Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Cavalry’s Debut

The gates of Mold Fortress’s West City swung wide open. Robson took the lead, with over 100 Frank Cavalry and 300 Frank Knight Recruits following close behind.

It had to be said, Claude’s talent was truly heaven-defying. In just a few days, he had managed to turn a group of peasants into recruits.

Nearly 400 cavalrymen streamed out in a mighty torrent.

As the last cavalryman galloped through the gate, the great doors slowly closed. Through the crack, one could glimpse the Frank Skilled Infantry in full armor, their silver plating gleaming. Robson had specially assigned them to guard the gate.

The earth-shattering noise from West City naturally reached the ears of the Beastmen.

At this moment, Chief Suoli’s face turned deathly pale as he watched the cavalry pour out from West City.

’How are there more?’

After receiving his orders, Chief Suoli had instinctively assumed that the enemy’s main force was at North City. After all, a fortress usually only had a single Cavalry Team; a Knight Order required a much larger fortress.

’The enemy had laid low in West City for so long without making a move. Why were they all charging out now?’

Chief Suoli had no time to dwell on these thoughts. Looking at the straggling troops behind him, he realized things were going south fast.

Across the entire world, the combat strength of the various races was judged in many ways.

But no matter which combat evaluation system one used, their goblins were always at the bottom.

Goblins were the archetypal "three-no" army: no fighting prowess, no organization, and no discipline. Their only advantage was their numbers.

These shortcomings weren’t obvious during the earlier stages of the siege. After all, everyone just had to follow the person in front of them.

But in an open field battle like this, especially against cavalry, these weaknesses were suddenly magnified infinitely.

Due to the goblins’ lack of organization and discipline, their marching speed was entirely down to the individual.

The elite ran the fastest at the head of the column, while the others straggled behind.

Now, the entire flank of the goblin force was completely exposed to Robson’s cavalry.

A long, thin formation with an exposed flank like this was practically a gift for cavalry.

"Fall back and reinforce! Fall back!" Chief Suoli roared, his voice amplified by battle aura.

For a moment, Chief Suoli didn’t know what to do. His limited intellect was usually preoccupied with petty internal army affairs.

Faced with this situation, all he could do was hastily order his elite troops to turn back.

It would have been better if they hadn’t. The moment they turned, the already chaotic goblin formation descended into even greater disarray...

....

"For the Lord! For the Lord of Dawn!"

Different statuses meant different war cries. A common soldier only needed to be responsible to the one he had sworn allegiance to.

"For the King!"

Robson and Claude led the charge at the very front of the Knight formation, plunging into the center of the goblin army.

Although Robson’s forces were mostly Knight Recruits, it also depended on who the enemy was.

If they were facing the Werewolf Corps from North City, Robson would most likely be toast.

Even escaping wouldn’t be easy. The howls of werewolves dealt a massive blow to enemy morale.

But the current enemy was a group of utterly incompetent goblins whose combat strength was even lower than that of peasants. And no matter how green his recruits were, they were still soldiers!

The difference in combat power between the two sides was like that of an infant and an adult. The entire cavalry formation sliced through the goblin army like a sharp knife.

The only sound on the battlefield was the endless wailing of goblins.

"DING! A Frank Knight Recruit has successfully killed a goblin slave. +50 experience."

"DING! A Frank Knight Recruit has successfully killed a Goblin Warrior. +100 experience."

"DING!..."

After successfully punching through the goblin army, the system prompts rang endlessly in Robson’s mind. Just as he had predicted, this was a one-sided slaughter!

The cavalry squadron rode for a good while, creating some distance, before Robson ordered them to turn around and attack again.

They were Knight Recruits, after all; he couldn’t ask for too much. If he gave them too little time to react and they broke formation, Robson would want to cry but have no tears.

After all, even though his cavalry was on a completely different level from these goblins, they couldn’t withstand their sheer numbers!

Once it devolved into a chaotic melee, the endless stream of goblins could wear down and kill his cavalry through sheer attrition.

After they successfully turned, Robson had been wondering if he should quit while he was ahead and retreat, but the scene before him left him dumbfounded.

Chief Suoli ordering the elites at the front to turn back should have been a good thing.

But he had still underestimated the goblins’ level of utter trashiness.

During Robson’s charge, the soldiers in the middle had fled for their lives by scattering to the sides. This directly obstructed the goblin elites’ attempt to reinforce, splitting the entire goblin army in two.

"To the southwest! For Frank!" Robson roared, his voice amplified by battle aura.

"Charge!" Claude bellowed in response.

"For the Kingdom!"

And so, the several hundred cavalrymen charged once more, this time toward the goblin’s rear guard.

The goblins had basically no discipline. Their elites were all placed at the head of the formation, so the army’s strength decreased from front to back. The rear guard consisted mostly of the old, weak, sick, and disabled who couldn’t keep up.

And he, Robson, was here to slaughter the old, weak, sick, and disabled!

War against other races had no room for concepts like benevolence and morality. The knightly code was not meant for them.

Who knows how many humans these so-called "old, weak, sick, and disabled" had ravaged in the past.

Besides, every single one of his, Robson’s, cavalrymen had a limitless future ahead of them. This was all he had to his name; he couldn’t afford any losses.

Robson’s cavalry squadron had already wreaked havoc in the goblin center. Against the rear guard, who could barely even walk, it was like slicing melons and chopping vegetables.

Green text constantly flooded his vision, and the system prompts came so fast that Robson couldn’t even keep up.

....

"Damn it! Damn it!" Chief Suoli trembled with rage as he watched his army fall into chaos.

There were about ten thousand goblins in total at West City. Most had not yet set out, but there were still three or four thousand of them outside.

But three or four thousand was useless. Goblins were inherently weak, had no semblance of a formation on the battlefield, and their flanks were completely exposed to the cavalry’s line of sight. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

In the face of a sizable cavalry force, any one of these flaws would be fatal. As luck would have it, this bunch of goblins had managed to collect them all.

Chief Suoli knew that panicking was useless, but for the moment, he couldn’t think of a single solution. The infantry formation was in complete disarray; all they could do was be hunted down.

Suddenly, the thundering of hooves came from Chief Suoli’s east.

’What’s going on? There’s more?!’

Suoli was already like a bird startled by the twang of a bowstring. Seeing the dust rising in the east, he subconsciously assumed he had been tricked.

"Chieftain! It’s the Wolf Cavalry! They’re our men!"

Fortunately, there were some sharp-eyed individuals among the goblins. Chief Suoli looked closely and saw that it was indeed the Wolf Cavalry.

No, that wasn’t right. It wasn’t just Wolf Cavalry. In front of the hundreds of Wolf Cavalry were dozens of human cavalrymen riding hard.

"It’s the routed human army! Quick, stop them!" Chief Suoli hurriedly ordered.

’As long as I stop them! I can redeem myself! I can turn this disaster around!’
