Chapter 44: I Brought Maren Into The Fire And She Brought The Fire Into Me

Soren found Maren in the east corridor at half past midnight.

She was walking with her jacket off and her ears out because nobody used this wing after curfew.

"Stop hiding from Joan," Soren said. "Stop hiding from the auditor and stop hiding from me."

Maren turned around. "I’m not hiding!"

"You’ve been in your room since the training yard, You ate dinner alone... Come with me."

He didn’t wait for her answer.

He walked toward the stairwell that led to the roof access.

After four seconds he heard her footsteps behind him.

◆◆◆◆

The roof was empty.

Clear sky, no wind, the kind of night where the air sat warm.

Maren leaned against the metal railing and her hands left marks on it immediately, the paint bubbling where her palms pressed down.

"The auditor saw it," Maren said. "The readout lasted four seconds. She knows what I am."

"Dani scrambled the recording."

"She still saw it with her own eyes." Maren’s grip tightened on the railing and the metal underneath started to glow dull orange.

"When they classify me, I become property. That’s what happens to unregistered fused entities. The Bureau Containment Protocol is seventy years old. They wrote it after the first Ember Kitsune showed up in Busan in 1956 and the Korean tamer corps cut it open to study the fusion process."

She said that last part without blinking.

"They cut it open?"

"The host was still alive."

"Maren."

"They wanted to know how a beast could survive inside a human body at Tier 4 without killing the host. The answer was it couldn’t, not for long. The kitsune kept the girl’s organs running with foxfire for eleven months before the Bureau shut the lab down."

She was looking at the skyline. "That’s what happens when they find us."

Her hands were warping the railing now. The metal sagged under her palms.

Soren reached out and grabbed both her hands.

The heat was immediate.

His skin went red in the first second and his nerves screamed at him to let go. He closed his fingers around hers and held on.

Maren tried to pull away. "You’re burning."

"I know."

"Let go."

"No."

She pulled harder but he didn’t move.

The pain climbed past anything reasonable, past the threshold where his body should have overridden his decision, but his hands stayed closed because he’d done this before in the Fracture chamber when Maren’s fire had stabilized his core temperature and he knew what came after the pain.

After the pain came the frequency match.

She stopped pulling.

Her breathing changed, faster at first, then slower as the fire found somewhere else to go.

It routed through his hands into the Primordial Heart.

The Heart opened a channel the way it had opened channels for Yara’s shadow and Selah’s frost, because that’s what the Heart did when someone stopped hiding.

His hands went from red to white then numb.

Maren looked at their joined hands. "Why are you doing this?"

"Because you keep running and I’m tired of watching you run."

"I’m dangerous."

"Everyone I care about is dangerous, that stopped being a factor a long time ago."

She was quiet for a while.

Her fire kept flowing through him, slower now, controlled by something other than technique.

She was letting it through because she wanted to, not because the system told her to.

"The Western Continental Fracture," she said. "You know the facts."

"Thirty-two casualties in a tier-5 event. "

"The girl who died, the human Maren." She was looking at their hands.

Her foxfire tears started falling, burning tiny holes in the concrete where they landed. "She was at a field school when the Fracture opened and the evacuation route collapsed, I was her bonded beast."

Soren didn’t let go.

"She was still warm.. even dead, she was warm and i was a kitsune barely Tier 2, too young, not strong enough to fight through a Tier-5 event... I needed a body and she was the only one close enough and I thought if I could just hold on to her warmth for a few more minutes I could survive." More tears. "But I held on too long and I grew into her bones by the time the Bureau found us, there was no separating the spirit from the host."

"You kept her alive."

"I kept myself alive! she was already gone. I just wore her body because I was too scared to—"

"Maren! Look at me."

He pulled her in.

One arm around her back, the other hand still holding hers, and her face went against his chest.

She was burning hot and his shirt started to smoke where her cheek pressed into it.

Soren held on.

The fire routed through him and the Heart aligned the frequency without a system command because the Heart didn’t prescribe connection.

It responded to it.

[DING! — Bond alignment detected: Maren Cole. Obsession: 39 → 35/60. E-rank scaling active. Soul integrity: 62% → 64%.]

The numbers went down because the cap went up, that meant more room to breathe. The alignment gave back more than it took, the same way it had with Selah.

[DING! — New ability unlocked: Cauterize. Sealing wounds and dimensional tears with controlled flame. Origin: voluntary fire-bonding through sustained physical contact.]

[DING! — Lore fragment: The Western Continental Fracture origin signature matches the academy Fracture Seed. Same source. The Author is building a network.]

Maren pulled back enough to look at his hands. The skin from his fingertips to his forearms was raw and red.

Some of it was already blistering.

"You held on..." she said.

"Yeah."

"Why?"

"Because someone should have held on for you a long time ago but nobody did."

Her tail wrapped around his waist.

She pressed her forehead back against his chest and the fire between them burned.

Two Fractures from the same source.

One killed thirty-two people and gave a Kitsune a human body.

One was sitting under this academy with three days left on its seal.

The Author was building something. Soren could feel it through Script Sight, Fracture lines connecting across the continent in a pattern he couldn’t see the edges of yet.

He held Maren on the roof while looking at the sky and his forearms hurt all the way to the bone.
