Omniscient Player With A 100x Reward Skill
Chapter 39: Quest Completed: Getting The Elemental Magic Scroll
King de-elevated his construct platform, dropping back down to the wet, cracked stone of the sanctum floor.
Across the room, Grand Magus Ephelia was sprawled amidst the rubble of her throne. The glowing, crystalline fractures along her skin pulsed erratically, leaking wisps of raw, uncontained mana. Her majestic eight-foot frame looked small for the first time as she clutched her torso, struggling just to draw breath.
Barlan stood nearby, his hands empty but his stance heavy and imposing. He stretched out his right hand to retrieve his Hammer of Ruin from the debris. The hammer, coated in a black aura, lifted up and returned to the grip of Barlan, who readied for a second wave of assaults.
"Hold for now, Barlan," King said quietly.
Then closed the distance, his boots clicking softly against the ruined masonry. As he stepped within a few feet of the fallen Magus, the sharp combat interface vanished from his peripheral vision. The ambient sound faded into a low, dramatic hum, and the camera angle of his sight shifted into a cinematic close-up.
A new cutscene had triggered.
Ephelia looked up at him, her proud, glowing eyes now clouded with fear and exhaustion. She held up a trembling, ringed hand, no longer channeling a spell, but shielding herself.
"Wait..." she breathed, her voice cracking with a vulnerability that defied her towering stature. "Please... mercy. I... I underestimated you, traveler. Your strength... the power of that spirit... it is beyond anything I anticipated. Spare my life, and maybe, we can find another way."
The cutscene paused, locking Ephelia in her desperate plea. The world dimmed into a muted grayscale, and two massive, glowing text boxes materialized squarely in King’s field of vision.
[SPARE HER]
[KILL HER]
To an ordinary first-time player, the choice might have seemed like a moral dilemma, or perhaps a temptation to simply execute a high-level boss for raw experience points and claim the scroll afterward. But King didn’t have to guess. He had played this game before. He knew the hidden logic buried in the code of Ephelia’s encounter.
If he chose to kill her here, he’d be met by a disappointing revelation, one he’d experienced in one of his previous playthroughs. Sparing her was the only path to the true reward.
King didn’t hesitate. He mentally selected the first option.
[SPARE HER] selected.
The UI boxes shattered into light, and the cutscene resumed. King lowered his Magic Staff, letting the tip rest against the floor, purposefully stepping back to signal his truce.
"I didn’t come here to destroy the academy, or to kill you Ephelia," King said calmly. "I only came for the scroll."
A visible wave of relief washed over the Grand Magus. The violent crimson pulsing in her fractured skin began to settle back into a calm, stabilizing blue. She lowered her hand, resting her head back against the shattered stone of her dais with a breathless, weary exhale.
"Thank you..." she whispered, her voice filled with genuine gratitude. "Thank you for showing restraint where I showed arrogance."
The moment the words of gratitude left Ephelia’s lips, the environment violently glitched.
The color bled out of the inner sanctum, plunging King’s entire field of vision into total, absolute darkness. It lasted for only a heartbeat. When the light abruptly flooded back into the room, the catastrophic destruction of their battle was entirely gone.
King looked around, completely unsurprised. The shattered stone dais was perfectly intact.
The gaping, glitched voids left by Barlan’s hammer, and Barlan himself had vanished. The wet floor was bone-dry. Even Grand Magus Ephelia was still sitting regally upon her spottless throne, her eight-foot frame unblemished, her midnight robes flowing flawlessly, and her skin free of any crystalline cracks.
Knowing this moment inside and out, King had anticipated this exact transition.
"An impressive display," Ephelia spoke, her voice echoing with its original, majestic resonance. "Everything you have just experienced, from our battle, your victory and my defeat, it was merely a high-tier illusionary spell. From the moment you entered my doors, you entered my trial."
She leaned forward, a genuine smile softening her striking, glowing features.
"You are not a student of this academy, yet you bypassed my security and demanded my craft. I could not simply hand it over. I had to try you. I tested your strength in combat, and I tested your compassion when I lay broken at your feet. In both, you have far exceeded my expectations."
"You possess rare potential," Ephelia continued, her eyes locked onto him with deep respect. "I ask you now, traveler... will you stay? Will you become my personal student and learn the true depths of the arcane within these walls?"
The cutscene paused one final time. The screen dimmed into a soft hue, and two choices flashed in King’s vision:
[BECOME EPHELIA’S STUDENT]
[LEAVE THE MAGI-ACADEMY]
King didn’t need to think about it. Joining the academy would lock his alignment status and bind his character to this specific zone for dozens of gameplay hours. But his journey required the absolute freedom of the Null Alignment.
He mentally tapped the second choice.
[LEAVE THE MAGI-ACADEMY] selected.
The UI dissolved, and the cutscene resumed its final seconds. "My path lies outside the academy walls, Grand Magus. But I appreciate the offer."
Ephelia bowed her head in elegant acceptance. "I understand. A force like yours cannot be easily caged. Go then, King. But know that your actions today have earned my profound respect. You are always welcome within the gates of Ephelias."
She raised her hand. A beautiful, glowing parchment wrapped in four elemental energies materialized in mid-air and floated gently down into King’s hands.
[Elemental Magic Scroll (Rare) obtained!]
King gave a respectful nod, stowing the unique scroll safely into his inventory interface.
With those final words, the dynamic cinematic angles snapped away. Full control flooded back into King’s limbs, and the cutscene officially ended. Ephelia instantly transitioned out of her unique dialogue state, her AI routine resetting as she went right back to her idle, programmed activities, concentrating calmly on the papers and artifacts atop her grand desk.
Right on cue, a cascade of golden system notifications flooded the center of King’s HUD, accompanied by a triumphant chime.
