Inner Thoughts Exposed: Reborn General's Farming Daughter Has a System
Chapter 150: The Mansion in the Back Mountain (Part 1)
Xiao Xue was on its way to find Zhou Anran. It trotted over the forest area where some trees thrived and few had died.
It had found a single human’s footsteps, and most likely it was Zhou Anran’s. Despite its short legs, Xiao Xue was quite fast. It didn’t need to eat to gain energy, and could run non-stop.
In no time, it found a huge lone mansion. The white cat meowed slowly in wonder, and then, it jumped, searching for Zhou Anran’s traces.
Meanwhile, in the room, Zhou Anran had a stunned look on her face. She almost thought she was hallucinating when she saw Xiao Wei’s face again. However, the man was still standing not far from the door when the girl opened the door again.
He didn’t even glance at her before he retreated after speaking something with the girl.
"Lady, how are you feeling?" The girl, seemingly a servant, asked Zhou Anran.
Zhou Anran’s gaze was still directed to the closed door, her face full of complication and doubt.
It seemed that her husband didn’t even recognize her. When he appeared in the same back mountain, injured, he also lost his memories.
Has he regained these memories back now? For now, she wasn’t sure whether Xiao Wei was pretending not to know her or whether he didn’t remember the years they had spent together.
Even if he didn’t remember these years, didn’t he feel strange about the missing fifteen years of memories?
"Lady?" The servant waved her hand in front of Zhou Anran. She glanced at the door doubtfully.
Zhou Anran snapped back to her senses and braced herself to ask. "The noble gentleman... is it His Excellency who has rescued me?"
The servant was taken aback, and then slowly nodded. "Our Master rescued you when he and his men went to check the rumbling sound in the distance. It turned out to be a landslide."
She paused briefly before she continued. "They saw you almost getting buried by the soil, Lady." She sighed, looking at Zhou Anran with concern. "Do you feel hurt anywhere?"
At this moment, Zhou Anran suddenly realized that they indeed had taken care of her. Her clothes were clean—they looked almost new.
They must have bathed her as well after they fished her out of the disaster scene.
With this brief encounter with the man possessing a similar face to her husband, it proved that her guess was correct. He actually lived nearby.
"I am fine, just sore all over. It will recover in no time." Zhou Anran shook her head, feeling slightly embarrassed. There were some stinging pain all over her skin, which might have come from the scratches of tree barks and rocks.
"It’s a relief." The servant let out a relieved sigh. She seemed to be genuinely worried about her.
Zhou Anran studied the girl slightly. She seemed to be slightly older than her twin daughters.
"Lady, do you want to eat anything or perhaps drink something?" The girl offered, ready to go to the kitchen if Zhou Anran asked for it.
However, Zhou Anran merely shook her head, gesturing to the water on the bedside table. "Please get me a cup of water."
The girl poured a cup of water and handed it over to Zhou Anran to moisten her throat. After she finished drinking the water, Zhou Anran smiled and thanked the girl.
"It’s no trouble at all. It’s what I should do, Lady," the girl muttered, seemingly a little flattered by Zhou Anran thanking her.
Zhou Anran pursed her lips before she reminded her. "You don’t need to call me a lady. I am not a noble." She shook her head. "I am just a villager who lives around here."
The girl widened her eyes, and she stared at Zhou Anran’s face with surprise. "But... your face... you look like a noble..."
Zhou Anran blushed slightly. The girl didn’t have a rich vocabulary, but she understood what she was trying to say. She was complimenting her face, right?
"I am not." She shook her head again and clarified. "I am just a farmer."
She subconsciously fiddled with her hands after she said that. The rough texture of her hands were typical of farmers who often do arduous work of taking care of their fields.
The girl blinked, resembling an innocent fawn. In a mischievous tone, she said, "But... I still want to call you Lady since you are also our master’s guest."
Zhou Anran let out a sigh and didn’t argue with her anymore. Such stubbornness reminded her of Xiao Yuxi, her own daughter.
Soon, she became slightly anxious again when she remembered her current missing daughter and son. Although she was sure that Xiao Jingran had asked Village Head Su for help, would they be able to find her children?
Such a wide forest... and even she failed to find their traces.
She glanced at the door, wondering whether she should leave now. Her hand subconsciously pushed herself to stand, and she hissed.
Her hand was wounded, and also some parts she didn’t realize before.
"Lady?" The girl called out worriedly. "You stay on the bed, please."
She wasn’t the one who had bathed Zhou Anran, so she was unaware of the location of her wounds. But now, she could see the wounds and bruises on Zhou Anran’s hands and feet. "You are still wounded."
"I should leave." Zhou Anran muttered worriedly. She really wanted to find her children right now.
The girl shook her head. "You are not in a condition to go anywhere right now. Moreover, the nearest village is still quite far from here. It’s also dark, too dangerous to go alone."
Under the dim light from the oil lamp, she did notice Zhou Anran’s anxious look. The people in the mansion also actually had found it strange that there was a woman all alone in such a late night and was involved in a disaster at that.
They were quite suspicious of Zhou Anran’s identity.
