"Is there such a thing?!" Lian Manman said with some surprise.
"Oh my!" Lady Zhang exclaimed, wanting to say something but ultimately closed her mouth without saying a word.
Lian Shouyi got into a scuffle with Luo Xiaoyan and ended up being thrown down by her. From the perspective of propriety and traditional views, this wasn’t a good thing in any aspect. That’s why Lady Zhang chose to remain silent, unsure of what to say.
However, Lian Yeye found this quite amusing, and neither Lady Li nor Lady Zhao seemed to mind. As for Lian Manman, she didn’t think it was a big deal either. It was Lian Shouyi who acted improperly first. To subdue someone with his temperament and character, using some unusual methods was justifiable.
Luo Xiaoyan wasn’t the one who initiated the attack on Lian Shouyi. If she had been pushed down by Lian Shouyi and didn’t dare to fight back, Lian Manman would have thought she was useless.
"It’s absolutely true," Lian Yeye said. "Now everyone treats it like a joke, it’s spread, and everyone knows about it."
"Some of the rumors are outrageous," Lady Li said. "Erlang’s wife even came over to me specifically, telling me about what happened that day. It was that her father-in-law reached out to push her. She was worried he’d start gambling with others again, so she pushed back in a rush. Her father-in-law couldn’t keep his balance and fell."
"How did the rumors get outrageous?" Lian Manman asked.
"...In the end, some people said Erlang’s wife publicly thrashed her father-in-law, beat him so badly that he couldn’t get out of bed and lay there for several days!" Lady Li explained to Lian Manman.
"Second Master, is he really bedridden?" Lady Zhang asked anxiously upon hearing this.
"We all say he’s faking it," Lian Yeye replied.
Lady Zhao nodded in agreement with Lian Yeye’s words.
"After this happened, it’s said that Second Master went home and lay in bed, unable to get up, claiming he was seriously hurt. He wanted a doctor to treat his injuries and buy medicine. When we heard about it, Yeye’s father went to Luo Family Village to see him," Lady Zhao said. "Yeye’s father came back and told us that Second Master was lying in bed, groaning and moaning. Even after calling a doctor, there was nothing wrong to be found. Second Master said everything hurt, and he made Erlang’s wife spend money to buy him ointments. He even claimed he had injuries to his muscles and bones and wanted to eat chicken and meat with bones..."
"The first ones to say Erlang’s wife beat her father-in-law badly were your Second Master’s family. Those who followed the rumors were either far away and didn’t know the details or weren’t decent people. Some who saw it firsthand said their account matched Erlang’s wife’s exactly," Lady Li commented.
"This incident caused quite a stir. Second Master even had someone bring Erlang back, claiming Erlang’s wife beat him and demanding Erlang divorce her," Lady Zhao added.
Lady Li, Lady Zhao, and Lian Yeye knew a lot about the incident, and they took turns explaining it to Lady Zhang and Lian Manman, which quickly brought Lian Manman up to speed on what transpired.
Lian Shouyi was caught by Luo Xiaoyan trying to gamble. He attempted to push her but was instead thrown down, losing both face and dignity. He couldn’t stay at the gambling den anymore and returned to Luo Family Village.
However, with Lian Shouyi’s temperament, he wasn’t about to let this go. He simply lay in bed, pretending he was seriously injured by Luo Xiaoyan. On one hand, he wanted to force Luo Xiaoyan to spend money on his treatment and buy him ointments and good food. On the other hand, he hoped Erlang would divorce Luo Xiaoyan because of this.
A wife hitting her father-in-law, that’s definitely considered rebellious and unfilial. Such a wife, naturally, should be divorced.
Lian Shouyi’s actions were a long time coming. After being restrained and annoyed since moving to Luo Family Village, he finally snapped. He initially moved there excitedly, expecting to be cared for, served, and live freely, doing whatever he pleased without restrictions.
But reality greatly disappointed him. Although he was indeed cared for, it was worlds apart from the life of luxury and indulgence he desired. Not only did no one flatter him, but he also lost his freedom, feeling more constrained than when living under Lady Zhou’s watchful eye back at Thirty Mile Camp.
Lian Shouyi was unwilling to accept this. Even if Luo Xiaoyan hadn’t thrown him down this time, he would have sooner or later found an excuse to stir up trouble.
