Legacy of the God of War
Chapter 345: The Prophecy Unveiled
After receiving Chen Lao’s ominous message, Li Chen wasted no time. He immediately contacted Master Chen Yunlong, informing the old man that Chen Lao had requested their presence. The next day, Li Chen picked up Chen Yunlong from his villa, and they drove directly to Li Yanyan’s estate.
In the car, an uneasy silence hung between them until Li Chen finally spoke up. "What do you think that bastard wants from us?"
Chen Yunlong stroked his wispy beard. "He must have insight into the prophecy as well."
Li Chen frowned, keeping his eyes focused on the road ahead. "What prophecy? You already knew about this, but didn’t think to tell me?"
The old master sighed deeply. "You may be the Chosen One, but you also have a family - a pregnant wife - to focus on. I didn’t want to burden you unnecessarily."
"If I’m going to die, I think I have a right to know," Li Chen countered, his knuckles tightening on the steering wheel.
Chen Yunlong remained silent, understanding his pupil’s anger yet firm in his reasoning. Telling Li Chen could have shattered his focus on his loved ones during this pivotal time.
Upon arriving at Li Yanyan’s villa, they descended straight to the basement cells holding the notorious Chen Lao. As they neared his solitary confinement, the old man opened his eyes from a meditative pose.
"Ah, my dearest brother," Chen Lao sneered. "Father’s favored child."
Chen Yunlong’s expression remained impassive. "Chen Lao."
The prisoner chuckled darkly. "Such a cold greeting for one who shares your blood. Very well, keep your distance then." His mocking gaze fell upon Li Chen. "Oh Chosen One, I see your power has grown immensely since our last encounter."
Li Chen didn’t rise to the bait. "I don’t have all day for your games. Get to the point."
"What’s your hurry?" Chen Lao goaded. "You need me, so calm yourself. Take a seat - we have much to discuss."
Chen Yunlong’s jaw clenched. "Enough stalling, brother. What is it you want from us?"
"The two of you are entirely too stiff and serious," the old man chided with a dismissive wave. "Even you, my own brother, saw no need to visit me during these long months of confinement."
A flicker of something like regret passed over Chen Yunlong’s features. "I remember the rift that grew between us after Father named me as his successor - the true Guardian."
Chen Lao’s eyes glinted with bitter resentment. "Yes, I still cannot fathom how our father overlooked his eldest son’s prowess and bestowed that honor upon you instead."
Growing impatient, Li Chen cut in. "Are you going to talk, or just keep wasting our time?"
With that, Chen Lao launched into a lengthy exposition, revealing staggering truths and details that left both Li Chen and Chen Yunlong reeling. As the gravity of the old man’s words sank in, Chen Yunlong could only gape at his treacherous sibling.
"How...how do you know all this?"
A cruel smile twisted Chen Lao’s lips. "You forget, dear brother, I am older and knew far more of our family’s deepest secrets while you were still running about in soiled nappies."
Li Chen’s mind spun as he grappled with the revelations. "So what does this mean for me?"
"It means precisely what I’ve disclosed," Chen Lao stated matter-of-factly. "You are the brilliant Chosen One, blessed with the ancient soul of the War God himself. I’m sure the Truth will become clear soon enough."
Undeterred, Li Chen pressed on. "How do we stop what’s coming?"
But Chen Lao only shook his head, utterly devoid of sympathy. "One cannot halt what has been prophesied eons ago, young man. The question is how you will deal with it when its jaws clamp shut around you."
Chen Yunlong’s expression was grave. "Where do we seek out this...coming peril?"
A serpentine smile crept across the old man’s face. "I presume the Chosen One already has five tattered pages in his possession, yes? Study them closely - they are far more than mere martial techniques and combat forms. Even the War God was unaware of their deeper purpose and power."
As Chen Lao’s malicious laughter echoed in the dank cell, Li Chen felt an icy chill grip his soul. The ramblings of a demented mind, or a dire warning of a reckoning yet to come? One thing was certain - he could no longer avoid seeking the whole, terrible Truth.
No matter how horrific the revelations from the prophetic pages might prove, Li Chen knew he must steel himself. His destiny was rapidly coalescing, and cataclysmic forces were aligning against him.
The Chosen One could only pray he would prove strong enough to withstand the coming storm. Because if Chen Lao’s words rang true, the gravest battle for the fate of all reality was hurtling towards them all.
After the chilling encounter with Chen Lao, Li Chen and Chen Yunlong departed the dank cells in a heavy silence, the former’s mind reeling from the ominous revelations. As they made their way back up to the main villa, Chen Yunlong could see the internal struggle playing out behind his pupil’s furrowed brow.
"I know you have many questions, many doubts swirling after what my brother disclosed," the old master said, his voice low. "But take heart - whatever trials lie ahead, you will not face them alone."
Li Chen’s jaw tightened, conflicting emotions roiling within him. "Did you truly know nothing of these prophecies until now? Or were you also trying to shield me, like with the news of my potential death?"
Chen Yunlong held the younger man’s probing gaze. "I給swear on my life, Chen Lao’s words caught me as off-guard as they did you. Clearly he had access to more of our family’s deepest secrets and histories than even I realized."
Li Chen exhaled a weary sigh, some of the tension leaving his rigid posture. He knew his master well enough to detect any deception. "I believe you. It’s just...a lot to process all at once."
"Of course," Chen Yunlong said sympathetically. "Discovering you are the prophesized instrument of salvation for all reality would unsettle even the most stoic of souls."
A fleeting smile, tinged with grim humor, quirked Li Chen’s lips. "You make it sound so grand and heroic when you put it like that. I just feel...overwhelmed. Scared, if I’m being honest."
Chen Yunlong placed a comforting hand on his pupil’s shoulder. "That is only natural, my friend. No mortal should ever have to shoulder such an incomprehensible burden alone."
Li Chen felt a swell of gratitude and affection for his mentor and sworn brother. "I’m thankful I don’t have to. With you, my family, and the essence of the War God’s spirit by my side...perhaps I can find the strength to face whatever unholy forces are about to be unleashed."
"You need only look within," Chen Yunlong stated firmly. "The Chosen One’s power resonates in your very being. We will help guide and nurture it, but that radiant force, that light to conquer the darkness? It comes from you alone, Li Chen."
The profundity of the old master’s wisdom washed over Li Chen in calming waves. He straightened, squaring his shoulders as a sense of resolute determination took root.
"You’re right. No more doubts, no more fear." His gaze became fiercely focused, burning with an inner fire. "If Chen Lao spoke truly, then the final battle for the fate of existence itself draws near. And I will be ready to meet it head on."
Chen Yunlong smiled approvingly at the resurgence of unbreakable spirit within his protege. "That’s it. Forge your resolve like a burning blade. You have within you the power to rewrite the cosmos itself!"
Nodding firmly, Li Chen turned his steely gaze downwards to the cracked leather bundle containing the prophetic pages - the key to unlocking both his destiny and, perhaps, the means to overcome it.
"Then I suppose we should start hunting for answers while there’s still time," he said grimly. "Those tattered pages clearly hold secrets even greater than the War God himself fathomed. If there’s any path to overcoming this coming darkness, it’s woven in those threads."
Chen Yunlong’s expression turned grave once more. "Our path will be arduous, and fraught with unimaginable peril at every turn. But I have the utmost faith that you, Li Chen, were born to walk it and emerge victorious."
The only way to uncover what Chen Lao spoke off, was to try and study the pages and understand its secrets clearly.
As the two strode back towards the light of the upper villa, a tangible sense of determination arose between them, intermingled with the electric crackle of destiny accelerating towards its world-shattering conclusion. The forces of creation and oblivion were stirring, and they would all soon be swept up in their cosmic wake.
Li Chen could only pray that when that maelstrom finally broke, he would prove worthy of being called the Chosen One - the solitary bastion standing defiant against the infinite night.
