That was why, no matter how busy he was, he would always be there himself when Ian was sick.

Stella Shields said, "It’s alright. I’m not busy anyway, so I can stay here with Ian. I don’t know what Anne Sutton said to him to make him hate me so much."

Nathan Fawcett glanced at Ian, then back at Stella Shields. "Is it possible that Ian just doesn’t like you? Besides, what did you just ask him to call you? ’Mom’?"

Stella Shields: "..."

Feeling a pang of guilt, she said, "No. It’s just... didn’t Ian always think I was his mother before?"

Nathan Fawcett warned, "Don’t say things like that anymore. It’ll cause misunderstandings."

Stella Shields glanced at him. Seeing his serious expression, she asked tentatively, "Are you afraid Anne Sutton will get the wrong idea?"

"..." Nathan Fawcett didn’t explain.

Stella Shields said, "After everything she’s done, you can’t possibly still want to be with her, can you? She isn’t afraid of you misunderstanding her relationship with Charles Prescott, yet you’re afraid of her thinking we have a child together?"

Nathan Fawcett glanced at Stella Shields and said, "This has nothing to do with Anne Sutton. I just don’t want anyone to misunderstand our relationship. The person you like is Ethan, and I trust you don’t want others to get the wrong idea about us either."

Stella Shields’s hands clenched tightly. She looked at Nathan Fawcett, knowing he saw Ethan Linden as a younger brother.

She had always thought herself quite lucky.

Nathan Fawcett had no women in his life, but because she was the one Ethan Linden liked, she was the exception. She could get close to Nathan Fawcett, and he would be good to her. He would even easily give her resources that others couldn’t obtain.

In his eyes, she was special.

Yet, in this moment, Stella Shields finally realized she was actually the person furthest from him.

Because she was the one Ethan Linden liked, he had absolutely no romantic interest in her.

He could like anyone else, but he would never, ever like her.

The feeling was so painful it felt like her heart was breaking.

She turned and walked straight out of the hospital room.

Seeing her leave, Ian breathed a sigh of relief.

Nathan Fawcett looked at his son’s relieved expression and asked, "What’s wrong? Didn’t you use to like her a lot? Why do you hate her so much now?"

Ian said, "Dad, is she really my mom?"

"Of course not," Nathan Fawcett said. "Haven’t I told you before? She’s not your mom."

"Really?" Ian looked at Nathan Fawcett doubtfully.

Nathan Fawcett said, "What, you don’t even believe my word anymore?"

"But she said she’s my mom! And she told me not to be with Anne anymore! Every time I talk to Anne, she gets mad. Dad, please don’t make me be alone with her again, okay? If you don’t have time, you can ask Anne to come stay with me! She’s really nice to me."

Nathan Fawcett looked at his adorable son and said, "Alright."

’I didn’t expect him to like Anne Sutton this much.’

As for Stella Shields...

He had originally thought that, with all her sweet talk, it wouldn’t be hard for her to look after Ian for a bit.

But he never expected to get this kind of review from Ian.

Ian asked, "So when are we bringing Anne home? You just made her angry. Does this mean she won’t come to see me later?"

Ian was very worried.

He and Anne were getting along just fine, but with his dad as an obstacle who was always making Anne angry, she wouldn’t want to visit him anymore.

Nathan Fawcett looked at Ian, not quite knowing how to explain the situation to his son.

’I was clearly the one who was angry.’

’And now, for my son’s sake, I have to go and suck up to Anne Sutton?’

Nathan Fawcett looked at Ian and said, "Anne is very busy right now. She has to be with another man."

Hearing Nathan Fawcett’s words, Ian asked, "Are you talking about Leo’s dad?"

The corner of Nathan Fawcett’s mouth twitched. He realized his son knew everything.

He said, "Yes."

"No way!" Ian said. "Anne hates him! He’s a big bad guy. He even tried to kick me and Anne out before. Anne doesn’t like him at all. Dad, you must have misunderstood."

Seeing how serious his son was, Nathan Fawcett reached out and ruffled his hair. "Are you still feeling sick?"

Ian said, "I’m not feeling sick. Anne said that when I get better, she’s going to make me delicious food."

Nathan Fawcett said, "Alright, you get some sleep first. Get better quickly, and I’ll call her over to make you that delicious food."

"Okay."

...

That afternoon, after finishing work and getting ready to go home, Anne Sutton finally remembered Ian. She had wanted to visit him, but then she recalled that his parents were there, and her presence would probably be unwelcome. So, she dismissed the idea of going to see him.

She reached the garage and had just gotten into her car when she saw a message from Nathan Fawcett: "Come see Ian!"

’It’s like this man has a tracker on me. How does he even know I’m getting off work right now?’

"I have plans tonight."

Anne Sutton lied.

Nathan Fawcett replied, "Don’t make me come and get you."

"..."

His tone was domineering. Even through the phone, Anne Sutton could practically see his ice-cold expression. Resigned, she got out of her car and went upstairs.

When she reached the door to the hospital room, she found it was closed, and there was no sound from within. Anne Sutton hesitated for a moment, but a cool voice suddenly spoke from behind her. "Why aren’t you going in? Afraid I’ll eat you?"

Anne Sutton looked up and saw Nathan Fawcett standing right in front of her.

He was wearing a black suit and had long legs.

She said, "I was afraid of interrupting you all. Why did you ask me to come?"

"You were the one who promised to cook for Ian. What, did you forget?" Nathan Fawcett glanced at her. "You sneak over to see him, and now you want to back out?"

He stared at Anne Sutton, recalling what Ian had told him—that Anne Sutton hated Charles Prescott and wouldn’t be with him.

Even though it was just a child’s words, he had actually taken them seriously.

Looking at her now, he found he wasn’t as angry anymore, at least for the moment.

Anne Sutton said, "I can cook for Ian, but... Ms. Shields isn’t in there, is she?"

Seeing her timid appearance, Nathan Fawcett said, "What, is she going to eat you?"

"She won’t eat me, but she’ll call me a homewrecker and say I stole you from her. She’ll say I’m trying to steal her child! You clearly told me before that Ian isn’t her child, so why is this happening? Why did you lie to me?"

Hearing this, the corner of Nathan Fawcett’s mouth twitched.

’Something like that happened?’

’How come I didn’t know?’

He stared at Anne Sutton and said, "Is that why you went and got involved with Charles Prescott?"

’She was acting so strangely that morning.’

’So it was because of this?’

Anne Sutton said, "What are you talking about? When have I ever been involved with Charles Prescott? What you saw that day was a complete misunderstanding. He just showed up out of nowhere, I have no idea what got into him. He came to me asking me to plead his case with you because he didn’t want to move out of the Fawcett Family estate."

The moment the words left her mouth, Anne Sutton wanted to take them back, but it was already too late!

’Damn it!’

’Why am I explaining anything to this scumbag?’
