Chapter 151: Chapter 150: Harvest

The brown bear’s massive body was overwhelmingly imposing. Its eyes, as wide as copper bells, burned with rage, infuriated that Feng Shan had dared touch its food.

It opened its gaping, bloody mouth, revealing sharp teeth. Each roar thundered through the air, sending snowflakes scattering.

Feng Shan never would have guessed that the brown bear hadn’t made a den in the buildings, but was hiding in the snow instead.

They were less than a dozen meters apart.

Brown bears possess incredible explosive power, capable of reaching speeds of 56 km/h in an instant. Even with the snow in its way, it could cross a dozen meters in the blink of an eye.

Originally, Nash was at the rear of the group, but he had run up to help Feng Shan dig out the musk ox, never expecting a brown bear to launch a sneak attack from behind.

And now, the one at the back of the line was Su Ziweng. Accustomed to protected hunts, he had absolutely no experience dealing with this kind of sudden situation. He turned his head to see a massive brown bear lunging right at him.

His mind instantly went blank.

’This bear is huge,’ he thought. ’Its mouth could probably swallow my head!’

The moment of crisis was upon them.

"Get out of the way!" Feng Shan raised his gun and pulled the trigger without hesitation.

A continuous series of gunshots rang out. A cut appeared on Su Ziweng’s cheek, the seeping blood instantly freezing into dark red crystals.

The next moment.

The brown bear’s roar came to an abrupt halt as its body crashed into Su Ziweng, pinning him heavily underneath.

"Ziweng!"

"Xiaosu!"

"Su!"

The others finally reacted, raising their guns and aiming at the brown bear lying on the snow, terrified that Su Ziweng had met a terrible fate.

Zhang Kai was completely stunned.

’An accident on my first tour, and with a rich kid like Su Ziweng, of all people,’ he thought. ’My career is completely finished.’

"What are you all standing there for? Help him!" Feng Shan was rendered speechless by their reactions. They had zero safety awareness. He’d reminded them to be careful, but in the end, not a single one had their gun ready.

Nash and Yves ran to the brown bear’s side, prodded its eyes and nose with their gun barrels, and only after confirming it wasn’t breathing did they start to move the carcass.

The thousand-pound brown bear lay on the ground like a small hill; two people alone couldn’t possibly move it.

Feng Shan and the others worked together, pulling and tugging, and finally managed to roll the bear’s carcass over.

"Ziweng, are you hurt?!" Feng Yang quickly knelt beside Su Ziweng, who was lying on his back with his eyes wide open, and shouted.

He wasn’t injured. Thankfully, the snow was thick. As the bear’s body crashed down, it also pushed Su Ziweng deep into the snowdrift. He was most likely just frightened.

Hearing someone call his name, Su Ziweng’s dilated pupils gradually contracted as he regained consciousness. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

He immediately broke into a grin.

"Fourth Uncle, that was so fucking exciting! Fucking awesome!"

He could still swear, which meant he was really fine.

Only then did everyone relax.

Feng Yang no longer cared about his identity being revealed and slapped Su Ziweng heavily on the shoulder.

"You little brat! Is that gun in your hand a fire poker? Where’s all that energy you use to chase girls? You nearly scared me to death! If something had happened to you, how could I have faced your mother? You scared the hell out of me!"

Seeing Su Ziweng still lying in the snow, Feng Yang cursed irritably, "Getting addicted to lying there, are you? Get up!"

"I... I..." Su Ziweng had an embarrassed look on his face as he stammered, "Fourth Uncle, I think I peed my pants!"

As soon as he said this, the atmosphere instantly turned strange.

Everyone’s eyes unconsciously fell on Su Ziweng, some surprised, others trying to stifle their laughter.

At that moment, Su Ziweng’s face was beet red, so embarrassed he wished he could find a hole to crawl into.

"Get up first. In that cold storage room just now, I saw a few pairs of cold-weather pants. Go change, or your pants will be impossible to take off once the piss freezes," Feng Shan said, frowning as if getting a headache.

"It’s already frozen. I think it’s all stuck together. Brother Feng, it won’t... get frostbitten, will it?" Su Ziweng said in a low voice. After being pulled up by Feng Yang, he walked with his legs apart like a duck, waddling toward the container building.

"Bro, what are we gonna do with such a big bear?" Black Hide asked, looking at the brown bear’s carcass on the snow with lingering fear.

"We’ll take it back to camp first. Dealing with it here will attract other predators with the smell of blood."

Feng Shan told Yves to go back to the plane and get the sled. Then he looked at the others. "Do you want to take pictures? It’s rare to come across a brown bear this big."

Pictures.

They were a must.

After learning Su Ziweng was safe, Zhang Kai immediately came back to life and took out his phone. The others did the same.

Normally, they could only see bears in a zoo, or at best, from a car in a wildlife park.

But those bears were all domesticated, not only lacking any wildness but also quite thin.

This was nothing like those. This was a pure wild brown bear, well over a thousand pounds, fat and sturdy. Lying down next to it, you wouldn’t even be as wide as the bear was tall. Its paws were nearly the size of pot lids.

By taking care of this brown bear that had wrecked Kevik Camp, they could also consider the matter with Aunt Susan settled.

Feng Shan also took a few photos, reloaded his Type 56 carbine, and told Nash to stay and look after the others.

He then took Prince and Princess to check the perimeter of the camp to see if he had missed any other animals.

When he returned after completing a circuit, the area around the bear’s carcass was bustling with activity.

His spirits restored, Su Ziweng was whooping and hollering, making all sorts of poses over the bear’s carcass, even holding a paw up to his face to compare its size.

Ahem!!

Feng Shan coughed deliberately. "It’s about time we headed back."

"Brother Feng, can I discuss something with you?" Su Ziweng sidled up with a grin. "I just talked it over with the guys. Can you let me have this bear? I’ll pay 100,000 US Dollar for it."

100,000 US Dollar was certainly a good price. However, Feng Shan frowned.

"You can, but the problem is how you’ll get this bear out of the country. Unprocessed meat products can’t be exported, especially meat from wild animals like this. It’s very troublesome, and you’ll have to involve the customs and quarantine bureau."

"No, no, no, you misunderstood!" Su Ziweng waved his hands frantically. "I don’t want the meat. I mean I want to have it made into a taxidermy specimen."

"Alright then. When we get back, go find Tom. He has connections. You two can discuss it yourselves."

’Just the hide, not the meat,’ Feng Shan thought. ’I’ll lose out on a bearskin, but I get to keep the meat and get 100,000 US Dollar. This deal is definitely worth it.’

After a moment’s consideration, Feng Shan nodded and agreed.

The next step was to load the bear’s carcass onto the sled and drag it back to the runway.

Fortunately, the P-750’s maximum payload was 1900 kilograms. Subtracting the nine occupants, it could just barely fit the brown bear.

It just needed a longer takeoff roll.

Back at River Beach Camp.

The women, having heard the news, all ran out to see the spectacle.

When the 500-plus-kilogram brown bear was dragged out of the cabin, the women all gasped in amazement. Xiaohua was so scared she hid in Jenny’s arms.

"Buddy, where’d you hunt such a huge brown bear? It’s even bigger than the one from the last forest hunt."

Tom came forward, pried open the bear’s mouth, and his voice was filled with envy when he saw the finger-length fangs.

"It’s the same one that bit Susan. It didn’t retreat to the Tundra, but made Kevik Camp its den instead," Feng Shan explained briefly.

The news of Susan being injured by a brown bear hadn’t made much of a stir in the Far North Tundra. Incidents of people being injured by animals happened constantly every year, and they didn’t get nearly as much attention as Feng Shan’s feat of braving the Blizzard to save people.

"So it was this one. Susan will definitely be grateful," Tom nodded, sighing slightly before putting on a businessman’s smile. "How are you planning to deal with this bear?"

"We’re making it into a specimen. We don’t want the meat!" Su Ziweng quickly jumped in, declaring his ownership of the bear.

"Of course! An excellent decision. This brown bear will absolutely make a beautiful specimen," Tom said, his smile widening.

"Let’s get it back to camp first," Feng Shan said. Seeing that Nash had already brought the snowmobile over, he took the sled’s tow hook and attached it to the back of the vehicle.

The rest of them got on other snowmobiles and followed behind in a grand procession.

Back at the camp.

They placed the bear’s carcass on a wooden workbench. Because they needed to peel the hide off completely intact for the specimen, they couldn’t use a crude skinning method.

A bearskin worth 100,000 US Dollar meant they had to be responsible to their client.

This could be considered their first bit of income to recoup their investment.

After all, with a 20 million loan from the bank, it wouldn’t do to only have expenses and no income.

Feng Shan had been mulling this over for a long time.

’To be honest, I’m an orphan who didn’t even finish middle school. I struggled to raise a group of younger orphans, acting as both their father and mother. Just when I’d made some progress, I was imprisoned for seven years over *that incident*, completely cutting me off from society.’

’After getting out, I came to the Crown Territory. When it came to development, business, or planning... I was completely clueless.’

’The only things I can rely on are the Witch and the Fire Seed, but I can’t tell another soul about them.’

’It was only after coming to Alaska that my horizons broadened. Thanks to the selfless help from Frank and the people around me, I managed to grope my way toward this path of tourism.’

’And tourism is just the Crown Territory’s first attempt.’

’If it works out, I can use the Fire Seed to build a model combining tourism with a farm-stay, and then branch out into a series of related industries.’

’That way, I can pay off the loan within five years and maybe even turn a profit.’

"Khilla." Nash held a small knife, waiting for Feng Shan to start skinning. When Feng Shan didn’t make a move after a while, he prompted him quietly.

Feng Shan snapped out of his thoughts and gave Nash an apologetic smile. He then raised the sharp knife and made an incision down the brown bear’s thick belly.

As the bear’s abdomen was cut open, a thick layer of bright white fat and the dark red lean meat beneath were revealed to everyone.

You could tell this brown bear had lived a good life.

Unfortunately, it shouldn’t have shown up at Kevik Camp and hurt people.

After opening the abdomen, the two of them first removed the bear’s internal organs, which spilled out in a large, messy heap.

Feng Shan had hunted a brown bear before and kept some of the organs. To be honest, they didn’t taste very good. They had a strong, gamey smell that lingered even after being treated with a lot of spices.

This time, Feng Shan only planned to keep the bear’s gallbladder and the Bear Whip to soak in alcohol. The rest of the organs would be fed to the White Wolf Pack.

After dealing with the organs, the skinning process officially began.

Working with two small knives at once, they moved along the layer between hide and flesh, peeling the bearskin off bit by bit.

It was a pity about the four bear paws. Feng Shan had been planning to see what they tasted like, but since the taxidermy specimen required the paws and head to be intact, he would have to postpone that desire.

Beside the workbench, Zhang Kai, Hu Zi, and the others stared with wide eyes, watching the two of them expertly butcher the brown bear with the skill of master butchers.

The expressions on Hu Zi and Black Hide’s faces were particularly complicated.

’Killing a bear!’

’Back home, you’d get at least ten years in prison for this.’

’But in a foreign country, you can just hunt openly.’

’This is so wild!’
