INFINITE GROWTH SYSTEM: FROM NOTHING TO ABSOLUTE POWER
Chapter 3 — FIRST BATTLE
The rain had not stopped.
It fell the same way it always did—cold, heavy, and indifferent.
But Ethan no longer saw it the same way.
Something had changed.
Not the world.
Him.
He stood in the alley where it all began, staring into the dim stretch of darkness ahead. The same place. The same silence. But now, silence felt different.
It felt like waiting.
The floating system interface hovered in his vision like a ghost that refused to leave.
INFINITE GROWTH SYSTEM
STATUS: ACTIVE
QUEST IN PROGRESS: SURVIVAL OF THE WEAK
TIME REMAINING: 19 HOURS 42 MINUTES
Ethan exhaled slowly.
"So it’s real..."
He had repeated that sentence too many times in the past hour. Each repetition made it less like disbelief... and more like acceptance.
A faint pulse flickered in his vision.
Then another warning appeared.
WARNING: UNKNOWN ENTITY PRESENCE DETECTED
Ethan’s body stiffened instantly.
"...Again."
He didn’t need to ask what it meant anymore.
He already knew.
Something was coming.
The alley behind him felt tighter than before. The rain no longer sounded random. It felt like background noise to something approaching.
Then—
Step.
A sound.
Not loud.
Not obvious.
But deliberate.
Ethan turned slowly.
Nothing.
Just darkness.
Then—
Step.
Closer.
His heartbeat began to rise.
"...Show yourself," he muttered.
The system flickered.
COMBAT MODE AVAILABLE
Ethan swallowed.
Combat mode.
That word didn’t belong in his life yesterday.
But today... it was being offered like survival itself depended on it.
Another step.
This time, Ethan saw it.
The air itself distorted.
Like reality was bending.
Then the creature emerged.
It was the same thing from before—but clearer now.
Wrong.
Not fully formed.
Its body looked human-shaped, but its edges flickered like broken video frames. Its face remained blank, smooth, unfinished—like someone had tried to draw a person and stopped halfway.
Ethan took a step back.
"...You’ve got to be kidding me."
The creature tilted its head.
And moved.
Fast.
Ethan reacted on instinct.
He dodged left.
The strike missed—but the wind pressure alone scratched his cheek.
Pain.
Real pain.
"That’s not normal speed!" he shouted.
SYSTEM RESPONSE: REFLEX ENHANCEMENT ACTIVE
Suddenly, something inside him shifted.
His body felt lighter.
Not stronger.
Faster.
The world slowed slightly.
The creature moved again.
Ethan saw it before it happened.
This time, he stepped aside cleanly.
The attack passed him.
His eyes widened.
"...I can see it."
The system flickered again.
STATS TEMPORARILY ENHANCED
Ethan didn’t wait to think.
He acted.
He grabbed a metal pipe lying near the wall—rusted, half-bent—but solid enough.
The creature turned.
It lunged again.
This time, Ethan moved first.
He swung.
CRACK!
The pipe connected with its shoulder. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
The creature staggered back slightly.
Ethan froze.
"...It worked?"
But relief was short-lived.
The creature’s head snapped toward him.
And for the first time—
It reacted.
Anger.
Or something like it.
It rushed him again.
Faster.
Harder.
Ethan barely blocked the strike.
The impact sent shock through his arms.
He stumbled back.
"Damn it!"
His grip tightened on the pipe.
His breathing grew heavier.
"I can’t keep doing this..."
The system flashed again.
NEW INFORMATION AVAILABLE: WEAK POINT DETECTION
Ethan blinked.
"...Weak point?"
Lines of faint blue light appeared over the creature’s body.
Not everywhere.
Only one place glowed slightly brighter.
Its chest.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
"...There."
The creature charged again.
Ethan didn’t dodge this time.
He waited.
Just a second.
Closer.
Closer—
Then he moved.
Fast.
Cleaner than before.
The world felt slower again.
His body twisted.
And the pipe struck directly into the glowing point.
CRACK!
The creature froze mid-motion.
Its body shook violently.
The blank face distorted for the first time.
Like static breaking apart.
Ethan stepped back quickly.
"...Did I—"
The creature collapsed to its knees.
Then—
Its body began to dissolve.
Not into blood.
Not into flesh.
But into fragments of light.
Like broken data being erased.
Ethan stared.
"...What the hell..."
The creature disappeared completely.
Silence returned.
Only rain remained.
Ethan stood there, breathing heavily, pipe still in his hand.
His arms trembled.
Not from fear this time.
From adrenaline.
From realization.
"I... won?"
The system responded immediately.
QUEST PROGRESS UPDATE: 1/1 ENTITY ELIMINATED
REWARD CALCULATING...
Ethan’s vision flickered.
A surge of energy hit his body.
Warm.
Sudden.
Like something inside him had been unlocked.
REWARD: +1 STAT POINT (AGILITY)
NEW SYSTEM ACCESS: BASIC COMBAT INSIGHT
Ethan blinked rapidly.
His breathing slowed slightly.
His body felt... different.
Not dramatically.
But noticeably.
Lighter when he moved.
Sharper when he focused.
"...This is real power," he whispered.
The system interface expanded again.
SYSTEM TIP: Growth begins through survival.
Combat accelerates evolution.
Ethan lowered the pipe slowly.
"...So this is how it works."
His voice was quieter now.
Not confused anymore.
Focused.
He looked at his hands.
For the first time in his life...
He didn’t feel powerless.
But something else stirred in the back of his mind.
A question.
If this thing could appear once...
Why did it appear to him?
And more importantly...
Was it the only one?
A faint flicker in the distance interrupted his thoughts.
Ethan looked up.
At the far end of the alley.
Another distortion.
Another presence.
His expression hardened.
"...You’re kidding me."
The system flashed once more.
WARNING: MULTIPLE ENTITIES DETECTED
Ethan tightened his grip on the pipe.
His heartbeat steadied.
Not because he was calm.
But because he had already crossed the point of turning back.
"If this is the world I’m in now..." he muttered.
Rain poured harder.
The alley darkened again.
And Ethan stepped forward.
"...then I’ll survive it."
