"So this is where you live? It’s very nice."

Her grandmother entered the room, looked around, and made a comment.

Back in a space that was all her own, Chloe Reed relaxed considerably. She smiled, poured her grandmother a glass of warm water, and said, "Yes, I just moved in recently. I really like the scenic lake outside."

The apartment complex featured lake-view units. From her balcony, you could take in the entire vista.

The old woman took a sip of water and then asked, "Chloe, do you want to tell me what’s been going on lately?"

Chloe’s gaze faltered. She didn’t really want to talk about it.

’It was too pathetic.’

’It even felt a little humiliating.’

So she said, "Oh, Grandma, it’s getting really late. Let’s go to bed, shall we? Staying up late isn’t good for you."

She hugged her grandmother’s arm, acting cute.

The old woman couldn’t resist her when she acted like this, so she had no choice but to drop the subject.

The two of them, grandmother and granddaughter, slept together. Chloe nestled dependently in her grandmother’s arms and quickly fell asleep.

「The next day.」

When she woke up, her grandmother wasn’t there.

She hurried out and saw the old woman busy in the kitchen.

"Grandma, why are you cooking? It’s so much work. Let’s just go out to eat," Chloe said, walking over to her.

But the old woman shook her head. "We’re not going out. How long has it been since you’ve had my cooking? Don’t you miss it?"

"Of course I do, but I’d rather you not get tired, Grandma," Chloe said with a wide smile.

But the old woman said, "I knew you did. That’s why I just made a couple of simple things, both of them your favorites."

She would have liked to make something more complex, but unfortunately, Chloe’s pantry was limited. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

Chloe went to wash up, and by the time she was finished, breakfast was ready.

It was a simple meal of egg crepes and tomato egg-drop soup. Chloe took one bite and couldn’t help but sigh in contentment.

"This is Grandma’s cooking, all right."

The old woman smiled. "If you like it, then eat up."

"I will!"

And Chloe certainly did eat her fill. It was the best her appetite had been in a long time.

After they finished eating, she took out a jewelry box and handed the sapphire earrings to her grandmother.

"Take a look. Is this it?"

The old woman took them and examined them carefully, her expression filled with relief and excitement. "Yes, that’s right. These are the ones."

She lovingly caressed the sapphire earrings, a dazed, faraway smile on her face.

It was as if she was remembering her youth.

"Back then, your grandfather was preparing a surprise for me and didn’t tell me about it. But when I visited his home, his mother told me. I fell in love with these sapphires the moment I saw them. Later, I didn’t even wait for him to present them; I just blurted out that I’d already seen them. Your grandfather was so shy back then. He even blushed."

The old woman reminisced with a smile.

As Chloe listened, however, her heart sank.

’Grandfather wasn’t the one who gave them to Grandma?’

She couldn’t help but think of what Autumn Linton had said before.

’But that seemed absurd.’

’If they weren’t a gift for Grandma, then why didn’t he deny it at the time? And why did he marry her later?’

Her mind was a mess. She gave up trying to think about it and just looked at her grandmother, saying, "People were very reserved in those days."

"Yes," the old woman nodded. She carefully put the box away and said, "Chloe, I’m so happy you found these."

Chloe hugged her. "As long as you’re happy."

Just then, a cell phone rang. It was the old woman’s.

The ringtone was very loud so that she wouldn’t miss a call.

She took out her phone, squinted at the screen, and then answered, "Hello, Autumn."

Chloe’s breath hitched. Autumn Linton had actually taken the initiative to call her grandmother!
