Chapter 206: Epilogue

The afternoon sun was warm and golden over the sprawling backyard of the Keith mansion. This wasn’t the cold, sterile villa in California or the dark, snowy halls of Moscow. This was home. The grass was a perfect, deep green, and long tables were covered in bright blue tablecloths and silver balloons.

In the center of it all was a large banner that read: HAPPY 3RD BIRTHDAY, THEODORE!

They had changed his name from Mateo. It was a fresh start, a way to wash away the last traces of the Volkov shadow. To everyone here, he was Theo—a happy, energetic boy who spent most of the afternoon chasing a golden retriever puppy across the lawn. He had Fiona’s hazel eyes and Nathan’s stubborn chin, but today, he just had a face full of chocolate cake.

Fiona stood on the patio, watching him with a peaceful smile. She looked healthy, her hair long and shining, the haunted look in her eyes finally gone. She felt a pair of strong arms wrap around her waist from behind. She leaned back into Nathan’s chest, smelling the familiar scent of his cologne and the fresh air.

"He’s having the time of his life, cupcake," Nathan whispered, kissing the top of her head. He was fully recovered now, though he moved with a slight, rugged grace that showed he had survived a war. He was clean-shaven, looking exactly like the man Fiona had fallen for all those years ago.

"He is," Fiona agreed, turning in his arms to look at him. "I can’t believe it’s been a year since we brought him home. Sometimes I still have to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming in that room in Russia."

"You’re not dreaming," Nathan said, his voice deep and sure. "This is real. We’re real."

The party was full of the people who had fought to bring them together. Gabriel Keith, Nathan’s father, stood near the grill, talking loudly with Duncan Brown. The two older men had become unlikely friends, bonded by the shared guilt of how they had handled their families in the past. Gabriel was finally acting like a father instead of a CEO, and Duncan looked lighter, as if a massive weight had been lifted from his soul.

Nearby, Valerie sat on a garden bench. To everyone’s shock, she was there. After Duncan had stripped her of her power and exposed Catherine’s crimes, Valerie had suffered a total breakdown. She had spent months in a quiet retreat, and when she emerged, the cold, sharp woman was gone. She had begged Fiona for forgiveness on her knees, and while things were still quiet between them, Fiona had allowed her to come. Valerie spent most of her time now helping Hannah with the decorations, trying to be the mother she had never been.

"Look at Caleb," Fiona giggled, nodding toward the drink station.

Caleb was hovering near the lemonade, looking uncharacteristically nervous. He was talking to Ella, Fiona’s best friend, who had flown in for the party. Ella looked stunning in a yellow sundress, her laughter ringing out across the yard. Her brother, Julian, stood nearby, chatting with some of Nathan’s security team, but his eyes kept darting back to make sure his sister was okay.

Caleb had held a crush on Ella for years, and now that the chaos had settled, he was finally trying to make his move. He handed her a drink, his ears turning slightly red when she brushed his hand.

"He’s going to trip over his own feet if she keeps smiling at him like that," Nathan joked.

Hannah ran past them, her arms full of gift bags. "Theo! Theo, it’s time for the piñata!" she squealed. She had been the one to pick out the American name for the boy, saying he looked like a "Theodore" from the moment she saw him.

The group gathered around the large oak tree. Duncan stood next to Valerie, and for the first time, he reached out and took her hand. It wasn’t the fake, forced marriage they’d had for years; it was a quiet, repentant partnership. They had lost Catherine to a twenty-year prison sentence, but they had gained a grandson and a second chance at being a family.

Fiona watched as Theo swung a plastic bat at a colorful donkey. On the third swing, the candy exploded everywhere. The kids scrambled for the treats, and Theo came running back to Fiona with a handful of lollipops, his face lit up with pure, uncomplicated joy.

"For you, Mama!" he chirped, thrusting a red one toward her.

Fiona knelt down and hugged him tight, her eyes stinging with happy tears. She looked up and saw the whole circle—the Keiths, her father, her reformed stepmother, and her best friends. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

The story had started with a "fake" date and ended in a real war, but as the sun began to set over the hills, Fiona knew the fighting was finally over. The "Viktoria" nightmare was a closed book, and the "Cupcake" who had been a victim was now a woman who had won her life back.

"I love you, Nathan," she whispered as he pulled them both into a hug.

"I love you more, Fiona," he replied.

They stood there in the center of the yard, surrounded by the people who loved them, watching their son play. The fair might have been where they started, but this was where they belonged.

THE END.

A Note from the Author

As I type these final words, my heart is so full. I want to say a huge, warm thank you to every single one of you who stood by this clumsy story of mine from the very first page until the very end.

When I started writing about Nathan and Fiona, I didn’t know where their journey would take us, there were times when the plot felt messy, and times when the characters struggled to find their way, but you all stayed with me through every twist.

Thank you for being patient with my writing and for loving these characters as much as I do.

Your support turned this "clumsy" story into something special.

Until the next story, thank you for reading!
