Chloe Reed tried to see it from her perspective and could understand why Iris Yates was so frustrated right now.

While petting the dog, she said, "Why don’t you go talk to Nathaniel Monroe? Ask him what he was thinking."

Iris Yates looked at her. "You think I should?"

"He’s the one who started this mess, so he should be the one to clean it up. The pressure shouldn’t all be on you." Chloe Reed thought that what Nathaniel Monroe had done was really out of line.

’If he doesn’t like her, why would he say something so misleading?’

’And if he does like her, then he should be pursuing Iris Yates openly and honestly.’

’But now everything was a mess, and Iris was the one stuck with all the pressure.’

Iris Yates bit her lip and said, "Okay, I’ll call him right now."

Chloe Reed glanced at the time. "It’s getting late. I should head back."

Iris Yates nodded. "Okay. Get home safe."

"Mm."

"..."

After Chloe Reed left, Iris Yates dialed Nathaniel Monroe’s number.

The phone rang three times before he picked up, his voice groggy and indistinct.

"Hello? What’s up?"

Iris Yates demanded, "Nathaniel Monroe, where are you? I need to see you."

"Huh? Why do you need to see me?" Nathaniel Monroe rolled over, his voice growing a little clearer.

Iris Yates gritted her teeth. "Do I need to remind you what you did? You bastard!"

"Wait..." Nathaniel Monroe suddenly grew agitated. "What did I do? Why are you cursing at me? I have no idea what you’re talking about!"

"I’m the one who should be confused here!" Iris exploded. "Are you out of your mind? Why would you tell my mom we’re a couple? When did we get together? Why didn’t you talk to me about it first? Did I agree to it?"

Nathaniel Monroe was stunned into silence by her shouting. After a long moment, he finally said, "I was just trying to help you, wasn’t I?"

"You think I need your help?" Iris put her hands on her hips, pacing back and forth in her room. "We have to meet, right now. This has to be resolved! If we don’t, my parents are going to think we’re married!"

Nathaniel Monroe suddenly chuckled, then quickly stifled it. "That’s not going to happen," he said. "It’s just a misunderstanding. I’ll explain everything."

"Then explain it!" Iris roared again. "I tried calling you before, but I couldn’t get through. Were you deliberately ignoring me?"

"No, of course not! I’ve just been really busy lately. I was asleep a minute ago," Nathaniel Monroe said hurriedly, then cleared his throat. "Okay, we can meet. Where?"

Iris gritted her teeth. "I’ll send you the location. Get over here now!"

With that, she hung up the phone.

But just as she finished getting dressed and was about to head out, a message from Nathaniel Monroe came through. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Nathaniel Monroe: [Something came up last minute, so I can’t meet tonight. Let’s reschedule.]

"You goddamn bastard!"

Iris Yates cursed aloud, clutching her phone and seething with anger.

"..."

That evening, when Chloe Reed returned to Jardinelle, she found Walker Grant sitting on the sofa beside the old lady. The two of them were in the middle of a conversation.

When he saw she was back, he said, "Get yourself ready. We’re going out."

Chloe Reed’s breath caught in her throat. She thought of the person he had mentioned before, the one they had been trying to meet: Miles Hawthorne.

’They were going to see him tonight!’

She nodded and turned to head upstairs.

The old lady watched them with a wide, knowing smile. "Have you two made up?"

Annie York, who was standing to one side, heard the old lady’s words and subconsciously began to twist her fingers together.
