Landlord in the Arctic
Chapter 169 - 168: Taken Down
When Justice shouted those words, the entire sheriff’s office erupted in an uproar.
Everyone looked at Justice, who was acting like a madman in the holding cell, their eyes filled with shock.
He really was the killer.
Just then, Justice threw himself to the floor. Like a large halibut flopped onto a deck, he thrashed desperately, letting out gut-wrenching wails.
"Let me out! I confess! I was the one who killed him! And Jason and Leo were with me! Jason drove the boat, Leo was the lookout, and I fired the gun! Demon, stop biting me! Make it stop biting me! It hurts!"
The air seemed to freeze in that moment, with only Justice’s crazed voice echoing through the room.
The onlookers were stunned by his inexplicable breakdown, and the sheriff’s office fell deathly quiet.
Feng Shan smirked coldly. He got up, walked out of the holding cell, and approached Sheriff Nick. The sheriff’s gaze was no longer calm; it was a complex mixture of deep wariness, astonishment, and confusion.
"Sir, you see? Justice has confessed."
Sheriff Nick nodded. "Yes, I heard everything. You can take him away now. May I ask your name? It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a sheriff as dedicated as you, still pursuing a two-year-old case."
"Feng Shan, Chief Sheriff of the Alaska Far North Region and the Crown Territory."
Feng Shan waved a hand. Nash and Wawa rushed into the holding cell, grabbed the boneless heap that was Justice by his arms, and hauled him out of the room.
None of the crewmen or residents inside dared to step forward and stop them now.
Outside the duty office, the gawking crowd had only heard bloodcurdling screams from within, but they had no idea what had actually happened.
When Justice appeared, a blubbering mess of snot and tears, all eyes focused on him.
To avoid any unnecessary trouble, Feng Shan announced the result on the spot.
"Everyone, after questioning, Justice has confessed. He is the murderer. Sheriff Nick has confirmed it."
The statement sent waves of shock through the crowd, like a whale breaching the calm surface of the sea.
An uproar immediately swept through them.
People stared at Justice, their eyes filled with disbelief.
"That’s right, I did it! Take me away, quickly! I confess!"
Justice suddenly realized that as long as he left the sheriff’s office, that terrifying Walrus Person wouldn’t be near him. A wave of relief washed over him at this thought, and he quickly confessed his crimes again in front of everyone.
A murderer.
Now, none of the crewmen or fishermen in the crowd spoke up for him. They silently backed away, the image they’d had of Justice instantly crumbling.
"Feng, did you really come to Saint Paul Island just for this?!" Frank, Alvin, and Eugene pushed through the crowd to Feng Shan.
"I did," Feng Shan nodded.
"My God, you catch a criminal and still don’t forget to buy a crabbing boat." Frank slapped his forehead, a speechless expression on his face.
"It’s called handling business and my duties at the same time," Feng Shan said with a self-satisfied smile. "How’s the crabbing boat deal coming along?"
Frank caught a strong whiff of piss and shit, pinching his nose as he looked at Justice with disgust.
"You handle your business first, then we can talk about the boat. Fuck, did this bastard shit himself?"
’If it were you, you’d have shit your pants too.’
Feng Shan turned to his future crabbing boat captain.
"Are there any planes for charter on the island? I need to get this bastard to Fairbanks."
Alvin nodded quickly. "There are planes for transporting snow crabs."
"Nash, Wawa, you two take him to Fairbanks and hand him over to Chief Bird. He’ll know what to do." Feng Shan turned to make the arrangements, also asking Alvin to take them to the airport and find a plane.
「...」
After watching the plane disappear into the clouds, Feng Shan turned and slung an arm around Frank’s shoulders. "My work here is done. Now I can finally explore this little island."
"This is the boonies. No bars, no clubs, and even the air stinks of fish. I hate it here." Frank irritably pushed Feng Shan’s arm away and couldn’t help but complain, "Hurry up and finalize the contract so I can get out of here."
Feng Shan shrugged helplessly at Eugene.
They arrived at the cabin Frank was renting—a traditional A-frame cabin on a hillside. Standing on the lawn in front, they had a clear view of the beach below and the Merchant Fishing Pier in the distance.
"This place is great!"
"If you like it, then buy it. It’s not expensive, only a couple hundred thousand US Dollars," Frank grumbled.
Hearing this, Feng Shan’s eyes lit up. ’He’s right. Once the crabbing boat is permanently based on Saint Paul Island, I’ll be coming here often.’
’Instead of staying in a hotel, it would be better to buy a house on the island.’
"Let’s go, let’s have a look inside!"
He pushed Frank into the cabin. The entire house was built from wood. Although the logs weren’t as thick as those at the River Beach Camp, the 40-centimeter thickness was more than enough to withstand the cold of the Bering Sea.
It was clear the owner cherished this house. From the walls and beams to the floors, tables, and chairs, even the dining area was made of solid, sturdy wood. The passage of time had given it a rich, oiled sheen.
The cabin had one and a half stories. The ground floor contained the living room, kitchen, and dining area, while the second floor was a half-story loft bedroom.
The owner had also added beautiful carvings to the edges of the windows, eaves, and doorframe, giving the cozy cabin an extra touch of life.
"How much is this house?"
"180,000 US Dollars." Frank seemed very unhappy with the price.
’How dare they ask for such a high price in such a remote and desolate place?’
The more Feng Shan looked, the more pleased he was. "Sounds good. Talk to the owner. If there are no problems, I’ll buy it."
Frank put on a pained face and shot an aggrieved look at Eugene. "See this? Having a greedy kid in the family is a real headache. He wants to buy everything he sees."
Eugene and Alvin gave a couple of awkward laughs, not daring to comment.
’Their relationship is impossible to figure out.’
’One calls the other "grandma," and that one calls him "kid."’
’What a complicated family.’
"Alright," Frank said, having finished his call. "The owner will be here soon. Let’s talk about the crabbing boat." He motioned for the two to return to the living room.
"Mr. Feng, Mr. Frank and I have basically settled the terms for the crabbing boat purchase. Now we just need to sign a few documents, and that crabbing boat will be yours!" Eugene took a thick stack of papers from his briefcase and placed it on the table.
Feng Shan casually picked up a document and glanced at Frank, who nodded to show there were no issues.
Eugene continued.
"According to the contract, you need to pay 50% of the boat’s price within one week, with the remainder to be paid off over three years. Our Binshi Group Company will provide seven years of maintenance service free of charge, include a full set of crab pots, and handle the subsequent vessel registration procedures."
Frank was the expert when it came to contracts, but anything involving the crabbing boat itself required the captain’s confirmation.
Feng Shan looked at Alvin, who also nodded.
’Since the lawyer and the captain are both fine with it, then naturally I have no problem either.’
He picked up a pen and swiftly signed his name on the documents.
Seeing Feng Shan sign, the knot of anxiety in Eugene’s stomach finally loosened. A happy smile spread across his face, and as a little thank you, he revealed a secret.
"Mr. Feng, Russia’s economy hasn’t been doing too well these past few years. There are several more CCA5712LS crabbing boats under construction at the Nakhodka Shipyard. Damen Engineering can no longer afford such a massive manufacturing cost. If you’re interested in buying more boats, you might want to consider them."
"I can talk to Damen Engineering in a personal capacity. They might be willing to sell those boats. Of course, the price would definitely be lower than the one you’re buying now."
’Well, damn!’
’He’s trying to poach business right from under his own company’s nose, right in front of a client.’
He had learned from Alvin that the CCA5712LS was an extremely advanced crabbing boat. Not only could it catch snow crabs, but with a change of equipment, it could also be used for fishing, making it a multi-purpose vessel. It was, without a doubt, the best type of crabbing boat in Alaska.
’With five boats like this, I could form a whole fishing fleet.’
A cryptic smile touched Feng Shan’s lips. "Of course I’m interested. You can talk to them. If the price is right, I’d like to take those boats off their hands. You’ll get a handsome commission."
"Yes, yes, absolutely no problem! I have a friend who works at Damen Engineering." Eugene stood up joyfully, his face beaming with excitement, as if he could see a path paved with gold opening up before him.
’How much commission could I make selling this one boat for the Binshi Group Company? Headquarters takes a cut, upper management takes another cut, and I’m left with less than 300,000. But if I sell those few CCA5712LS crabbing boats from the Nakhodka Shipyard... Damen Engineering will give me a commission, and Feng Shan will give me another. I could guarantee making 500,000 to 1 million US Dollars per boat. That stingy Binshi Group Company can go to hell.’
"Buddy, are you planning to build a fishing fleet?" Frank asked, frowning in confusion, having caught the implication in Feng Shan’s words.
’A whole fleet. Putting aside the money issue, there are all sorts of other things that would need to be sorted out. That includes all kinds of United States taxes. Doing business in the Crown Territory is no problem—it’s basically similar to a reservation, maybe even more independent. But now Feng Shan wants to step outside the Crown Territory and face the shameless Internal Revenue Service.’
"Don’t worry. I’ll have to face it sooner or later. I’m not the same person I was when I first arrived." Feng Shan knew what Frank was worried about and stepped forward to hug him.
"Alright then." Frank relaxed and patted Feng Shan on the back. "I’ve got your back. If you want to play, let’s play!"
Their intimate gesture was seriously awkward to watch. It made Eugene and Alvin’s hearts pound, and they quickly turned their heads, pretending they hadn’t seen a thing.
Just then, there was a soft knock on the door.
Alvin hurried to open it. Seeing who it was, he offered a polite greeting.
"Lady Margaret, you’re here."
"Yes, I heard someone is interested in buying my cabin," Lady Margaret said with a smile as she entered the room.
"Lady Margaret, this cabin is yours?" Feng Shan was quite surprised. He hadn’t expected the owner to be the innkeeper.
"Yes, my husband built this cabin. It’s been empty since he passed away, though I occasionally rent it out to tourists."
Lady Margaret glanced around the room, a trace of nostalgia in her eyes.
Her voice was soft, as if she were reminiscing about the good old days.
Ahem!
Frank coughed deliberately. "Shall we get straight to the point?"
...
