Our Anniversary, You Chose Her – I Chose Divorce
Chapter 472: Where’s the Fried Egg?
Walker quickly reached out to steady her.
Chloe quickly asked, "Grandma, are you alright?"
The old woman stared blankly for a few seconds before shaking her head. "I’m fine, I’m fine. Just a little weak. I’ve been lying down for too long..."
The old woman even gave Chloe a reassuring smile.
Chloe quickly lowered her gaze and supported her grandmother, helping her walk slowly back and forth inside the room.
After just a few laps, the old woman was exhausted, and the color had drained from her face.
"I’m tired, so tired..."
Chloe helped her lean back against the headboard and asked, "Is there anything you’d like to eat?"
The old woman stared blankly ahead, her eyes growing more cloudy and vacant. After a long moment, she said, "Noodles. Let’s have noodles."
Chloe nodded. "Okay."
Just then, Walker spoke up. "Grandma, when you’re discharged in a few days, why don’t you come live with us at Jardinelle? Jardinelle is very big. You can grow flowers and vegetables there, and even raise cats and dogs."
Hearing this, Chloe immediately furrowed her brow and shot him a look.
’How could he say that to Grandma right now? Grandma already knows we’re getting a divorce. If he invites her to live with us at a time like this, what is she going to think?’
But Walker didn’t look at her, simply keeping a gentle smile fixed on the old woman.
The old woman paused for a few seconds before nodding. "Alright."
Her answer stunned both Walker and Chloe. Neither of them had expected her to agree!
"Chloe."
The old woman suddenly took her hand, her eyes filled with affection. "You’re not getting a divorce anymore, are you? If you don’t want to, then just forget about it and live your lives together."
Chloe’s expression stiffened.
A faint, happy smile touched the corners of Walker’s lips.
The old woman immediately added, "He won’t agree to it anyway, so just put up with him for now. Once you find someone suitable, then you can take him to court."
Chloe couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
The smile on Walker’s face, however, froze solid.
’Is this for real?!’
’Isn’t this the kind of thing you’re supposed to say after I leave?’
’She said it right to my face?!’
A faint smile played on Chloe’s rosy lips. "Okay, I’ll listen to you."
The old woman looked at her for a long moment before nodding. "That’s good. Very good."
Chloe went to buy the noodles. After she placed them in front of her grandmother, the old woman simply stared at the bowl for a long while before suddenly saying, "Why is there no poached egg? The egg broke apart, floating all over..."
She seemed lost in a memory, pointing at the bowl and murmuring to herself.
At first, Chloe didn’t understand. "Grandma," she said, "this is just regular shredded chicken noodles. There’s no poached egg."
"Yes, there is. I’ve had it before," the old woman said after a few seconds. "She didn’t know how to cook, but she insisted on making it for me. Then the egg broke and got everywhere... Oh, so little, but with such a big heart..."
Chloe froze. She quickly turned away, taking a deep breath to compose herself.
’She finally understood. Grandma was talking about Autumn Linton when she was a little girl!’
’All this time, has she been wondering why her own daughter wanted to harm her?’ 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
’But how could she ever make sense of it?’
An unbearable sorrow washed over Chloe. Her heart felt like it was being squeezed in a vise, aching and suffocating her.
She forced a smile and said, "Grandma, go on and eat. Once you’re out of the hospital, I’ll make it for you."
The old woman stared blankly at the noodles before her. After a long moment, she picked up her chopsticks and began to eat.
The atmosphere in the room turned heavy.
Walker watched from the side, taking in all of Chloe’s sorrow and pain, and a complicated feeling churned within him.
