Chapter 231: The Abandoned Tyrogue

In the days that followed, Ash's group first experienced an attack by Team Rockets attempting to poach a Delibird, and then, while passing through Mount Silver, encountered a Ninetales that had lived for over two hundred years.

What was absurd was that this Ninetales, which had lived for over two hundred years, had an original owner who bore a ninety-nine percent resemblance to Brock, and for this reason, the Ninetales intended to use its powerful Psychic energy to influence Brock's mind.

In the end, with Ash's guidance, this Ninetales let go of its inner obsession and chose to become Brock's Pokémon.

Then, to take a shortcut, the group planned to pass through a cave in Mount Silver.

After passing through the deep cave tunnel without any major incidents, Ash's group encountered what appeared to be an abandoned Tyrogue at the cave's exit.

Why did it appear to be abandoned? Because this Tyrogue had a blue scarf tied around its neck, though the scarf was now tattered and torn.

"That Tyrogue doesn't seem to have much energy!" Misty said.

Ash shook his head and said, "It isn't lacking energy; it's fishing. Misty, if you look closely at the tree next to it, you'll know."

"Fishing?"

The two looked at the tree in confusion. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

Upon closer inspection, one could faintly see two strange Pokémon with white fur standing on the tree branches.

"Ash, what kind of Pokémon are those two?" Brock asked, puzzled.

"A Primeape and a Mankey. Those two are wild, and that Tyrogue must have been abandoned by someone," Ash said.

"Abandoned? Then what are they fishing for? Are they trying to rob us?"

Misty was curious. This path required passing through a dark and dangerous cave, so hardly anyone should be passing by.

"They are indeed trying to rob us, but all they need is Pokémon food."

Ash took out two cans of food and tossed them over.

When the Tyrogue saw this, it first pretended to be indifferent, but the corner of its eye remained fixed on the backpack Ash had pulled the items from.

Little did it know that Ash saw through its little scheme at a glance. "I know what you're thinking. If you want food, you can have as much as you want if you come with me. But if you want to rob us, you'll have to see if you can beat us."

"Tyrogue?!"

Upon hearing this, the Tyrogue's expression changed instantly. It picked up the two cans of food from the ground and called out to the tree nearby, and suddenly a large number of pinecones flew from the tree toward Ash.

"Honestly, you take the food and that's fine, but to throw a tantrum? You've been spoiled! Lucario, I choose you!"

"Lucario."

As soon as Lucario came out, it used Quick Attack and chased after the Tyrogue, the Mankey, and the others.

Seeing Lucario attacking, the Tyrogue decisively turned around and used Swift to disrupt Lucario's pace.

However, Lucario, who was battle-hardened and possessed powerful Aura, was not so easily stopped.

With just a single leap, Lucario arrived in front of the Tyrogue.

Seeing its big brother in danger, the Primeape stopped running and turned back to use a Rage Fist.

Listening to the incoming fist wind, Lucario sidestepped to dodge the punch, then grabbed the Primeape's hand and performed a shoulder throw.

Ash called out, "Lucario, just give them a little lesson; their nature isn't actually bad."

"Lucario!"

Lucario nodded, and then proceeded to spar with the three Pokémon.

Well, calling it a sparring match was just to give the Tyrogue and the others some face; to be accurate, Lucario was unilaterally beating all three of them up.

For Pokémon that had been abandoned by humans, even if they harbored hatred toward humans, Ash could understand. But understanding is one thing, and discipline is another. This guy took the benefits and still gave them attitude, which was exactly why Ash had Lucario discipline them.

"Ash, are you planning to catch that Tyrogue?" Misty asked.

"We'll see."

Ash himself wasn't sure. After all, the Tyrogue had three evolution branches: Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, and Hitmontop. Each had its own advantages, but as a pure Fighting type, it had too many disadvantages against Psychic, Flying, and Fairy types, and its move pool was quite narrow.

Just as Lucario was having a great time playing with the Tyrogue and the others, a young man dressed as a martial artist ran over with a Hitmonlee and a Hitmonchan.

The young man asked very politely, "Um, I'm really sorry, may I ask, did this Tyrogue do something excessive?"

"What's wrong?" Ash asked, puzzled.

"It's nothing. I just happen to know that Tyrogue. Its nature isn't bad; it's just that it was abandoned by a human, so..."

The young man was clearly intending to plead on behalf of the Tyrogue.

"I know its nature isn't bad, so I just had Lucario play with it. Don't worry, we won't hurt it," Ash said.

"Oh, I see!" The young man reached up and scratched his head to ease the awkwardness, saying, "By the way, you're taking this path to get to Mahogany Town, right?"

"Yeah, we are traveling to challenge the Johto League Silver Conference, and we need to go to Mahogany Town to challenge the Gym."

As he spoke, Ash showed the young man the six badges he had already obtained.

Upon seeing the badge from the Cianwood Gym among the badges Ash had collected, the young man exclaimed, "Ah! That badge is... the Storm Badge! So... you have also battled against Master Chuck from the Cianwood Gym!"

"Master Chuck? So that means you are Mr. Chuck's..." Ash also looked surprised.

"I haven't introduced myself yet. I am Master Chuck's top disciple. My name is Kiyo."

After some discussion, Ash and his group learned that Kiyo was training for the P1 Grand Prix, and that after the Tyrogue was abandoned, he was the first person it encountered. He wanted to try to resolve the Tyrogue's misunderstanding of humans, and at the same time, he saw the potential in the Tyrogue and intended to catch it to prepare for the fighting tournament together.
