Chapter 356: Defeating Shanks

A massive mushroom cloud rose into the sky, yet the two figures at the center of the clash held their ground within the violent turbulence.

Shanks’ face turned cold as he stared at Sakazuki, his heart sinking as he realized his reaction had been too intense.

The corner of Sakazuki’s mouth lifted slightly as he said in a low voice, "Your mind is shaken..."

Boom!

His right hand suddenly ignited with blazing magma, thick black smoke pouring out.

"Hellhound!"

Like a meteor cutting through the sky, the attack surged forward.

Shanks swung his blade to the side, and the sound of metal clashing rang out as the magma hound’s head, stretched to an extreme length and coated in dark Armament Haki, slammed into Gryphon’s blade and forced him backward.

At the same time, Sakazuki’s figure vanished from midair.

The magma head pressing against Gryphon condensed back into his right arm, and in the next moment, he appeared right in front of his opponent. Below them, the blue ocean rushed past in a blur.

Sakazuki pressed forward with his fist, pinning Gryphon down, and spoke, "Strange, isn’t it. An Emperor who dominates the seas actually loses composure over a brat from the East Blue."

Shanks’ thoughts raced, but his expression did not change. "That’s a kid I have high hopes for. But I didn’t expect you to dig up even something like that."

Half truth and half lie. On the surface, there was nothing wrong with it, but it could not fool Sakazuki.

The muscles in his right arm swelled as his strength surged.

Boom!!!!

Shanks was sent flying like a baseball.

Sakazuki steadied himself, then stepped forward, his right arm burning with rolling magma and thick smoke as he chased after the pirate.

"Oh? Is that all? A kid you have high hopes for is more important than your own daughter and your crew. There must be some huge secret hidden in him."

The magma fist collided with Gryphon.

Boom!!!!

A violent shockwave exploded outward, blasting open the clouds above and leaving a massive hole that spread in all directions. It was as if reality itself was being crushed by their clashing Conqueror’s Haki.

A red glow flashed in Shanks’ eyes as sword energy burst from Gryphon’s edge, slipping past the incoming fist and slashing toward Sakazuki’s head.

He tilted his head slightly, and the crimson slash collided with the Armament Haki on his chest before being ground away.

His left hand shot out and grabbed the sword energy, his Haki-coated fingers clenching down.

Crack!

The red slash shattered into fragments, then Sakazuki’s left hand formed a fist and smashed toward Shanks’ head, but Shanks tilted his head and dodged. Simultaneously, he raised his left knee, coating it with Haki as he struck forward.

Crack!

Their knees collided, and a white shockwave burst outward. Shanks was pushed slightly onto the back foot.

Sakazuki spoke quietly, "A near-idiotic brat. What exactly makes him worth your schemes..."

Shanks remained expressionless and unconcerned. "Schemes? Then why don’t you just kill him... How about that?"

Sakazuki let out a light laugh.

"Don’t worry."

He naturally understood why Shanks said that. After all, he already knew so much. There was no way he did not know that Luffy was Garp’s grandson.

"I will..."

Shanks’ pupils shrank ever so slightly as Sakazuki continued, "But... only after I wipe out the pirates of the New World. Otherwise, I would be losing a powerful asset for nothing..."

His calm tone sounded as if he were merely stating a fact.

"Of course, no matter what you’re planning, you won’t live to see that day. I can let you reunite in hell.

"You’ll die before that straw hat brat, and he will follow right after to join you. You can chase that ridiculous dream of becoming Pirate King down there.

"After all... pirates who have committed countless crimes don’t go to heaven..."

The aura around Shanks surged, yet he remained unmoved as he took a deep breath.

"What a terrifying man..."

That absolute control was enough to shake a person’s mind.

Boom!!!!

The two separated.

Gryphon flashed in Shanks’ hand as he cut forward. A crescent-shaped crimson slash wrapped in lightning shot toward Sakazuki.

Sakazuki turned into molten lava. His body burned red with intense heat as golden light flickered in his eyes while he looked at the incoming slash.

A terrifying energy gathered within him, then detonated.

The world seemed to tremble.

A ring of fire appeared midair and spread outward, washing over everything as the air itself rippled from the heat. The massive slash paused, then shattered and was forced back.

Endless magma poured out from Sakazuki’s body, swelling without stop.

In an instant, a colossal lava giant, nearly a thousand meters tall, formed and stood upon the sea.

Not far away lay the half-submerged island, the water barely reaching the giant’s knees. Thick black smoke mixed with evaporating seawater, releasing a deafening roar.

Before this towering figure, everything in the world seemed to lose its color.

The lava giant raised an arm hundreds of meters long and aimed at the tiny black dot on the sea below. From its shoulder, magma erupted as the massive arm shot forward toward Shanks.

One arm after another lifted, fired, and reformed continuously.

Below, streaks of sword light flashed across the sea as crimson slashes hundreds of meters long cut the incoming magma arms into pieces. But the massive explosions made it impossible to hold position, forcing Shanks to retreat while cutting them down.

The endless blasts of magma and sweeping sword energy threw the sea into chaos as expanding magma spread in all directions.

From afar, it looked like an ancient lava god forging the land itself.

The ocean boiled violently, consumed by magma, while the entire area was wrapped in white steam.

Boom, boom, boom, boom...

The endless explosions echoed for a long time before finally fading.

Now, this sea held no trace of life. The ocean had been boiled, and corpses of sea creatures floated everywhere.

The scorching white steam turned the area into a massive maze, reducing visibility to less than three meters. The suffocating heat and sulfur from the magma made it even worse.

It had become a sea of death. Even seagulls flying far above could not endure the heat and fell into the ocean.

At the head of the lava giant, Sakazuki reformed his body and observed the surroundings for a while.

All he could see was white steam, and even his Observation Haki could not detect anything.

"He escaped..."

Rumble!

A deep roar sounded as the massive lava giant began to move, stepping into the thick mist ahead.

Then it disappeared.
