Sequence Highway Survival: I Upgrade Supplies in the Apocalypse
Chapter 507: Even if I die, I’ll die here.
The wind scattered the mist between the mountains.
When everyone could finally see the bridge’s end with their own eyes, they also got a clear look at what this bridge actually was.
Many people’s hearts nearly stopped the moment they glanced down.
Earlier, unable to see below, they could only guess the bridge hung terrifyingly high above the ground.
But since they couldn’t actually see it, there was at least some comfort in ignorance.
Now, though, they could see it clearly.
This bridge was suspended between two peaks, and looking down from the bridge surface, the drop was at least a thousand meters.
No, actually, it wasn’t two peaks.
One side had a peak, while the other side was just a sheer cliff.
That cliff was the old world the convoy was trying to reach.
On the cliff ahead, aside from the cross-section revealing the earth’s natural color, everything else was lush and green.
The mountain behind them was all yellow earth and rocks.
That mountain seemed to exist solely for this bridge.
This was a bridge that shouldn’t have existed in this world.
By normal logic, a bridge this long built entirely from wood...
It was simply inconceivable.
If anyone had said this before the apocalypse, everyone would’ve thought the guy had fried his brain.
No type of wood could possibly be the building material for such a bridge.
Yet here it stood, defying all reason.
This bridge was like... like someone had rushed the job, deliberately cutting corners.
“Everyone listen up, don’t look down! Don’t look down! Don’t look down! We’re almost there!”
Xue Nan’s voice rang out at just the right time.
Everyone lifted their pale faces and saw the cliff scene on the other side.
Unlike the yellow earth and rock mountain they’d come from.
This side was covered in green vegetation.
In the distance, they could even see some gray-black buildings.
The silhouette of a human city.
Hope flooded back into everyone’s hearts.
“Move out, move out!”
“We’re almost there!”
“Waaah... finally... finally almost there!”
These voices filled the convoy.
The convoy resumed its migration journey.
But this time, their speed was much faster.
No one paid attention to how many people that wind had cost the convoy.
Chen Ye glanced at the rearview mirror.
At some point, Iron Lion had already positioned himself at the back of the convoy, his four arms gripping the willow branches of the Binding Resentment Willow as he hauled up several pale-faced individuals. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
The earlier gale hadn’t stopped the bridge surface from disappearing.
It had only slowed the rate of its vanishing.
The people at the very back of the convoy were the first to be swept into the wind as the bridge surface vanished.
How many had been lost? No one knew for sure.
For those who fell off the bridge, their only chance at survival was those willow branches.
Anyone who had managed to grab a willow branch and hold on till now had lived.
Those who hadn’t grabbed one had already been blown who knows where.
The moment Iron Lion rescued these people, they collapsed limply on the bridge surface, unable to move.
Seeing this, Iron Lion had no choice but to carry them forward like cargo.
The kid he’d ordered to stay at the very back earlier—the one suppressing the bridge’s disappearance—was already gone.
He must’ve been swept away by the wind.
Chen Ye didn’t comment on this.
Nor did he feel he’d done anything wrong.
The rate at which the bridge surface disappeared depended on the movement speed of the last person in the convoy.
If not for that kid, the convoy would’ve lost many more people.
Someone had to do it. Since no one was willing to volunteer, someone had to be forced into it.
It wasn’t like they could make a Superhuman do it.
Superhumans had more important matters.
“Help... help me...”
Just then, a weak, trembling voice came through.
Iron Lion paused.
Looking down beneath the bridge, he saw a small figure desperately clinging to a bridge plank, on the verge of slipping off at any moment.
Iron Lion quickly grabbed the guy and pulled him up from underneath the bridge.
“You... you’re alive?”
“The... the wind was too strong. I thought I was... dead too...”
“I held on... to the willow branch for dear life. The wind... threw me under the bridge...”
The small man spoke in broken sentences, as if he’d already lost half his life.
“Good kid! You survived even that—must be your lucky day. What’s your name?”
Iron Lion was delighted, laughing heartily as he slapped the guy’s shoulder.
Those slaps only made the guy’s face turn paler as he said, haltingly, “Monkey... they... they all call me... Monkey!”
“Good! Monkey, I’ll remember that. Hahaha... not bad!”
“You, kid! Come on, follow me!”
Iron Lion laughed, hoisting the guy up and striding forward with heavy steps.
With his massive build and those powerful strides,
the entire bridge started swaying again.
In a few steps, Iron Lion reached the bridge’s end and tossed the people he was carrying onto the grass.
Then he turned around to help the other vehicles get ashore.
The other survivors had also sped up.
As the convoy’s overall speed increased, the bridge surface’s rate of disappearance accelerated.
But getting ashore became another problem.
The convoy was just too heavy.
As they neared the bridge’s end, they faced an uphill slope.
Iron Lion grabbed Bus Number Five’s tow rope and yanked with all his might.
His legs sank deep into the earth.
Bald Old Li, sitting in the driver’s seat, felt the vehicle tremble slightly, and then the whole bus was hauled up by an immense force.
Iron Lion dragged the entire bus ashore.
When Bus Number Five’s front two tires touched solid ground, Bald Old Li let out a huge sigh of relief.
The guy called Monkey had recovered a bit and quickly came over to help.
Even though his strength was insignificant.
But the gesture alone proved he was a smart one.
When everyone’s feet finally stood on solid ground, some people watched the last bit of bridge surface vanish before their eyes.
These people couldn’t help but collapse to the ground, wailing loudly.
The mountain wind carried their cries and sobs far into the distant sky.
Blended with the sound of wind sweeping through grass and trees, it was like a mournful song.
A row of vehicles was parked on the open ground at the bridge’s end, with a battered road stretching into the distance.
Weeds had grown thick on both sides of the road, almost devouring it entirely.
If not for the grayish-white pavement still visible, no one would’ve guessed this had once been a road.
The surrounding area was lush grass and shrubs.
Without human footsteps, the vegetation here had clearly thrived.
That wooden bridge was right at the edge of this cliff.
Chen Ye stood at the cliff’s edge, looking left and right.
The side of the cliff where they stood was lush and green, while the direction the convoy had come from was a desolate yellow-brown.
Even without those terrifying figures,
it still felt deeply unsettling.
As if they simply didn’t belong there.
This terrain gave the impression of two worlds crudely stitched together.
A clumsy patchwork job, resulting in this very cliff.
“Some people said earlier that the Anomalies appeared because of the new world’s arrival.”
“Now there’s even more evidence for that claim.”
Chu Che stood beside Chen Ye, his voice filled with emotion.
“I never want to go back there again!”
Dantai Bie, rarely, only said that one sentence.
Chen Ye let out a mocking laugh. “You think we’re safe just because we’re back in the old world?”
“The Anomalies here aren’t any fewer than over there!”
“In this apocalypse, nowhere is safe for humanity!”
“Then... then at least... this is a place we’re familiar with. Look at those tall buildings in the distance. I know they’re full of nasty things, but... even if I have to die, I’d rather die in a place like this!”
Dantai Bie said stubbornly, craning his neck.
Chen Ye patted Dantai Bie on the shoulder. “You’re right. Even if I have to die, I don’t want to die over there!”
