Roadmap to the Boundless Sky
Chapter 316Book 3, : Before The Rift
Yu Lie arrived in front of a cavalryman and threw a punch at a dragon-nose horse’s stomach. The refined force went straight through the horse’s body and into the cavalryman.
He ignored the cavalryman after throwing this punch and went to do the same to another surviving one. Whenever he passed by a horse, he would either smack it or punch it, leaving behind a series of loud thuds in his wake.
The cavalrymen froze for a moment before falling down with their horses. They were dead the moment they hit the ground.
In just the span of a breath, the cavalry unit, including the captain, had died.
Chen Bitong had not moved once. He just watched everything calmly.
Yu Lie cast a glance at the gap and feigned an air of relaxation as he asked, “The propagated offspring is inside, isn’t it? Won’t the other side use it to control the gap?”
“Don’t worry. This might look like a gap, but it’s really just a rift that’s an intersection of three channels. The propagated offspring hides in the space between the two worlds, which are two of the channels I mentioned. If the people from the royal family were to come to this place through this rift, the rift will only connect the two worlds together. It will stop doing so when they stop coming,” Fang Zhixin pointed out.
“What should we do next? Wait for them here? That should have been their vanguard, no? If their vanguard doesn’t come back with a message that it’s safe, will they still come?” Yu Lie asked as he looked at the rift.
Fang Zhixin stared at the rift and said seriously, “They won’t give up on this stable rift. They’ll organize their forces and charge out all at once. What we need to do is stop those trying to cross through this rift.”
Yu Lie couldn’t quite understand what they were doing. If they were just going to stop them, why should they do it at all?
But Yu Lie was supposed to be someone who didn’t like digging into the truth and what was going on. If he asked anything else, he would be breaking character, so he squashed down his desire for answers and said nonchalantly, “Guess we’ll just have to kill all those who come out.”
Fang Zhixin cast him a glance. “I’m not just talking about the ones coming out from the rift. We’re going to be fighting against those behind us too.”
“The same,” Yu Lie said stubbornly and grinned.
A gunshot came from the distance. Shocked, Yu Lie turned around to look.
Chen Bitong had his hand in a clenched fist. When he unfurled his fingers, Yu Lie heard a clatter, and a nearly ten-millimeter-long sniper bullet fell on the ground.
He looked over, and a group of people was walking toward them.
“Stop wasting your energy. You’re standing within his biofield. From the moment you stepped into it, he knew everything that you were going to do,” Lao Hu said into his Realm Pass.
The sniper hiding on the roof checked the distance. He was at least three hundred meters away. Could a human even have such a large biofield?
Lao Hu stared at the area ahead and said, “Don’t go doubting what I say. We’re talking about Chen Bitong here.”
Then, he said to the mercenaries behind him, “If you want to be paid, do your job.”
Even if the mercenaries had seen Chen Bitong grab a bullet with his bare hand, they showed no signs of retreating. “Of course. We obey the rules.”
Lao Hu said nothing else and just made a motion for A’Han and the four men to follow him. Then, he walked fearlessly to where Chen Bitong was.
When they arrived in front of him, Chen Bitong said, “I wasn’t expecting you, Lao Hu. It’s been five years since we last met. Have you joined the National Ad Hoc Special Operations Committee?”
“It’s the same wherever I go,” Lao Hu answered hoarsely. Then, he pulled off his gloves and retrieved a document from his breast pocket.
“In the name of the National Ad Hoc Special Operations Committee, I will hereby arrest Chen Bitong on suspicions of betraying the country. Chen Bitong, are you going to follow me on your own, or do I need to attack you?”
“If that’s what you want to do, attack,” Chen Bitong said grimly.
Lao Hu stared at him coldly for a while, but didn’t do anything rash.
He had been part of the development squad along with Chen Bitong, and he knew just how strong Chen Bitong was. It had been five years since then, and Chen Bitong had become even more famous. Even though Lao Hu had gotten stronger himself, the current Chen Bitong was different from the one he knew.
He gave a signal, and the four men Mr. Chu had assigned to him charged forward without hesitation.
Gunshots came from the buildings beside them. The people Chen Bitong had stationed in the area started acting, but the four men had protective gear on, so all they needed to do was bring their arms up to protect their heads.
When Yu Lie saw Lao Hu and the four men, he knew that the committee had arrived, and his heart finally felt at ease. But this wasn’t the time for him to reveal his true identity, so he pretended to charge over to fight, but Fang Zhixin stopped him.
“That’s Instructor Chen’s old friend. Instructor Chen can handle him on his own.”
While Fang Zhixin was talking, the fight started. The four men threw a punch at Chen Bitong, but none of them hit him.
The one closest to him was half a meter away from Chen Bitong, but his fist froze in the air, because he had completely missed.
This was a strange sight. They had thrown their punches in the right direction and Chen Bitong hadn’t moved, but they missed, as if they had misjudged where he was.
That wasn’t all. The four men swayed, as if all their strength had been drained from their bodies, and collapsed.
Lao Hu saw it clearly. This was the effect of a mental attack. Chen Bitong had caused their senses to go out of sync and made them think that their punches would reach him.
Due to him luring them into action with his mind, the four men had used all their strength for the attack. They had even activated all their blood essence. In the end, not only did they suffer from massive internal damage, but they also fainted once all their strength was drained.
Once a martial artist’s mind and body reached perfection, they could use either mental energy or physical body to overpower another martial artist who hadn’t reached perfection in both areas. Chen Bitong didn’t have any weaknesses in those areas.
Lao Hu stared at Chen Bitong long and hard, but didn’t attack. Instead, he said, “You go, A’Han.”
A’Han walked forward without hesitation and yanked off his overcoat, revealing a body covered in scales and well-defined muscles.
He bared his teeth at Chen Bitong to threaten him. His mouth was full of sharp fangs, and his pupils were round, just like those of a feline. Clearly, he had received full body implants.
His exposed muscles looked so strong that it was intimidating, but when he stepped forward, he gave off a nimble feeling. This meant that his coordination was good, and he wasn’t slow either.
He stared at Chen Bitong for a while before the center of his brow twitched, as if he was on guard against something. Once he was certain of whatever it was that he was looking out for, he made a quick diagonal dash. He moved so quickly that even Fang Zhixin and Yu Lie couldn’t catch his movements.
After arriving beside Chen Bitong, he lunged forward. Before he came close, tentacles spread out from behind him. He swung them forward and bound Chen Bitong.
Upon sensing that he had touched the real deal, delight rose in his heart, and he tightened his grip. Then, he brought his hand up, and sharp claws went straight for Chen Bitong’s face.
Before they could land, he found out why Chen Bitong wasn’t bothered about being bound. With just a lift of his arm, the sturdy tentacles snapped like feeble twigs. Then, two fingers touched the center of A’Han’s brow. The next instant, he heard something cracking.
Right before everyone’s eyes, a bloody hole was blasted open in the back of his head, and the implanted tissue as well as interstitial fluid shot out.
The huge body fell backward with limbs spread out. A continuous series of snaps and pops came from every part of A’Han’s body. The sounds made it clear that those parts had been twisted by or burst by some force.
“The Void String Force?” Lao Hu looked away from A’Han’s spasming body and turned to Chen Bitong. “Do you know who he is? Do you remember Lao Chai? He was your subordinate and blocked a spear attack for you with his body. A’Han was his son.”
Chen Bitong was silent for a while before saying, “I saw him once when he was a child.”
Lao Hu kept his eyes trained on Chen Bitong. “How does it feel to kill a comrade’s son, especially the one who saved you with his life?”
Fang Zhixin took a few steps forward. “Chai Zihan often bullied and tortured his subordinates while serving at the World Ring Defense System. He also stole their credit.
“Once, when he learned that a team member complained about him to the higher-ups, he killed them and slandered them for attacking him with a gun because of being displeased. Afterward, the Internal Affairs Department confiscated all that team member’s compensation.
“Even so, Chai Zihan refused to spare the team member’s wife and children. He ordered people to burn them. Shouldn’t scum like that deserve death?”
“Don’t you care about the friendship with your former comrades at all?” Lao Hu asked.
“Even if he attacked me again, I’d still kill him,” Chen Bitong declared.
Lao Hu sneered. Just then, he noticed something and looked over at the rift. It had flickered.
Yu Lie was the closest to the rift. When he noticed something off about it, he turned around. Then, he saw something charging out.
With a shout, he pushed forward to try and stop it, but the moment he touched it, his expression changed. The impact from the thing’s charge was too strong, and it made him tremble.
Even so, he gritted his teeth and endured.
But it was useless. The thing continued trying to charge out of the rift. Yu Lie couldn’t do anything to stop it.
The thing’s entire body was soon revealed. It was a three-meter tall beetle with its entire body covered by a metallic shell. As it continued pushing forward, Yu Lie was finally unable to endure. The beetle’s overbearing strength sent him tumbling to the side.
The beetle went charging at Chen Bitong, who was standing in its path.
Chen Bitong showed no intention of moving. The beetle charged through him with rumbling footsteps, but felt no resistance, as if it had encountered an illusion. Instead, it went straight for Lao Hu.
With a cold gaze, Lao Hu brought a hand up and pressed two fingers together. Once his hand was raised to a certain degree, he swung it down.
A crimson light cut through the air. In an instant, the beetle was sliced cleanly in half from top to bottom. The inertia made it continue running forward. Once it was a little further away, it toppled in half.
The tissue in its body was all burnt. Meanwhile, Lao Hu’s expression was unreadable, since it was hidden behind the mask. The tips of his fingers were red, and wisps of hot air came off them.
