Legacy of the God of War
Chapter 363: Whispers in the Shadows
The early morning sun cast long shadows across the manicured lawns of the Tang villa as Yang Mei made her way towards the staff quarters. Her steps were purposeful, her eyes darting about to ensure she wasn’t being observed. It had been two days since she and Zhao Liang had moved in, and the time had come to set their plans in motion.
As she approached the service entrance, Yang Mei smoothed down her designer blouse and plastered on her most charming smile. A young maid was just exiting the building, a basket of laundry balanced on her hip.
"Oh, good morning!" Yang Mei called out, her voice dripping with false cheer. "You must be working so hard already. I’m Yang Mei, Ziyi’s mother. I don’t believe we’ve been properly introduced."
The maid, startled by the sudden attention, nearly dropped her basket. "G-good morning, ma’am," she stammered, clearly unsure of how to address this new resident of the villa.
Yang Mei waved away the formality. "Please, call me Yang Mei. I was hoping I might have a word with you and some of the other staff. I’d love to get to know the people who take such wonderful care of my son’s home."
The maid’s eyes widened, her gaze darting nervously towards the main house. "I’m not sure that’s appropriate, ma’am. We have strict schedules to keep."
Yang Mei’s smile never faltered, but a hint of steel crept into her voice. "Oh, surely you can spare a few minutes. I insist."
Reluctantly, the maid nodded and led Yang Mei into the staff common area. A few other servants were gathered there, preparing for their daily tasks. They fell silent as Yang Mei entered, eyeing her warily.
"Good morning, everyone," Yang Mei said, her voice warm and inviting. "I hope you don’t mind me dropping by. I just wanted to express my gratitude for all your hard work."
The staff exchanged uncertain glances, clearly uncomfortable with this unexpected intrusion into their domain. Yang Mei, undeterred, pressed on.
"I was wondering if any of you work on the upper floors?" she asked, her tone casual but her eyes sharp and calculating. "I’m afraid I haven’t had the chance to explore up there yet, and I’m so curious about my son’s living space."
An older maid, her gray hair pulled back in a severe bun, stepped forward. "Begging your pardon, ma’am, but we’re not at liberty to discuss the family’s private areas."
Yang Mei’s smile tightened almost imperceptibly. "Oh, of course, I understand. I just thought, as Ziyi’s mother, it would be natural for me to know these things. Especially his study - I’d love to see where my brilliant boy does his work."
The older maid’s expression remained impassive. "I’m sorry, ma’am, but Mr. Tang’s study is strictly off-limits. Only a select few of us are permitted to enter for cleaning, and we’re bound by confidentiality agreements."
Frustration flickered in Yang Mei’s eyes, but she quickly masked it. "I see. Well, thank you for your time. I do hope we can become friends during my stay here."
As Yang Mei turned to leave, she overheard a whispered conversation between two younger maids.
"...third floor, that’s where..."
"...only Li and Zhang are allowed..."
Yang Mei’s heart quickened. She had gleaned a crucial piece of information - Tang Ziyi’s study was on the third floor, and only two servants had access to it. It wasn’t much, but it was a start.
Meanwhile, across the sprawling grounds of the Tang estate, Zhao Liang was engaged in his own mission of infiltration. He had risen early, donning workout clothes and setting out for a jog around the property’s perimeter. It wasn’t long before he encountered one of the security guards making his rounds.
"Good morning!" Zhao Liang called out, slowing his pace to fall in step with the guard. "Beautiful day for a run, isn’t it?"
The guard, a stocky man in his thirties, eyed Zhao Liang warily. "Good morning, sir. I hope you’re enjoying the grounds."
Zhao Liang nodded enthusiastically. "Oh, absolutely. The security here is impressive, by the way. I feel so safe knowing you’re all keeping watch."
A hint of pride crept into the guard’s expression. "We take our job very seriously, sir. The Tang family’s safety is our top priority."
"I can see that," Zhao Liang said, his tone admiring. "I used to work in private security myself, you know. Nothing as high-level as this, of course, but I have some experience in the field."
The guard’s interest was piqued. "Is that so? What kind of work did you do?"
Zhao Liang launched into a carefully crafted story, peppered with just enough technical jargon to lend credibility to his claims. As they continued their circuit of the grounds, he steered the conversation towards the villa’s security systems.
"I noticed some state-of-the-art cameras around the property," Zhao Liang remarked casually. "Do you monitor those around the clock?"
The guard hesitated, clearly weighing how much information he should divulge. "We have a dedicated security room," he said finally. "But I’m afraid I can’t discuss the specifics of our protocols."
Zhao Liang nodded understandingly. "Of course, of course. I wouldn’t want to compromise your operations. I was just curious about the setup. In my old line of work, we always found the human element to be crucial. All the technology in the world can’t replace a well-trained team."
The guard relaxed slightly, warming to the topic. "That’s true. We have rotating patrols 24/7, in addition to the electronic surveillance."
"Fascinating," Zhao Liang said, his eyes gleaming with interest. "I’d love to learn more about your methods sometime. Perhaps we could grab a coffee after your shift? I’d be happy to share some of my own experiences in the field."
The guard seemed to consider the offer for a moment before nodding. "I suppose that would be alright. My shift ends at 4 PM."
Zhao Liang’s face split into a wide grin. "Excellent! I look forward to it."
As they parted ways, Zhao Liang’s mind was already racing with possibilities. If he could befriend a few of the guards, he might be able to gather crucial information about the villa’s security vulnerabilities.
Back at the main house, Tang Ziyi sat in his study, his eyes fixed on the bank of monitors before him. He had watched Yang Mei’s interaction with the staff and Zhao Liang’s conversation with the guard with growing concern.
Sun Lixia stood beside him, her expression grim. "They’re moving faster than we anticipated," she remarked.
Tang Ziyi nodded, his jaw clenched. "They’re clever, I’ll give them that. But they’ve underestimated us."
He pressed a button on the intercom. "Ms. Li, could you come to my study please?"
A few moments later, the older maid Yang Mei had spoken to earlier entered the room. "Yes, Mr. Tang?"
"I want to commend you on how you handled the situation with Yang Mei this morning," Tang Ziyi said. "You did well in deflecting her questions without arousing suspicion."
Ms. Li bowed slightly. "Thank you, sir. We’re all aware of the... delicate nature of the current situation."
Tang Ziyi leaned forward, his expression serious. "I need you to brief the rest of the staff. They should continue to be polite but distant with our guests. Any unusual questions or attempts to gain access to restricted areas should be reported to me immediately."
"Understood, sir," Ms. Li replied. "Is there anything else?"
Tang Ziyi hesitated for a moment before continuing. "Yes. I want you to let slip some false information in Yang Mei’s presence. Nothing too obvious, but enough to make her think she’s making progress. Can you handle that?"
A small smile played at the corners of Ms. Li’s mouth. "Of course, Mr. Tang. It would be my pleasure."
As Ms. Li left the study, Sun Lixia turned to Tang Ziyi. "Are you sure about this? Feeding them false information could be risky."
Tang Ziyi’s eyes hardened with determination. "It’s a calculated risk. We need to keep them off balance, make them think they’re succeeding while we gather evidence of their true intentions."
Sun Lixia nodded, though concern still lingered in her eyes. "And what about Zhao Liang’s attempts to befriend the security team?" 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
"I’ve already spoken with the head of security," Tang Ziyi replied. "They’ll play along to an extent, but they won’t reveal anything truly sensitive. In fact, we might be able to use this to our advantage."
As the day wore on, the Tang villa hummed with an undercurrent of tension. Yang Mei and Zhao Liang continued their subtle probing, each interaction carefully calculated to glean more information about the household and its defenses.
In the early afternoon, Yang Mei cornered one of the younger maids she had overheard earlier. "Excuse me," she said, her voice low and conspiratorial. "I couldn’t help but notice earlier that you mentioned something about the third floor. I’m so worried about my son working too hard in his study. Could you tell me more about his workspace up there?"
The maid, who had been briefed by Ms. Li, hesitated for just the right amount of time before responding. "Well, I’m not really supposed to talk about it, but... Mr. Tang does spend a lot of time in his study. It’s at the end of the hall on the third floor, with big windows overlooking the gardens."
Yang Mei’s eyes lit up with triumph. "Oh, thank you so much for telling me. I promise I won’t let anyone know you said anything."
As Yang Mei hurried off to share this information with Zhao Liang, the maid discreetly pressed a button on a device hidden in her pocket, signaling to Tang Ziyi that the false information had been delivered.
Meanwhile, Zhao Liang was engaged in his promised coffee meeting with the security guard. Over steaming cups of espresso, they discussed various aspects of private security work, with Zhao Liang subtly probing for information about the villa’s defenses.
"You know," Zhao Liang said casually, "in my old job, we always found that even the most sophisticated systems had weak points. Usually around shift changes or in areas with poor camera coverage."
The guard, who had been thoroughly briefed on how to handle such inquiries, nodded thoughtfully. "That’s true. We’re always working to improve our protocols. In fact, we recently upgraded our system to address some of those very issues."
Zhao Liang leaned forward, his interest piqued. "Oh? What kind of upgrades, if you don’t mind my asking?"
The guard smiled, seemingly flattered by the attention. "Well, I probably shouldn’t go into too much detail, but let’s just say we’ve significantly enhanced our coverage of the property’s blind spots."
As they continued their conversation, Zhao Liang felt a surge of satisfaction. He was making progress, slowly but surely gathering the information they would need to navigate the villa’s security measures.
What he didn’t realize was that every word of their conversation was being transmitted directly to Tang Ziyi’s study, where it was being carefully analyzed for any signs of Zhao Liang’s true intentions.
As evening fell, Yang Mei and Zhao Liang reconvened in their room, eager to share the fruits of their day’s labor.
"The study is on the third floor, at the end of the hall," Yang Mei reported in a hushed whisper. "And I’ve identified two of the servants who have access to it."
Zhao Liang nodded approvingly. "Excellent work. I’ve made some headway with the security team. It seems they’ve recently upgraded their systems, but I’m confident I can find a way around them given enough time."
Yang Mei’s eyes gleamed with anticipation. "We’re getting closer, my love. Soon, we’ll have everything we’ve ever dreamed of."
As they continued to plot in whispered tones, neither of them noticed the tiny camera hidden in the corner of the room, its lens capturing their every word and gesture.
In his study, Tang Ziyi watched the scene unfold on his monitors, his expression a mixture of disgust and determination. "They’re falling for it," he murmured to Sun Lixia, who stood beside him. "Every piece of false information we’ve fed them, they’ve swallowed whole."
Sun Lixia nodded, her eyes never leaving the screens. "They’re overconfident. That will be their downfall."
Tang Ziyi leaned back in his chair, his mind already racing with the next steps of his plan. "We’ll let them think they’re making progress for a few more days. Then, when they’re at their most confident, we’ll spring the trap."
As night settled over the Tang villa, the various players in this high-stakes game retired to their rooms, each convinced they were one step closer to victory. Yang Mei and Zhao Liang, flush with the success of their day’s scheming, dreamed of the wealth and power that would soon be theirs. Tang Ziyi, surrounded by the evidence of their duplicity, steeled himself for the confrontation to come.
In the quiet darkness, the villa seemed to hold its breath, waiting for the moment when all these carefully laid plans would come to fruition. The game was far from over, and as the first light of dawn began to creep over the horizon, one thing was certain: the coming days would bring revelations and confrontations that would change the lives of everyone involved, forever.
