Chapter 55: Farm Life

While Linlin worked hard in her writing job, Naia pretty much scoured through the markets of Lotus Town over the past few days.

Anyway, she did not have tens of billions or an endless space at her disposal. Her space was limited, and buying a few tons at depots saved her a lot of time.

This was unless things were nearby, and changing shops would help her hide her storage of the items into her space. But if they were more than thirty minutes away, she would not bother.

The next day, she went out early and bought tons of white rice, brown rice, wheat, and so on.

She also went to depots for bulk buying of the sauces, oil refineries, and seasonings. The town had quite a few makers of these things, especially since the raw materials were more available and more affordable here.

The manufacturing was without a known brand and mostly family-owned, but Naia didn’t mind this and just bought them as long as their reputation was alright. It was also her way of contributing to the economy.

She also used this time to locate a few mines to feed her space. While her country, Danian, had a lot of mines, none of them were useful to her space.

The mines that were useful were too far, all abroad, and some of them couldn’t be accessed with her current situation.

The closest mines were the jade mines located in Varma Country, the country north of theirs.

It could be accessed through the borders, but smuggling in was a bit cumbersome and unnecessarily risky, so she decided to push the trip to when she could legitimately head there.

Anyway, she should be getting her identity within a few weeks. She heard that the progress of the sperm donor’s case was almost done.

Other than these, she also helped out a lot in the farm, learning the basics very quickly.

How could she not learn of it herself? While she could designate others to do so, knowing a bit for herself would never be a waste, let alone when she could plant in her own portable space.

Besides, she was planning to survive by sustainability in the apocalypse. They couldn’t set up base in advance since the conditions wouldn’t allow it, and having a portable planatble space was a miracle that could save her life for the next few decades.

Another reason was that she already saw Grandma’s farm, or at least a part of it, as resources she’d fit in her space.

She had tried the ’taking existing plants with the soil’ a few times, though only with small plants and shrubs. Though tiring, she confirmed that she could take in patches of land.

This meant that, when the time came, she could just take several plots from grandma’s lot, saving her a lot of effort.

There was also a factor of a wish in the past life; since people had always said that her powers were related to the wood element, she always had a fantasy of farming. It was why she studied a lot of books back then, even if there was no uncontaminated soil to plant anymore.

The habit started from nostalgia for her mother, but in time, it was mostly done for her own satisfaction.

She also took over several errands, like feeding the chickens. Unlike how it was with Hans, she did it with ease every time.

"Cluck! Cluck!"

When she arrived at their pen, the cute hens and chicks would always follow her and even nudge her. They would eat, but they would always find a way to get in contact with her.

She had observed how they were in others and knew the differences. For example, when Hans—or even grandma—spread out their food they would always go for the food and not pay the ’feeders’ any mind at all.

Even Big C seemed amicable to her, often roaming closely, as if guarding her along with the other chickens.

Not just this, even the neighbors’ cows and the goats were fond of her. She noticed this yesterday when she volunteered to help out and learn some animal husbandry from the neighbors.

Unlike most first timers, Naia could milk the cows easily. She could also herd them effortlessly, so much so that even the animals’ owners were jealous of her.

In retrospect, she had encountered a few cats and dogs as well, right? This was true even when she was shopping around in towns. It was just that she was too busy stockpiling, so all she could do was pat them on the head and give them bits of food.

There was even a case when a cow was spooked and ran to hiding. At the time, not even its owner could get it out. This was particularly troublesome because there was a schedule in farming that they had to follow through.

But when it was Naia who got pulled in by the villagers to lure it out, it really did.

Overall, animals seemed to be fond of her. She had no idea if this was normal because there were no animals in the apocalypse. They all died before she was even born.

Mostly they weren’t able to survive the harsh conditions of the world, while those who did were eventually eaten for their meat.

Thinking of it this way, it was a bit sad, wasn’t it? 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

Cluck! CLUCK!

Her attention was pulled out from her reverie by the call of a ’handsome’ rooster.

She watched the showy rooster strut in front of her, side to side, as if afraid she wouldn’t see both of its sides. It also seemed to have noticed her distraction.

She giggled and gave him a handful of rice bran.

She found a nice rock to sit on, watching the hens and the chicks go around their way, with many of them often hanging out with her for a while.

She didn’t think they’d become spirits, but she wasn’t sure if that was the case for the rooster, who seemed particularly smart for a bird.

"Big C..." she paused, rubbing the bird’s forehead. "I wonder what’d happen to you in the apocalypse?"
