Monstrous Allure: Reborn as the Abyss Empress
Chapter 26 — THE STONEHIDE CHALLENGE
The western gates of the Abyssal Nest stood open.
Waiting beyond them were twelve towering figures.
Each stood over eight feet tall, their muscular frames covered in weathered leather and iron armor. Massive horns curved from their heads, decorated with stone rings that marked years of battle.
At their center stood a giant even larger than the rest.
A stone warhammer rested across his shoulders.
The System activated.

Vespera descended the steps of the council hall.
She remained in her human form.
A flowing black cloak concealed most of her royal attire, while the obsidian horns rising from her hair hinted at her true nature.
Kragga walked beside her.
"You're staying human?"
Vespera smiled.
"I'd rather they meet their queen before they meet the monster."
Gorvak's deep voice echoed across the courtyard.
"So..."
"The Abyss Queen truly exists."
His amber eyes examined her carefully.
Then he frowned.
"You look..."
"...small."
Kragga burst into laughter.
"I said the exact same thing."
Vespera folded her arms.
"And yet you're both still standing."
Several minotaurs chuckled.
Even Gorvak's stern expression softened.
Perhaps this queen wasn't what he'd expected.
"I am Gorvak."
"Chief of the Stonehide."
"I've come because rumors spread quickly."
He glanced around the Nest.
"They say monsters live together here."
"They do."
"They say humans are welcome."
"They are."
"They say an orc follows a snake queen."
Kragga growled.
"I follow no one."
"I stand beside her."
Gorvak nodded once.
"A better answer."
Without warning, Gorvak raised his warhammer.
The courtyard tensed.
"I do not come to declare war."
"I come to test."
He slammed the hammer into the stone.
The impact cracked the ancient courtyard.
"My clan follows only leaders proven through trial."
"What kind of trial?" Vespera asked.
"The Trial of Pillars."
Lirael whispered quietly.
"I've read about this."
"It's an old minotaur tradition."
"No killing."
"No armies."
"Only endurance."
The Stonehide warriors carried four enormous granite pillars into the courtyard.
Each weighed several tons.
Gorvak pointed toward them.
"One leader."
"One challenger."
"The winner is whoever carries all four pillars across the arena."
Kragga blinked.
"That's your idea of diplomacy?"
"It saves time."
The goblins gathered atop nearby balconies.
Children climbed onto the shoulders of ogres for a better view.
Even Sylvana watched with quiet curiosity.
Vespera stepped into the arena.
Still in her human form.
Gorvak frowned.
"You're not transforming?"
"I don't need to."
The minotaur laughed.
"We'll see."
The trial began.
Gorvak effortlessly lifted the first granite pillar onto one shoulder.
The crowd roared.
Vespera approached her own pillar.
Instead of matching him with brute force...
She crouched.
Placed both hands beneath the stone.
Focused.
The System appeared.

Dark violet energy flowed beneath her skin.
The pillar rose.
Slowly.
Steadily.
The spectators erupted into applause.
The first pillar crossed the arena.
Then the second.
By the third...
Even Gorvak's breathing had become heavy.
Vespera was exhausted.
Sweat ran down her face.
Her human body had reached its limit.
Gorvak noticed.
"You'll collapse."
"Probably."
She smiled.
"But not yet."
The final pillars remained.
Each leader reached for the last one.
Gorvak lifted first.
Vespera tried.
The stone barely moved.
Her muscles trembled.
The System flashed.

Vespera closed her eyes.
"So..."
"That's why I have two forms."
Dark mist swirled around her.
The audience watched in stunned silence as her human form dissolved into shimmering darkness.
Black scales spread across her body.
Her serpentine tail unfurled across the arena.
Golden eyes burned with Abyssal power.
The massive pillar rose effortlessly.
The transformation wasn't about abandoning her humanity.
It was about embracing every part of herself.
Together...
The two leaders carried the final pillars.
Neither yielded.
Neither stumbled.
They reached the finish line at almost exactly the same moment.
Silence followed.
Then Gorvak laughed.
A booming, genuine laugh.
"I haven't enjoyed a challenge like that in years!"
He extended his massive hand.
"I came looking for a conqueror."
"I found a queen."
Vespera accepted the handshake.
"I came looking for allies."
"Perhaps we both succeeded."
The Stonehide warriors struck their chests in unison.
One by one, they knelt—not in submission, but in respect.
Gorvak spoke for them all.
"The Stonehide Clan accepts the invitation to your Grand Council."
The System chimed.

That evening, the Nest celebrated its newest allies.
Music echoed through the halls.
Different races shared food and stories.
Old enemies laughed together.
But beneath the festivities...
Darius stood alone upon the highest tower.
His gaze remained fixed on the distant eastern horizon.
Black smoke rose far beyond the mountains.
Someone else was gathering armies.
And unlike Vespera...
They had no interest in peace.
