Overpowered Resident Doctor
Chapter 353 - 352: Not My Everything
This "special appointment" was more of an honorary title.
If Yan Feifan were to perform surgery or provide medical guidance at PLA General Hospital, he would still be compensated according to market rates. All the proper remuneration and benefits would be provided.
Hearing Qin Feng’s explanation, and unable to refuse his enthusiastic invitation, Yan Feifan "reluctantly" agreed.
Just as he ended the call, Liu Xia said she needed to get back to her restaurant to look after the business, and so she took her leave.
After the Yan siblings saw Liu Xia out, Yu Suye began to explain indignantly about the phone call. "Remember my mom mentioning her friend from Binhai whose daughter wanted cosmetic surgery?"
Yan Feifan nodded, and Yu Suye continued, "They didn’t show up at the appointed time, and on top of that, they came wearing heavy makeup."
"We didn’t hear from them after that. Turns out they went to another cosmetic surgery clinic for the procedure."
Yu Suye scoffed, a hint of schadenfreude in her voice. "And what happened? The results weren’t what they wanted, so now they’re thinking of Feifan again."
"Of course, I turned them down flat."
Yan Feifan chuckled. "Su Ye, I didn’t realize you were so petty and held such a grudge!"
Yu Suye shot him a look and huffed. "All women are petty and hold grudges."
"Feifan, you’d better not get on my bad side..."
The next morning, Yan Feifan arrived at the neurosurgery department of the Affiliated Hospital.
Mr. Lo tossed him the medical files for two patients with intraspinal tumors and then shared some good news.
A date for the seminar had been set.
It was scheduled for the second weekend in August.
The seminar would be hosted by the Affiliated Hospital’s departments of Neurosurgery and Brain Surgery, and Baining Hospital. It would be co-organized by the Neurosurgery Division of the Binhai Medical Association and the editorial department of the Binhai University Medical Journal.
The necessary funding would be sponsored by Baining Medical Technology.
Attendees would be selected through two channels: direct invitation and open application.
The total number of participants was to be kept under one hundred and twenty, if possible.
"One hundred and twenty people?"
Yan Feifan was taken aback. "Mr. Lo, isn’t that a few too many people?" he asked, concerned.
"I’ve sat in on plenty of seminars before, and one with forty or fifty people is already considered very large."
"Most of them only have ten or twenty attendees."
Lo Jun let out a hearty laugh. "Xiaoyan, the actual number of attendees will only be higher than that, not lower. That’s why I said we’ll *try* to keep it under control."
"You have no idea how many people have contacted me through various channels about your paper in just the last few days."
Lo Jun continued his calculation aloud, "There are seven or eight hundred top-tier hospitals in the country, over a hundred medical universities and colleges, plus hundreds of medical research institutions, professional medical journals, and so on."
"A mere one hundred and twenty spots won’t be nearly enough to go around."
Yan Feifan thought Mr. Lo was being a bit blindly optimistic, but seeing him so excited, he decided not to argue.
He figured they could always adjust the scale of the seminar as preparations progressed and they got more feedback.
Next, the two of them began discussing the topic of in-vivo nerve cultivation.
Lo Jun said softly, "Xiaoyan, the biggest problem we’re facing right now is pain management."
"My four volunteers, as well as the four at the plastic surgery center, have all reported that the nerve pain is unbearable."
"Mr. Shi and Mr. Luo Zhen from the plastic surgery center have gathered several of our hospital’s senior anesthesiologists, and they’re currently working on a long-term pain management solution."
Lo Jun sighed softly. "Mr. Wang and I have decided to pause any further surgeries until they come up with an effective pain management plan."
Yan Feifan agreed that it was a prudent move.
After his rounds, Yan Feifan consulted Mr. Lo about the transplantation and suturing of fine nerve branches...
At 12:10 PM, Yan Feifan arrived at Staff Cafeteria No. 1 to find Yu Suye and his sister waiting for him at the entrance.
Lately, Yan Ziruo had rarely joined Yan Feifan for lunch, saying she didn’t want to intrude on his time alone with Yu Suye.
So Yan Feifan asked without thinking, "Sis, you need something from me?"
Yan Ziruo’s eyes widened as she huffed, "What? Can’t I eat lunch with you unless I need something? Am I interrupting?"
"You’re a classic case of getting a girlfriend and forgetting all about your sister."
Yan Feifan rolled his eyes as his sister continued, "My two colleagues from the finance department, Zhong Ting and Liu Xiyun..."
"They’ve had their bandages removed. Even though there are still some faint surgical marks on their faces, the improvement to their looks is obvious."
"So, of course, that’s got a lot of other people interested."
"Feifan..."
Yan Feifan cut her off. "Sis, you know the plastic surgery center has given me a lot of new revenue targets. My time has to be spent on the most critical procedures."
"I’m trying not to take on minor surgeries like those anymore."
Yan Ziruo shot him another glare. "Of course, I know that. That’s why I didn’t promise them anything. I wanted to ask your opinion first."
"Anyway, I’m starving. Let’s go get our food..."
The three of them got their food and found a relatively quiet table to sit at.
"Feifan," Yu Suye began in a low voice, "this morning I went to see that patient... the one who was castrated and had his eyes stabbed..."
"He’s recovering pretty well, physically."
"Especially his eyes. Thanks to the efforts of the ophthalmologists, they managed to save his left eye. They said that if he recovers well, he could regain 0.3 or 0.4 vision."
"His spirits are pretty low, though..."
Yu Suye lowered her voice even more. "I’m planning to talk to him in a couple of days. I want to convince him to be our guinea pig for the phalloplasty procedure."
"He can make a small sacrifice, contribute to medical science, and maybe even lessen some of his guilt."
"Plus, there’s a good chance of a pleasant surprise for him."
Yan Feifan criticized her in a deadpan voice, "Su Ye, we’re doctors. We’re only responsible for treating patients."
"It’s not our place to judge them. Whether they’re a murderer or a hero, we have to treat them all equally."
Yu Suye just hummed noncommittally.
They had only been eating for a few minutes when an attending ophthalmologist—Yan Feifan’s former medical school classmate and class monitor—walked up to their table carrying a tray.
"Hey, everyone!"
Guo Yiweng greeted them and, making himself right at home, sat down in the only empty seat at the table.
"Yan Feifan, I’m here to thank you on behalf of Zhu Lin for getting Mr. Tan to handle that family’s psychotherapy."
Guo Yiweng said with a broad smile, "With Mr. Tan’s expertise, I’m sure the results will be significant."
With his mouth full, Yan Feifan just grunted in response.
"Yan Feifan, even back when we were classmates, I knew you were destined for great things. I just didn’t expect it to happen so fast."
Guo Yiweng said with a sigh of admiration, "So many patients with intraspinal tumors are eagerly waiting for you to operate on them now."
Yan Feifan swallowed his food. Guessing that Guo Yiweng wouldn’t be visiting him for no reason, he said bluntly, "I only handle the surgeries."
"I have nothing to do with scheduling or waiting lists. Mr. Lo is in charge of all that."
This arrangement was meant to protect Yan Feifan.
With his current level of seniority and experience, Yan Feifan would have found it difficult to properly handle all the string-pulling from patients and their connections.
Furthermore, his time was too valuable to be wasted on navigating the social obligations and politics that came with it.
So, Lo Jun and Baining Hospital had both, in unspoken agreement, taken over that part of the job.
This left Yan Feifan free to concentrate solely on planning and performing the surgeries.
Of course, screening and prioritizing suitable patients was both a hassle and a rare form of power.
It all depended on how Lo Jun and Baining Hospital chose to wield it.
Stonewalled, Guo Yiweng pressed on, unwilling to give up. "Currently, the intraspinal tumor surgeries are only scheduled for Thursdays and Fridays."
"Yan Feifan, with your skills, you could easily schedule a few more surgeries on the weekend, or on a Monday or Tuesday." 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
Yan Feifan’s reply was blunt. "I don’t have time."
"The tumor puncture injections are only one part of my job, not all of it..."
