she couldn’t sleep. She just couldn’t forget the moment the Tabby Cat spoke.
She got up several times and splashed cold water on her face over and over again.
Strangely, the cat speaking felt harder to accept than knowing Uncle Chen was a Deity.
Probably because she saw and heard the cat speak with her own eyes and ears…
After splashing water for the fourth time, Ruyi took a deep breath.
“Phew…”
She looked at her own reflection in the water jar.
It seemed she was starting to accept this fact.
Ruyi pursed her lips, leaned closer, and pinched her own face.
Well…
After the shock wore off, it really wasn’t that scary anymore.
Ruyi breathed a sigh of relief and walked out the door.
Seeing the sky had darkened, she remembered she’d promised Uncle Chen to go to the Temple Fair.
That cat would probably go too.
That’s crazy…
Ruyi thought to herself, then headed out. Two steps later, she arrived at Uncle Chen’s courtyard.
She thought for a moment and knocked on the door.
She became careful all of a sudden.
Maybe she was afraid Lihua would eat her.
She expected Uncle Chen to answer, but instead, it was the cat who opened the door.
Lihua glanced at her, then walked away.
Only then did Ruyi relax and step inside.
As she walked, she kept staring at the Tabby Cat walking ahead. Her curiosity flared up again.
Is this what demons are like?
She’d never seen one before.
Chen Changsheng, sitting on a long bench, glanced over and stood up. “The Temple Fair should be starting.”
“Mm.” Ruyi nodded.
Chen Changsheng reached out and picked up the Tabby Cat.
Lihua blinked. “Lihua can walk.”
This time Ruyi heard it clearly. She pursed her lips but said nothing.
Chen Changsheng said, “Too many people at the Temple Fair. You might get lost.”
“Lihua knows the way.” Lihua seemed a bit stubborn and added, “Walking won’t make you fat.”
Looks like she really fell for that line.
Chen Changsheng thought for a moment and said, “Then stay close.”
“Don’t worry. Lihua is very smart.”
Chen Changsheng chuckled. That was exactly what worried him.
He looked up at Ruyi. “Let’s go.”
After leaving the courtyard, Chen Changsheng walked ahead. Ruyi stayed beside him, constantly glancing at the Tabby Cat trailing behind Chen Changsheng.
After struggling internally for quite some time, Ruyi finally asked, “Why didn’t you… talk before?”
Lihua paused, looking up at her. “Lihua won’t talk to people who say bad things.”
Chen Changsheng chuckled. “Because Ruyi called her fat.”
Ruyi smacked her lips. “I apologized.”
Lihua said, “So Lihua has forgiven you.”
“O-oh, really…”
Ruyi gave an awkward smile.
She still felt a bit nervous inside, making things inevitably awkward.
Lihua looked at her and said, “You are weird.”
Ruyi seemed called out, scratching her head. “Huh? Am I?”
“Weird human.”
With that, Lihua stopped looking at Ruyi.
Ruyi just muttered “Hmph,” not understanding why Lihua said that.
Reaching the main street, the crowd grew thicker, and Lihua stopped speaking.
People were scattered along the street, all heading towards the Temple Fair.
Rare excitement like this shouldn’t be missed.
People chatted on the road – some in groups, others walking with two or three friends, carrying small jugs of wine, laughing and talking cheerfully all the way.
The Tabby Cat liked watching them. It found the people here more interesting than those in the Cultivation World, though it couldn’t really explain why.
As they neared the Temple Fair, streams of people converged, making it crowded.
When Lihua raised her eyes and saw that scene illuminated by countless lights, even she froze for a second.
It was a level of liveliness she’d never witnessed before.
Seeing her stunned, Ruyi asked, “Haven’t you ever seen a Temple Fair before?”
Lihua nodded, then shook her head.
Maybe she had seen it, but she forgot.
Her answers were always like that.
With so many people crowding in, Lihua’s view was blocked.
She couldn’t see anything even when craning her neck.
Lihua thought for a moment, then walked over to Ruyi’s side and tugged her clothes.
Ruyi paused, not understanding, so she crouched down.
Lihua then leaned close to her ear and whispered, “Can’t see.”
Ruyi understood after hearing this. Then she asked, “Do you want me to… hold you up?”
But as soon as the words were out, she regretted it.
Before Ruyi could straighten up, Lihua leaped onto her shoulder.
The cat’s fur brushed against Ruyi’s neck, tickling her a little. But it wasn’t bothersome at all.
