Rotting Land: Survive
Chapter 693 - 682: Mutual Exploitation (7)
At around noon, just as Huang Yong was leaving his room to serve Liu Fugui’s lunch, he was stopped at the door by his subordinate.
His subordinate reported with a strange expression that he saw Liu Yunpeng carrying a basket of food into He Lei’s room. This immediately aroused Huang Yong’s suspicion, who had initially been a bit irritated for being blocked.
Liu Yunpeng and He Lei, two people who have absolutely no connection, suddenly meeting together couldn’t help but capture Huang Yong’s attention. He hurriedly turned back into his room and opened the surveillance equipment, but besides static, he couldn’t hear a damn thing.
The other side must have used some kind of jamming device, that damned He Lei.
Needless to say, with Liu Yunpeng’s idiot level of intelligence, there’s no way he would think of jamming the signal. Only the experienced He Lei would do such a thing.
The bizarre behavior of the two further deepened Huang Yong’s doubts. What on earth could make the usually laid-back He Lei care so much?
Huang Yong was desperate to go to the room and interrogate them clearly, but having to accompany Liu Fugui for the meal, he had to order his men to monitor them secretly and report to him afterward.
Liu Fugui always ate leisurely and slowly, so naturally, this took a lot of time. Huang Yong’s mind was full of scenes of He Lei and Liu Yunpeng meeting, and Liu Fugui, being who he was, quickly noticed Huang Yong’s odd behavior.
Without betraying any thoughts, Liu Fugui asked Huang Yong what was troubling him. Huang Yong didn’t answer truthfully this time; he pieced together some random reasons and brushed him off.
After all, without a clear conclusion on matters, expressing his concerns might just appear too petty.
After sending Liu Fugui back to his room post-lunch, Huang Yong found an excuse and left. Upon leaving the room, he went straight to the floor where He Lei was located. At the corridor’s corner, the subordinate he had ordered was dutifully keeping watch.
Learning that Liu and He were still inside the room without stepping out, Huang Yong became even more puzzled. Considered from any angle—age, personality, or relationship—these two wouldn’t possibly have so much to talk about. So what exactly were they hiding in the room for? And why did Liu Yunpeng bring food to He Lei’s room out of the blue?
Strange, this matter is truly strange. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Huang Yong sent his subordinate away, then stood at the end of the corridor with a cigarette, pretending to smoke but actually trying to see what would make the two leave the room.
Time ticked by quickly, but to Huang Yong, his Tissot watch’s hand seemed to be moving unusually slowly. He had almost finished smoking more than half a pack, but the door to the room ahead remained tightly closed, showing no signs of opening.
His legs gradually began to feel numb, just as Huang Yong was about to give up and return to his room to rest, Liu Yunpeng came out. From analyzing Liu Yunpeng’s action of looking up at the ceiling, Huang Yong felt that the visit to He Lei was likely not just for a meal.
The fact that Liu Yunpeng didn’t notice him along the way further solidified his thoughts.
Surely, Liu Yunpeng came to consult He Lei on something. But what exactly? It seems like the only way to find out is to go to the kitchen and inquire with Liu Shi.
Huang Yong was quite clever. When he saw the basket Liu Yunpeng was carrying filled with plates and bowls, he thought of Liu Shi. Making this connection wasn’t hard; for someone like Liu Yunpeng, who’s used to being waited on hand and foot, cooking was an impossible task. And the only person at the Factory responsible for food for the Liu Family was Liu Shi. Thus, it was necessary to ask him if anything valuable could be gleaned to unravel the reason for the meeting of the two.
Liu Shi felt like the sun rose in the west today, as he met both Liu Yunpeng and Huang Yong early in the morning, coming to find him one after the other, which was unusual.
Though he wasn’t of low esteem or position within the group, he was, after all, just a cook. No one would normally bother coming to the kitchen for no reason.
But today was indeed unusual. Not only did Liu Yunpeng come to ask him to cook, but even Huang Yong, the current rising star in the Factory, came to his kitchen. He couldn’t fathom their intentions.
"Xiao Huang, what brings you here? Did Mr. Liu have some instructions?"
In the group, Huang Yong was usually addressed as Mr. Huang or Brother Yong, or by his name, so being addressed as Xiao Huang by Liu Shi caught him off guard for a moment: "Oh, no, Old Liu, Mr. Liu didn’t have any instructions. It’s just that I haven’t seen the young master go to the dining hall for lunch yet, so I came to ask if he came to you for food."
"Yunpeng? He did come!" Liu Shi, unaware of Huang Yong’s real intentions to pry, genuinely thought Huang Yong was concerned about Liu Yunpeng’s dining and replied earnestly: "He mentioned feeling a bit unwell at noon and asked me to prepare some dishes for him to take back to his room."
Huang Yong frowned: "You’re saying the young master himself ordered the dishes from you and took them back to his room?"
"He didn’t order the dishes, I just prepared some casually. I even made a mixed fish pot for him, but unfortunately, Yunpeng felt unwell and didn’t take it. Why, did something happen?" Liu Shi, seeing Huang Yong suddenly serious, became nervous.
"Oh, no, it’s nothing. I’m just a bit concerned hearing the young master is unwell." Huang Yong put on a fake, caring smile, which Liu Shi took as genuine and even tried to comfort him: "Xiao Huang, don’t worry. From Yunpeng’s complexion, it doesn’t seem like a big issue. If you’re really concerned, get a doctor to check him out and prescribe some medicine."
"Alright then, Old Liu, I won’t disturb your work here anymore." Huang Yong pointed at the plates and bowls being delivered in succession: "You’re busy, I’ll leave first."
Stepping out of the kitchen, Huang Yong furrowed his eyebrows again. Liu Shi’s words made him certain that Liu Yunpeng didn’t go to He Lei’s room just to eat.
If he didn’t have something up his sleeve, why would he lie to Liu Shi about a stomachache, claim he was eating in his room, yet actually go to He Lei’s place? It seems his painstaking effort in arranging this was likely to ally with He Lei.
Heh, Huang Yong laughed at the thought. Aligning himself with He Lei was akin to plotting with a tiger; although Huang Yong didn’t take He Lei, who lacked brains despite his brawn, seriously, it still didn’t mean He Lei was useless.
Since He Lei managed to attain a position equivalent to his in the group, gaining Liu Fugui’s favor to become his right-hand man, he must have some inherent advantages. And these advantages aren’t something Liu Yunpeng can handle.
Considering the disparity between their capabilities, Huang Yong’s previously unsettled mind was now at ease.
While three cobblers may equal one Zhuge Liang, the current two together were nothing but a "two," hardly capable of stirring up any storm.
I’ll just let you continue on and see what kind of marvel you can muster up together. (To be continued. If you like this work, you’re welcome to cast recommendation votes, monthly votes on Qidian (qidian.com). Your support is my biggest motivation. Mobile users please visit m.qidian.com to read.)
