My Wife Is The Author?
Chapter 8: A Star
Charles emerged from the red dragon’s skull covered in blood and viscera.
He had just spent his time ripping apart the soft brain of the creature until his system notified him that it had been slain.
A great surge of energy entered his body then. He knew that this was the creature’s essence.
It was a lot to take in. After all, this dragon was Master Grade.
In the story of Fourth Apocalypse, the main character Romeo was only an Elite Grade, which was an entire rank below Master.
Charles sat down in a cross-legged position and focused on absorbing the Master Essence.
After five minutes, he was sweating profusely, but he had done it.
The essence had been successfully integrated into his body.
「Calculating Rewards...」
...
[Red Dragon Spirit]
[Master Essence Absorbed]
﹂[Wounds Healed | Grade Progress Earned]
[New Spell Acquired]
﹂[Read Ahead]
[New Spell Acquired]
﹂[Dragon’s Roar]
[New Technique Acquired]
﹂[Dragonic Breathing]
...
"Phew..."
After seeing all of his rewards, Charles let out a sigh of relief.
He knew that the system relied heavily on luck. There was a chance that he wouldn’t get any rewards for the dragon and would return mostly empty-handed.
It seemed that wasn’t the case.
Charles went through his rewards one by one, starting with the Red Dragon Spirit.
This item could be used to strengthen spells and techniques in the dragon domain if one wished to consume it.
It could increase the grade of a skill or speed up mastery of a newly acquired technique. However, they would risk facing mutations when consuming it if not done under the correct circumstances.
Items like this were kept inside your body and could be drawn out at will, similar to an inventory.
Charles left it there for now and turned to the next reward, the Master Essence.
This had already been absorbed, which had already brought him close to breaking through the first-grade Novice rank and reaching the second grade.
It had also healed the wound he had suffered on his arm and helped get rid of the tiredness he felt.
Next was his new spell, Read Ahead.
This spell allowed him to have an intuition towards attacks that would come in the near future, specifically three seconds ahead.
It was a Master Grade spell, which was weaker than his Supreme spell, Editor’s Authority, but still far stronger than anything a Novice should have.
This was because it was a spell directly linked to his Editor class, which he already knew was overpowered.
Finally, he had acquired a new Veteran spell, Dragon’s Roar, and a Veteran technique called Dragonic Breathing.
This presented two problems to him.
Both of these abilities were outside of the Editor domain and belonged to the Dragon class domain.
Without a Dragon class or subclass, he would be unable to use these spells without risking a mutation.
Dragonic Breathing was a technique that would allow him to use the spell Dragon’s Roar without having the class; however, it would not help him avoid the mutations.
That gave him three options.
Slay more dragons in hopes of being offered a Dragon subclass.
Use the spells and techniques whilst accepting the risks.
Or discard both of them from his system.
This was something that could be done simply with a thought.
Charles scratched at his chin in thought.
I’ll leave them there for now and worry about them later... Right now, my focus should be bringing this eye back to Charlotte.
When he entered the dragon’s skull, he had already taken its eye.
「Red Dragon’s Eye」
Since this was known as a magical item, it could also be kept within his body and withdrawn at any time with the help of his system.
As he watched the slimy, large object disappear, he suddenly felt his weight increase very slightly.
I see... So I have to be mindful of which objects I place inside my body as well.
Even as a reader, there’s so much to remember in this world.
Now that he was done with the 98th floor, Charles prepared to head back to the 99th and make his way towards Charlotte’s room.
However, at that moment, a strange ethereal portal appeared in front of him. It was white with black swirls in it, resembling a galaxy.
He recognised these portals. They appeared after clearing a floor and would return you to your starting point.
This gave adventurers the opportunity to instantly head back to the entrance instead of having to climb down each floor.
Charles rubbed at his chin in thought.
Since my starting point was at the top of the tower, wouldn’t it make sense for this portal to take me there?
Even if it doesn’t, there’s a five-second period in which I can return. This was a system created by FluffyCat for characters in the novel who might have exited by mistake.
So, Charles stepped through.
...
Immediately, he emerged from the other side and found himself standing on the 100th floor by the window that overlooked the entire Elurion City.
He let out a deep sigh as the portal vanished behind him.
Good... It worked.
Then he looked down at Charlotte. The white-haired beauty was fast asleep.
She didn’t look as weak as she previously had. Her skin had colour to it, and her features were no longer dry and cracked.
Charles found himself staring at her for a few seconds. He was taking in her appearance.
Even her eyelashes are white... I’ve never seen anything like it before.
She’s...
His thoughts were suddenly cut off as Charlotte’s silver eyes slowly opened.
She looked up at Charles, who was looking at her closely.
Charles guiltily stepped back. He felt like he had been caught doing something weird.
"You’re awake..." he said, scratching his head. "I brought you one of the items from the list. The Red Dragon’s Eye."
A warm smile spread across Charlotte’s face as she gradually pushed herself to a slightly seated position.
"You are a star, thank you," she said.
