Chapter 395: The Wicked Are Punished by the Wicked
Under Melody Summers’s questioning, Maisie Lynch haltingly told her what had happened the previous night.
Last night, Titus Lowell and his men had burst into 1602. Before they even started making threats, Ivan Warren had immediately and decisively chosen to grovel.
Not only did Ivan Warren kowtow and beg the three of them for mercy, but he also voluntarily handed over all his money. Even more outrageously, he offered up his own wife, Maisie Lynch, to be their slave, all in exchange for them letting him live.
Thanks to Ivan Warren’s "sensible" choice, the three Lowell brothers achieved their goal effortlessly.
They took Ivan Warren’s money, moved the supplies from 1602, and then tied up Maisie Lynch and carried her to 1603.
However, even though Ivan Warren had been so submissive and cooperative, the three Lowell brothers still didn’t let him go.
Titus Lowell figured that a man who could be so cold and heartless to his own wife must be a malicious and vicious person.
Even a pure villain like Titus Lowell was repulsed by someone like that. If they let him live, he would surely become a major liability down the road.
So, last night, Titus Lowell and his men knocked Ivan Warren out and threw his unconscious body out the window.
After a full day and night in the freezing cold, Ivan Warren had long since become a human ice sculpture.
After hearing Maisie Lynch’s account, Melody Summers couldn’t muster an ounce of sympathy for Ivan Warren.
She just felt it proved the old saying: it takes a villain to bring down another villain.
A man like Ivan Warren, who had previously used his status as a Rhodes employee to harass women, would now even sell out his own wife to save his skin.
Keeping a person like that alive was just a waste of the nation’s disaster relief supplies.
’It’s a shame, though. Ivan Warren still had volunteer work to do at The Metropolis Residences. I guess he got off easy...’
Melody Summers looked at Maisie Lynch’s desolate expression and was at a loss for words.
She looked down at Maisie Lynch and asked irritably, "So what’s your plan now? Don’t tell me you’re planning to die for him?"
’That’s a real possibility.’
Maisie Lynch had been so infatuated with Ivan Warren that she’d been willing to drop out of a prestigious university to go home and have his child.
Even when he became abusive, she still went ahead and officially married him.
’Maisie Lynch is so blinded by love, it’s like she’s been cursed. She’s definitely the type to kill herself over a man.’
At this thought, Melody Summers clicked her tongue. She shot Maisie Lynch a sidelong glance and said in a low voice, "If you’re planning on dying for him, go back to 1602. Just don’t do it here."
Melody Summers silently added, ’Just don’t die in my apartment. That would be a jinx.’
But to her surprise, Maisie Lynch just shook her head.
Before yesterday, Maisie Lynch might have actually died for Ivan Warren.
But then she remembered how Ivan Warren had treated her the night before.
To save his own life, he had offered her up to three thugs. He’d even told them she was just some hanger-on, a free maid they could mess with however they wanted.
After a brush with death, even someone as blinded by love as Maisie Lynch had to have come to her senses.
She was filled with a regret so deep it was painful. She felt that her entire life for the past several years had been a complete joke.
At this thought, Maisie Lynch’s eyes reddened as she looked at Melody Summers, her gaze full of remorse.
Her voice trembling, she murmured, "I regret it... Melody, you were right. I was wrong... All these years, I’ve been so wrong..."
As Melody Summers watched in mild surprise, tears streamed down Maisie Lynch’s face. She choked out, "I know it’s too late to say this now... You were right. I chose the wrong path from the very beginning. Ivan Warren wasn’t worth it. If only I’d listened to you..."
Melody Summers watched Maisie Lynch in silence, her heart a whirlwind of complicated emotions as she listened to the tearful confession.
After a moment of silence, Melody Summers said awkwardly, "Okay, that’s enough. As long as you’ve figured things out and aren’t planning on dying for him, that’s what matters. Otherwise, I would’ve saved you for nothing..."
Melody Summers then bent down to help Maisie Lynch to her feet. "Alright... Get up. It’s too cold out here. You should head back."
Maisie Lynch staggered to her feet, her expression vacant for a moment.
She didn’t know what to do next, nor did she know where to go.
Her life had always been firmly in Ivan Warren’s control; she did whatever he told her to. Now that he was dead, she felt completely lost.
Melody Summers saw the vacant look in Maisie Lynch’s eyes and sighed internally. "Don’t worry," she said. "You and Ivan Warren were legally married. Now that he’s dead, his assets are yours by right. You can stay in 1602 without any trouble."
’The only useful thing Ivan Warren ever did for Maisie was marrying her before he died. Otherwise, she really could have ended up homeless.’
Melody Summers paused, then continued, "In a bit, take your and Ivan Warren’s two shares of supplies back with you. Two shares should be enough to last you a while. If you run into any more trouble, contact the property management."
’The security and supply distribution at The Metropolis Residences are decent. As long as Maisie doesn’t do anything reckless, she should be able to survive on her own.’
Maisie Lynch listened intently to Melody’s advice, nodding along and committing every word to memory. She knew that Melody was already going above and beyond by even telling her this much.
Thinking of her past behavior, Maisie Lynch suddenly felt a prickling in her nose, and her heart ached with overwhelming regret.
Overcome with shame and guilt, she suddenly fell to her knees with a THUD right in front of Melody Summers!
To Melody Summers’s alarm, Maisie Lynch cried, "Thank you for saving me, Melody. I’m so sorry for everything I did before... I was jealous of you... But you were always so good to me. I shouldn’t have been jealous, and I definitely shouldn’t have helped others try to hurt you. I don’t deserve you being so good to me..."
Maisie Lynch continued to ramble on with her confession, but Melody Summers wasn’t listening to a word of it.
She frantically pulled Maisie Lynch to her feet, frowning. "Don’t pull this with me! It’s the last thing I want to see... Get up, now!"
After finally managing to calm Maisie Lynch down, the two of them went into the living room.
Melody Summers had Maisie Lynch start moving her and Ivan Warren’s supplies back to her apartment, while she went to look for Joyce Lawson’s mother and brother.
Finally, in the master bathroom of 1603, Melody Summers found the mother and son, Yvonne York and Gregory Lawson.
Their hands and feet were bound, and they had been carelessly tossed onto the bathroom floor.
Melody didn’t disturb them. After confirming that they were both still alive, she quietly left the master bedroom.
After Maisie Lynch finished moving her supplies and left, Melody Summers took the unconscious Leopold Lowell into her space and ended his life.
Then, she took out her phone and sent a message to Joyce Lawson:
"Joyce, I’ve taken care of the thugs in 1603. It’s safe to come out now. Can you come over to 1603? Your mom and brother are here. Do you want to come get them?"
Not long after she sent the message, Joyce Lawson arrived.
