Lady Li had always been calm, and Lian Manman had almost never seen her get angry. But when it came to this matter, Lady Li’s expression was different from usual, and her tone had slightly changed.
Not to mention anything else, just the fact that it could make Lady Li so angry shows how infuriating this matter was.
"How could there be such people!" Lian Manman was also a bit stunned by the matter.
"Absolutely true, these past couple of days, people in our village aren’t talking about anything else, just this matter. Everyone says they’ve never seen such heartless, shameless people!" Lian Yeye said.
Chatting is a colloquial term commonly used by the tenant farmers in Thirty Mile Camp, meaning having a casual chat or gossiping.
"To do something like that, they really can’t be considered human," Lady Li said. It was rare for her to speak with such harsh words. "That daughter-in-law is worthless, and so is that man. Saying he’s weak or whatever is nonsense. If he had any conscience at all, his mother wouldn’t have ended up like this. And he can still come to extort money; clearly, he’s just like his wife. Ah..."
"Did the Yang Family give them money?" Lian Manman asked.
"They wanted to give money, to turn a big issue into a small one and small one into nothing. But unfortunately, they were so poor that they couldn’t afford to give anything. They were already poor, and whatever little money they saved was spent on marrying that widow, then on hiring a doctor to save her, and then on her funeral. There’s nothing left now; I’ve heard they even sold decent items, rolled up and sold their bed mats," Lady Li said. "The people didn’t get their money, so they still haven’t left and are causing a scene there."
"Such people, giving them money would be too good for them. While it is said that human life is paramount, nobody actually harmed that woman. The neighborhood and the doctor can all testify to that. Besides, they’re outsiders, and such characters shouldn’t be allowed to run rampant in our place!" Lian Manman said.
Hearing Lian Manman’s tone, Lady Li and Lian Yeye felt as if she wanted to intervene in this matter and couldn’t help but look at Lian Manman.
"Sister Manman, do you want to get involved in this?" Lian Yeye quickly asked.
Lian Manman nodded again.
"If I didn’t know, that’s one thing. But now that I do, I wouldn’t feel comfortable if I didn’t do something," Lian Manman said, then called Shan Xi in and instructed him to go to the front to find Wu Lang.
"When the road is uneven, someone has to tread it. It’s okay to involve ourselves in this matter; it’s also a good deed." Lady Li said happily.
Shan Xi left for a while and soon returned, Wu Lang came along too. Wu Lang entered the room, saluted Lady Li, Lian Yeye quickly got off the ground to greet him, and Lian Manman invited Wu Lang to sit on a chair.
"I already heard about this in the front." Wu Lang said.
As it turned out, the matter had spread throughout Thirty Mile Camp, everyone knew about it, and when Wu Lang returned, Master Qu had explained it to him in detail. Additionally, some tenant farmers from West Village, who leased land from Lian Manman’s family, had also urged Manman’s family’s steward to plead with Lian Shouxin and Wu Lang.
"I’ve already sent someone to investigate, and if it’s true, we’ll certainly intervene in this matter. Those two scoundrels cannot be let off easily," Wu Lang said.
Lady Li nodded repeatedly, looking at Wu Lang with relief.
"The Yang Family isn’t one of our tenant farmers, but this matter is special. I’ve already sent some money over to help them with the funeral, as a gesture of goodwill among neighbors," Wu Lang added.
Lian Manman’s family had a rule that if their tenant farmers faced difficulties or had major life events like weddings or funerals, they would be financially supported according to protocol. Over the years, this expenditure wasn’t insignificant. Lian Manman felt that this expense was more practical than donating to various temples and more helpful to those in need.
"This is very good," Lian Manman nodded and said.
After discussing the main issue, Wu Lang chatted with Lady Li for a while before heading back to the front.
"Wu Lang is now speaking and acting like an adult," Lady Li remarked emotionally. "When he marries a wife in the future, it will all depend on her to support and manage the household. Your mother has something to rely on for the rest of her life."
A good grandson is the blessing of one’s daughter, and Lady Li was genuinely happy.
Unexpectedly, this incident had cut off the previous topic of conversation. Seeing that Lian Yeye’s mood had improved and knowing that the eagerness of Lian Shouli and Lady Zhao to bear children had subsided, Lian Manman thought it was good not to return to that topic.
Lady Li had rested well, so Lian Manman and Lian Yeye accompanied her to Lady Zhang’s room. Lady Zhang and Lady Zhao received them, and everyone sat together again, continuing their conversation.
