Pokémon Court
Chapter 880: The So-Called Foundation, The Application of Psychic Power
"The more experienced a Trainer is, the stronger their Pokémon become."
"This saying is widely circulated. What it likely refers to is the foundation a Trainer accumulates over time. For example, the Float Stone breeding method is just one of Steven’s many foundations, and Sabrina’s technique of using psychic power to enhance her Pokémon’s strength is one of hers. As for Grayson of the Grass Star Style, his foundation lies in the secret techniques passed down through his school, i.e, the application of Grass-type moves and their training methods. As for my own foundation, aside from the specialized training methods for the four types of weather and training methods aimed at coordination ability, the rest is relatively insignificant."
"Hmm..."
Terrance realized that once one reaches a certain level—the top tier, the level of Top Trainers....
Most Trainers’ main Pokémon do not differ drastically in basic qualities. What often determines a Pokémon’s combat power is the foundation it has accumulated.
These basic qualities refer to reaction speed, resistance, endurance, explosive power, coordination, physical strength, and so on... Compared to all sorts of strange and varied moves and Abilities, the methods for training these basic qualities are much simpler.
Every Top Trainer, through long-term experience, is thoroughly familiar with ways to improve these basic qualities. Although training methods may differ and the time required for development may vary, the ultimate goal is the same: to make these fundamental qualities serve the Pokémon’s moves.
For example, if you want to train a Pokémon’s speed and coordination, you can pair that training with Quick Attack, allowing the move to be executed while in motion and thereby maximizing the Pokémon’s mobility.
If you wish to strengthen it further, you can focus on enhancing explosive power. If you want the Pokémon to maintain that speed for a long time, you train its endurance...
In short, for these extraordinary creatures known as Pokémon, moves are their foundation. Basic qualities exist to serve those moves and are not, by themselves, the decisive factor in the outcome of a top-level battle.
Therefore, while basic qualities are certainly important, the true core lies in how moves are utilized.
A Pokémon’s basic qualities, its moves, and the Trainer’s accumulated foundation combined together form the Pokémon’s foundation.
Terrance’s Altaria does not have the explosive power of Arcanine, nor the coordination skills of Beautifly. Its control over energies other than Fairy energy is not as precise as Mismagius’s. Yet its combat power is greater, because it has accumulated a vast foundation.
Its Dragon-type talent, self-Mega Evolution, Fairy Aura, Flame of Life, Erase, and, on top of that, its thoroughly tempered foundational moves. Although these do not allow Altaria to surpass Terrance’s other Pokémon in every individual aspect, in terms of overall strength, Altaria is unquestionably Terrance’s ace.
Gardevoir stepped into the top-tier before Ninetales, yet Ninetales later overtook it, and the gap between them became apparent once more.
Having suffered from a lack of accumulated foundation, if they were to engage in a full-scale battle, Gardevoir’s chances of victory would be extremely slim.
In the battle against Grayson, if Gardevoir had not held a type advantage and if the opponent had not been unfamiliar with its fighting style, winning would have been difficult.
"Perhaps... this is a direction..."
Just as Terrance reached the outskirts of the desert, he suddenly thought of Gardevoir’s psychic power.
"Gardevoir... possesses blue and purple psychic power." Terrance’s thoughts raced. Perhaps it was because, when it evolved into Kirlia, it had been influenced by the powers of Mewtwo and Mew. After evolving, Gardevoir’s psychic power, and the glow of its Confusion, had turned blue-violet.
Up to now, this psychic power had not displayed anything particularly special, and Terrance had never looked into it too deeply.
But now, because of the unique color of this psychic power, Terrance began to associate it with Gardevoir’s next direction of training!
"Gardevoir was born from Mewtwo’s experiment, and Mewtwo also shows a certain affinity toward it. That means there must be some connection between them..."
"This unique colored psychic power makes me think of Mewtwo and Mew’s Confusion..."
"Back when we were heading to New Island, we encountered that massive rainstorm. Its power was even more terrifying than the Rainstorm Castform created, and that storm was controlled by Confusion..."
"At that time, Mewtwo’s strength, although its psychic power was formidable, hadn’t yet reached an awe-inspiring level. Having only recently been created, even Altaria could hold its own against it for a while. What made it terrifying was its learning ability, and what Team Rocket valued was the potential inherent in its origin genes. Otherwise, it’s questionable whether Mewtwo could have stood up to Giovanni’s Pokémon army."
"Speaking of learning to use psychic power, Sabrina once told me that psychic power has the broadest range of applications among all attributes. Perhaps I should learn from Sabrina, learn from Mewtwo, and let Gardevoir study the applications of psychic power... After all, Gardevoir has most likely inherited the nature of Mewtwo and Mew’s psychic power. It has extremely strong plasticity. Rather than restricting it to the established Psychic-type moves summarized by others, maybe I should let it attempt something different..."
"Coincidentally, Gardevoir can learn Rain Dance. If it truly possesses psychic power related to Mewtwo and Mew, why shouldn’t it try replicating Mewtwo’s ability? It doesn’t matter if the power can’t reach that level. The key is to confirm how Gardevoir’s psychic power differs from that of other Pokémon."
"The fusion of psychic power and weather-based moves might reveal a new path. If Gardevoir can use Confusion to manipulate a rainstorm, then perhaps we’ll have taken the first step, proving that this path is feasible!"
To treat Gardevoir as a Legendary Pokémon like Mewtwo and train it with legendary power as the goal. Terrance’s idea was undeniably bold.
The moment this thought surfaced, Terrance’s expression relaxed. In the past, Gardevoir’s rapid progress had caused it to miss the process of accumulation. But it wasn’t too late. Everything could begin again from the starting point.
...
...
"This is the place."
Returning to the Desert Ruins once more, Terrance let out a long breath and looked at the hollow depression in the center, a faint smile appearing on his face.
Over the next few days, he intended to fully explore the secrets of these Desert Ruins.
Speaking of which, this desert held countless mysteries. Terrance had not forgotten the attack he encountered previously in the Mirage Ruins.
That accidental fall into a space-time rift had left a deep impression on him. Unfortunately, in the several visits since, even when he deliberately searched, he had never again found any trace of the Mirage Ruins.
"Strange... The desert is only so big. It’s not like the Mirage Ruins could have run out of it."
Terrance speculated that after his intrusion, the Mirage Ruins had either sunk underground or been hidden by the culprit who caused him to fall into the space-time rift.
And that culprit was almost certainly Unown.
After a while.
Within a remote ruin in the Hoenn Desert, a sound rang out.
Then, continuous noise followed...
"Pupitar, eat up!"
Terrance pointed toward the pit ahead. After releasing Pupitar from its Poké Ball, he declared boldly.
Pupitar was not polite in the slightest. The ores here were delicacies to it. After going several days without enjoying them, it was now feeling a sense of longing and eagerness.
In an instant, Pupitar shot forward, plunging into the abyss. Before long, crunching sounds echoed from below.
"Too bad Rotom Pokédex isn’t here. Otherwise, it could help me monitor the energy fluctuations down there."
Terrance shook his head slightly. Although Pupitar’s reaction made him vaguely feel that this place was nearly fully excavated, he had no precise measure of the progress.
Still, Terrance was not in a hurry. Having stocked up on supplies, he was fully prepared to train here for some time.
However, as Pupitar continued hollowing out the area, Terrance failed to notice that somewhere in the desert, a colossal figure suddenly awakened. If Terrance were to see it, he would undoubtedly be shocked beyond measure.
Because the Pokémon slowly making its way in this direction was none other than Regirock, the very one he had encountered twice before.
