Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride
Chapter 1264 - 1259: The Self-Righteous Man
As Sophia Hamilton’s words fell, the surrounding air suddenly dropped.
Staring intently at Sophia Hamilton’s unfeeling little face, Evander Lancaster’s eyes narrowed and then widened, his thin lips pressed tightly together.
Suddenly, he turned and walked towards the end of the corridor.
His steps were large, with no intention of staying.
Through the figures of the medical staff, Sophia saw the man press the elevator open button and then enter. Even from afar, she clearly saw his cold demeanor.
Taking a breath, Sophia withdrew her gaze and looked upwards; the hospital corridor walls were plain and colorless white, just like her current mood, like the lake in the cold winter, unknowingly slowly freezing over.
The medical staff escorted Sophia into the ward, hung up the saline, instructed some precautions, and as they were leaving, Sophia asked to borrow her phone.
"Could I borrow your phone? I’d like to call my family."
The medical staff retrieved the phone from the pocket of their white coat and handed it to Sophia. After receiving it, Sophia dialed her mother’s number, "Mom, just to let you know, I’ll be working overtime tonight, staying up all night, so I’m not going home. You should rest early."
Listening to Sophia’s call, the medical staff clearly sighed, standing by the bedside with both hands tucked in the white coat’s pockets.
After Sophia returned the phone and thanked her, the medical staff stored the phone properly and said, "This kind of scumbag is just not worth forgiving!"
Sophia looked young, like a university student who hadn’t graduated yet. The apparent falling out with Evander was perceived by the medical staff as the naive young girl encountering an irresponsible scumbag, hence the indignant outburst.
Sophia forced a small smile and said nothing.
After the medical staff left the ward, she clearly sighed, closed her eyes, and leaned against the bed, her needle-free hand resting on her lower abdomen, which was still terribly cold.
After a while, the door to the ward was pushed open from the outside, and Sophia abruptly opened her eyes, seeing the medical staff bring in two plastic bags containing her soft cloth boots, trench coat, and shorts. She nodded politely and smiled, saying "Thanks a lot."
"It’s nothing," the medical staff placed the two bags on the cabinet, advised before leaving, "In the future, can’t wear so little for beauty’s sake, your health is more important."
"I understand, thank you." Sophia thanked them again.
After the medical staff left, she breathed out again and continued to close her eyes, leaning against the bed.
Whether it was due to fewer gynecology patients or a shortage of regular rooms, staying alone in a VIP room suddenly felt much colder.
The phone should have been left at the apartment; she remembered it seemed to be on the cabinet by the door.
At this moment, Sophia only blamed herself for usually being too dull, her direct personality not smooth enough, not having made any close friends even after working for so many years, now lying on the hospital bed alone in solitude.
If her phone were here, she could play games to pass the time.
A weak body tends to get sleepy easily. With the saline drip flowing, Sophia leaned against the bed and drifted off into a fuzzy sleep, unaware that the water in the plastic bag was already at its bottom, and the medicine in the IV tube was about to run dry.
The door to the ward was pushed open again, and Evander entered carrying several shopping bags.
A man in the medical profession, upon entering the ward, first noticed the IV bottle hanging above the bed, seeing the medicine inside was already exhausted, he hurriedly placed the shopping bags aside and quickly came over to fold the IV tube.
One hand pressed the wall alarm, and shortly after, the nurse just coming on duty stepped in, asking, "What is it?"
"What is it? How do you medical staff work? Leaving a patient alone in a ward, aren’t you worried about accidents!" Evander queried sternly, his face displeased.
Confounded by the reprimand, the nurse paused at the door to the ward, daring not to proceed further, hands in white coat pockets, face puzzled, "Aren’t you her family?"
"If I’m family, does that mean I can’t go out to buy things? You medical staff, earning high salaries yet not taking your work seriously, does your attitude align with your initial vow, with your patients!"
Evander spoke confidently and righteously, fortunate to have returned in time, Sophia’s blood only flowed back into the IV tube a little, not causing too much risk.
Seeing the nurse still at the door, he raised the folded IV tube for her to see, "The medicine has been infused completely, don’t the medical staff know to replace it?"
The nurse...
Licked her lips, approached, and glanced at the patient card hanging at the bed’s end, puzzled as she muttered to herself, "That’s right, just one bottle,"
Evander...
Realized his reaction was a bit excessive, yet his woman just experienced another danger, and he wouldn’t forgive these unprincipled medical staff, lowered his gaze and removed the needle from Sophia’s hand, impatiently saying, "Leave, it’s not your concern anymore, be more careful next time!"
The nurse, before turning away, picked up the patient card again, checked it, scratching her head in puzzle as she walked out pocketing one hand, scratching her forehead with the other, baffled.
Sophia slept deeply; pregnant women are prone to sleepiness, especially when physically weak.
Her face was practically bloodless, lips also an unhealthy pale white.
Propping up the pillow with the patient card, Evander turned to the cabinet, unpacking the items from the shopping bags.
Sanitary pads for women, needed since the child is gone.
Skimmed milk, vitamin tablets, and some blood-boosting supplements.
Organized everything into the cabinet; when he rose, noticing the two plastic bags atop, frowned in confusion.
Sitting in the chair, curiously opened them, finding inside the thin soft cloth thigh-high boots, shorts, trench coat, his handsome face immediately chilled again.
This dead woman, he had advised many times, pregnant women must keep warm, did she think vanity was more important than their baby!
Thinking of their unborn child, Evander slumped into the chair, knowing smoking was not allowed in the ward, yet still retrieved a cigarette pack from his pocket.
Entered the bathroom, leaned against the wall, took a drag from the cigarette, slowly exhaled the smoke, his slightly closed eyes seemed dazed.
At thirty-one, it’s not very old for a man, yet it is the age to settle down and start a family.
The arrival of the baby had him too excited to sleep well for several nights, but sadly, one by one, they were lost.
Took another drag, exhaling the smoke accompanied by a long sigh.
The baby is gone; even if he were to tear the wretched woman apart, nothing would bring them back, just have to wait until her body recovers before trying again.
Sophia gradually awakened, turned to look at the window, trying to discern the time, realizing the curtains were drawn at some point.
Raised a hand to rub her forehead, then discovered, the needle from her hand had been removed.
She smiled self-mockingly, seems the VIP ward service is indeed much better than regular wards, the medical staff service is so attentive.
The lower abdomen felt a bit bloated, needing to relieve herself, prodded her body out of bed and walked towards the bathroom.
