Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God
Chapter 181: RETURN TO EARTH
RETURN TO EARTH - 12:45 AM
Orion appeared above Earth’s atmosphere twelve minutes after leaving Jupiter, having crossed 600 million kilometers in the time it took to have a casual conversation, and he felt incredible—energized rather than exhausted, exhilarated rather than depleted, ready for more despite having just casually traveled across the solar system and bisected a moon.
"That felt good," he said with a wide smile that nobody could see but he could feel stretching across his face, "really good—I haven’t felt this alive since before cultivation started, before I locked myself in chambers for weeks—just flying through space at impossible speeds, testing abilities that break physics, being completely free of constraints or limitations."
He descended through Earth’s atmosphere at controlled speeds this time, enjoying the sensation of air resistance as friction heated his skin to temperatures that would vaporize spacecraft but merely felt warm to his conceptual-energy-enhanced body, and landed gently in the underground facility through the still-open hatch.
Rene was waiting with her laboratory body, and if robots could look impressed she would have been showing it.
"Twelve-minute round trip to Jupiter," she said with something approaching awe, "casual bisection of a fifty-kilometer moon with spatial manipulation, successful demonstration of personal warp capability, and zero signs of energy depletion—Orion, you’re not just planetary-level, you’re approaching capabilities usually associated with stellar-level cultivators."
"The thirteen concepts make that much difference?" Orion asked, settling back into the cultivation chamber that now seemed almost quaint compared to the vastness of space he’d just experienced.
"Apparently yes," Rene confirmed, "the System assessment that you achieved top 0.1% foundation grade wasn’t exaggeration—most planetary cultivators embody three to five concepts, you’ve integrated thirteen, and that quantitative difference created qualitative leap in capability that puts you far ahead of normal First Gene Lock completion."
"Then I’ll use it responsibly," Orion said seriously, the euphoria of his flight fading into sober recognition of what he could do, "because if I can bisect moons casually and potentially destroy Earth with full-power strikes, then I need to be extremely careful about when and how I use this strength—one mistake, one moment of lost control, and I could kill billions of people or damage the planet irreparably."
"Agreed," Rene said, "which is why I recommend you spend time consolidating these capabilities, training control at this new power level, and establishing protocols for safe use before attempting any further advancement—you need to master what you have before adding more."
"Starting tomorrow with family cultivation sessions," Orion confirmed, "teaching Cassia and Nyla helps me understand my own techniques better, and having them cultivating alongside me will keep me grounded in human connections rather than becoming so focused on power that I lose perspective."
He headed upstairs to join his family, moving at normal human walking speed despite being capable of crossing continents in seconds, because sometimes the journey mattered more than the destination and he needed the time to process what he’d achieved.
First Gene Lock was complete.
Planetary power was real.
And the responsibility of that power was absolute.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION - 11:45 PM
A notification appeared in Orion’s vision, the System interface activating with message that felt significant:
DING
ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: FIRST GENE LOCK COMPLETION
Congratulations, Host Orion. You have successfully completed the First Gene Lock through embodiment of thirteen fundamental concepts—far exceeding minimum requirements and establishing exceptional foundation for future advancement.
Analysis of conceptual embodiment: Fire, Water, Wind, Lightning, Wood/Nature, Earth, Metal, Gravity, Life, Death, Sun, Moon, Space (partial). Comprehensive elemental coverage plus fundamental forces and cosmic principles indicates extraordinary comprehension capability.
Cultivation foundation assessment: EXCEPTIONAL GRADE (top 0.1% of all First Gene Lock cultivators across known civilizations)
Reward: Tier 3 Technology Library Access Unlocked
The notification expanded showing new knowledge flooding into his System library:
TIER 3 TECHNOLOGIES NOW ACCESSIBLE:
Advanced Stellar Engineering (Dyson sphere construction, star lifting, stellar manipulation) Consciousness Digitization and Transfer (true mind uploading, digital immortality) Dimensional Physics Applications (pocket dimensions, spatial manipulation, interdimensional travel) Exotic Matter Creation (negative mass generation, exotic particles, quantum foam manipulation) Planetary Terraforming (complete biosphere creation, atmospheric engineering, geological reformation) Type II Civilization Infrastructure (interstellar colonization, galaxy-spanning networks) Advanced Genetic Engineering (designer species, consciousness modification, biological transcendence) Wormhole Generation Technology (stable traversable wormholes, FTL shortcuts through spacetime)
The list went on with hundreds of advanced technologies that would let him—or more accurately let Rene, since she’d be the one implementing most of them—build civilization infrastructure at scales beyond planetary, approaching stellar and eventually galactic levels.
"Second Gene Lock requirements available for study when ready," the System added, "but recommendation: consolidate current achievement, master planetary-scale capabilities, develop infrastructure to Type II civilization levels before attempting further transcendence—Second Gene Lock will require stellar-scale power and understanding of concepts you have not yet encountered."
Orion dismissed the notification and sat in the cultivation chamber feeling the weight of what he’d achieved settling on him like a mantle of responsibility—he had power now that made him effectively god-like by human standards, capability to affect Earth itself at fundamental levels, and with that power came the absolute requirement to use it responsibly rather than carelessly.
"I need to spend time with family," he decided, recognizing that human connections were more important than ever now that he’d transcended humanity biologically, "need to remember why I’m doing this, who I’m protecting, what makes existence meaningful beyond just accumulating power."
He stood and exited the cultivation chamber, his body moving with grace that made physics seem optional, and headed upstairs to find Cassia and Nyla.
ORION’S MANSION - LIVING ROOM - MIDNIGHT
Cassia was still awake reading on the couch when Orion entered, and she looked up from her tablet with an expression that immediately shifted from casual to concerned because apparently something about him was visibly different.
"You completed it," she said, not a question but a statement, "First Gene Lock, all eleven rings, planetary power—you feel... different, like you’re taking up more space in reality than your body should occupy."
"I completed it," Orion confirmed, sitting beside her carefully because even though he had perfect control he was paranoid about accidentally breaking furniture when his casual strength could now move mountains, "thirteen concepts embodied, genuine planetary-scale capability achieved—I can sense the entire Earth now, feel every living thing on the surface, perceive global systems like weather and tectonic movements."
"That sounds overwhelming," Cassia said quietly, taking his hand, "how do you maintain sense of self when your consciousness is spread across the entire planet?"
"Practice and focus," Orion admitted, "and knowing that I’m still me despite the power, still someone who cares about family and humanity rather than becoming so transcendent that individual people don’t matter anymore—which is why I came up here instead of immediately diving into Second Gene Lock preparation."
They sat together in comfortable silence for several minutes before Cassia spoke again. "Nyla and I received gene enhancement therapy yesterday," she said, and Orion felt surprise because he’d been so focused on cultivation he hadn’t noticed, "we’re both enhanced now—doubled intelligence, tripled lifespan, twice the physical capability—and you’ve been teaching me the basics of cultivation technique through our conversations, so I was wondering if you’d be willing to formalize that training."
"You want to cultivate?" Orion asked, genuinely pleased by the idea.
"I want to understand what you’re experiencing," Cassia corrected, "and I want Nyla to have that option too if she’s interested—we’ll never reach your level because we don’t have your brains assisting us, but even achieving a fraction of your capability would be valuable, and more importantly it would let us share this aspect of your life rather than watching from the outside."
"I’d be honored to teach you," Orion said sincerely, "both of you, and you’re right that you won’t advance as fast as me, but enhanced intelligence from gene therapy will help significantly, and proper cultivation foundation will let you eventually surpass normal human limits even if you never reach planetary scale."
"When do we start?" Cassia asked.
"Tomorrow," Orion decided, "I’ll create simplified cultivation techniques based on the Infinite Circulation Method and Celestial Mind Visualization, adapted for you, it’ll be slower but still effective, and having family cultivation sessions will help keep me grounded as I continue advancing."
Nyla appeared in the doorway looking tired but curious. "I heard my name," she said, walking over to join them on the couch, "what are we talking about?"
"Cultivation training," Orion explained, "teaching you and your mother to manipulate exotic energy and develop capabilities beyond normal human limits—interested?"
"Obviously yes," Nyla said with enthusiasm that made her seem younger than sixteen, "you’re basically a superhero now and you’re offering to teach me the techniques? I’m absolutely interested."
"Then tomorrow we begin," Orion confirmed, pulling both of them into a gentle hug that he consciously controlled to avoid crushing them despite strength that could pulverize steel, "family cultivation sessions, systematic training, and bonding time that doesn’t involve me disappearing into underground chambers for weeks."
They spent another hour talking about normal things—Cassia’s business negotiations with various governments, Nyla’s advanced classes at Starr Academy, the latest developments in space colonization—and Orion found the ordinariness deeply comforting, a reminder that despite his transcendent power he was still part of a family that loved him.
When they finally went to bed around 2 AM, Orion lay awake feeling the planet rotating beneath him, sensing billions of lives sleeping and waking across different time zones, perceiving the vast complex system that was Earth as a living world.
And he felt profound gratitude that he had people who kept him connected to what mattered, who reminded him that power served purpose rather than being an end itself, who loved him despite—or perhaps because of—his extraordinary nature.
First Gene Lock was complete.
Planetary power was achieved.
And the journey continued.
