Chapter 37: The Grand-Magus Ephelia

King stepped forward.

The inner sanctum awaited.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The warmth of the inner sanctum washed over King, but the moment his boots crossed the threshold, the world lost its sharp edges.

The ambient sound of humming mana cut out. The camera angle of his vision shifted dynamically, pulling back to frame his form against the sheer scale of the chamber.

A cutscene had triggered.

The study was a cathedral to arcane knowledge. Floods of stellar light poured from an open-ceiling dome, illuminating floating platforms packed with ancient apparatuses. But King’s focus was entirely locked on the figure at the center of the room.

Grand Magus Ephelia. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

She sat upon a raised dais, an imposing figure standing easily eight feet tall. Her presence was monolithic. She was adorned in magnificent, flowing robes of midnight silk that seemed to bleed into the shadows around her. Her eyes glowed with an absolute, piercing luminescence as she looked down at him.

Then she spoke.

"You walk with quiet steps, intruder," Ephelia’s voice echoed, layered with an echo that vibrated in King’s chest. "But you are not as invisible as you believe."

She leaned forward, resting a chin on her hand.

"I have watched your little trek from the moment your feet touched the silver waters at my gates. Bypassing my guards, raiding my stores, tricking poor Malachar... I tolerated your presence only out of sheer curiosity. A stray mouse wandering into a lion’s den."

Her gaze dropped to the seal glowing faintly in his possession.

"What puzzles me is how a creature like you obtained my personal seal. And more importantly... why you have dared to climb all the way to my inner sanctum."

The cutscene paused, freezing Ephelia in a pose of cold amusement. In front of King’s field of vision, the world dimmed, and three glowing dialogue options materialized in sharp, glowing text.

[1] "I stumbled upon the seal by chance, Grand Magus. I seek your guidance."

[2] "Fuella gave it to me. I have come to deliver a message."

[3] [OTHERS]

King didn’t hesitate. He mentally swiped past the two pre-determined script choices and locked onto the third prompt.

[OTHERS] selected.

The UI box dissolved. The cutscene resumed as King spoke his own mind, despite the overwhelming aura pressing down on him.

"I am here for the knowledge contained within your elemental scrolls," King said clearly, his hand clutching the Arcbearer’s Medallion. "And I don’t want to fight you."

Ephelia’s amused expression vanished. The temperature in the room plummeted in an instant. Her robes flared in violent crimson. She took it exactly as he expected, a subtle threat and a profound insult.

"You do not wish to fight me?" she hissed, rising to her full, terrifying eight-foot height. The sheer pressure of her mana forced King to take a half-step back.

"The arrogance! If you desired my knowledge, you should have registered, bowed your head, and studied for decades like every other student in this academy. Instead, you slink through my halls like a thief, stand in my private sanctum, and dare to demand my craft?"

She pointed a long, ringed finger toward the massive elemental doors.

"Leave this sanctum this instant, or face my full, unbridled wrath."

The cinematic framing snapped away. Full control rushed back into King’s limbs with a sudden jolt.

The cutscene was over.

But Ephelia didn’t immediately launch an attack. Instead, she sank back onto her stone seat, her eyes closing in deep concentration. Between her palms, a tiny spark of pure, blinding magical energy ignited. It began to swell, expanding into a swirling, volatile core of compressed mana.

King’s eyes widened as he recognized the animation cycle.

She wasn’t ignoring him, she was channeling. This was her routine fortification phase.

If he stood there paralyzed, or if he tried to talk his way out of it, that expanding core would finish charging. By the time she was done, her defensive stats and magical output would skyrocket, making the encounter entirely unwinnable for his current level.

The timer was ticking. He had two choices: make a desperate run for the lift, or strike her hard enough to break the channel before she became untouchable.

King instead, channeled his mana directly into the Arcbearer’s Medallion. The dark metal cracked down the center, fracturing under the sudden influx of energy. A swirling, crimson summoning pool erupted from the floor in front of him.

Out of the light, a tall, slender silhouette materialized. The form solidified into Barlan the Arcbearer, the massive, coffin-like box still strapped horizontally across his back.

"Let’s take her down, now" King instructed sharply.

Barlan didn’t hesitate. He launched himself forward, clearing the distance to Ephelia in a single, massive leap.

"Harkan, val’ El’ Dorrn!" his voice thundered mid-descent.

He slammed down directly onto the Grand Magus, triggering a double explosion.

BOo-DOOMM!

The force of the blast completely obliterated the stone dais. Shrapnel and shockwaves sent both parties crashing backward. The expanding core of mana Ephelia had been channeling had exploded as well, completely disrupted by the sudden impact.

King’s HUD flashed as her health bar materialized. A clean 10 percent had been chunked off in the opening strike. Barlan had taken a hit to his own health bar as well; attacking Ephelia while she was forming the core always triggered a violent, repelling explosion that damaged and stunned anyone caught in close proximity.

Recognizing the tactical opening, King followed up immediately. He materialized three construct spears and launched them in rapid succession at the stunned Grand Magus. The first two struck cleanly, piercing her defenses, but Ephelia recovered with terrifying speed, snapping her hand out to slap the third spear away.

The Grand Magus shook off the stun before Barlan could recover. She whirled toward King, her face contorted in fury, and violently waved her left hand.

An explosive gust of wind slammed into King’s entire body. The force lifted him off his feet and launched him back to the entrance, sending him crashing hard into a massive, glowing seal that had just materialized over the doorway.

King hit the floor, his back aching.

The exit was blocked. The battle had officially begun, and there was absolutely no way out now.
