Chapter 42: Tracking the Founder

The war room was cold. The air conditioning hummed overhead. It was a sharp, mechanical sound. It cut through the silence. Isaac stood at the head of the table. He wore his glasses. They reflected the light from the projector. The screen behind him was black. White text scrolled down. Fast. The crew sat around the table. Dante was at the center. Sophie was to his right.

Kisuke leaned back in his chair. His hand was in his pocket. He touched the drive. The black plastic was cold against his fingers. Lisa typed on her tablet. Her eyes were red. Heavy. Eikichi stood by the door. His arms were crossed. He watched the entrance. Moro sat in the corner. He was cleaning his glasses. He did not look at the screen.

"Three days of analysis," Isaac said. His voice was calm. But there was a tension in his shoulders. "We traced the financials. We traced the communications. We traced the command structure." He clicked a remote. The screen changed. A name appeared. Large. White. Centered. OGATA SETSURO.

"This organization," Isaac continued. "It is called Yoru Kikan." He paused. He let the name settle in the room. "Night Agency."

Lisa looked up from her tablet. Her fingers stopped typing. "Never heard of it," she said.

"Because it does not exist," Isaac said. "Not officially." He clicked the remote again. A map appeared. It showed Japan. Korea. Lines connected the two countries. "They operate beneath the record. No registration. No tax filings. No public presence."

Isaac walked around the table. He stopped behind Dante. "But they are real. And they are old." He pointed to the screen. "They have been intersecting with your operational history for years, Dante."

Dante turned his head. He looked at Isaac. "Explain."

"Operation Blue River. Five years ago. The intel leak that saved you." Isaac tapped the screen. A file opened. "Source unknown. At the time." He tapped again. "Operation Silent Glass. Three years ago. The weapon shipment that vanished before you arrived."

"Source unknown." Isaac looked at Dante. "It was them. Every time."

The room went quiet. The hum of the air conditioner seemed louder. Dante felt a shift in his chest.

Kairo: Pattern recognized. Inefficiency in past missions was not accidental.

Mūn: They were watching. They were guiding.

Dante: Why.

"Why help me," Dante asked.

"Not help," Isaac said. "Steer." He walked back to the head of the table. He leaned against it. "They are not a gang. They are not a syndicate. They are an institution." Isaac looked around the room. He met every eye. "They have reach across borders. Governments turn a blind eye. Police do not investigate." He paused. "Leadership is unknown. Founding is unknown. Motive is unknown."

Kisuke shifted in his chair. The leather creaked. "So we are fighting a ghost," Kisuke said. His voice was light. But the joke fell flat.

"No," Isaac said. "We are fighting a system."

Sophie spoke. Her voice was soft. But it cut through the tension. "And Edward."

"Edward is a contractor," Isaac said. "He is a tool. Not the architect."

Dante stood up. The chair scraped against the floor. "Where is their base," he asked.

"We do not know," Isaac said. "They move. Like smoke."

Dante walked to the screen. He looked at the logo. The black circle. The white crescent. He felt a headache behind his eyes. A sharp spike.

Kairo: Memory fragment triggered. Associative link.

Dante: Show me.

Kairo: Data corrupted. Insufficient power.

Dante: Damn it.

Dante gripped the edge of the table. His knuckles turned white. Sophie saw it. She did not move. But her eyes softened. "Dante," she said.

He let go of the table. He straightened his coat. "Edward knows where they are," Dante said.

"Likely," Isaac said. "But he is not talking."

"He will," Dante said.

"How," Eikichi asked. He spoke for the first time. His voice was gravel.

"We find Ogata," Dante said. "Edward said Ogata is the key."

Isaac nodded. "The clinic in Sector Two was a decoy. But the financial trail leads to a holding company."

"Name," Dante said.

"Setsuro Holdings."

Dante closed his eyes. "Ogata Setsuro."

"Yes."

Dante opened his eyes. They were turquoise. Cold. "Prepare the gear," he said. "We move tonight."

The crew stood up. Chairs pushed back. Boots hit the floor. They moved with efficiency. They did not question. Except Moro. He did not stand. He did not move. He sat in the corner. He held his glasses in his hand. He was not cleaning them anymore. He was still.

Isaac noticed. He stopped packing his tablet. He looked at Moro. "Moro," Isaac said.

Moro did not look up. He put the glasses in his pocket. "Yes," Moro said. His voice was flat. Empty.

"You know the name," Isaac said. It was not a question.

Moro stood up. He pushed the chair back. The legs scraped against the floor. "I know many names," Moro said.

"This one matters."

Moro walked to the side table. He picked up his tools. A scalpel. A syringe. A vial. He did not look at Dante. He did not look at Sophie. "It matters," Moro said.

He turned away from the crew. He walked toward the back of the room.

"Where are you going," Lisa asked.

"To work," Moro said.

"We are briefing," Isaac said.

"I know what we are doing," Moro said. "I do not need to hear it again."

He reached the second table. It was in the shadows. Away from the light. He set his tools down. He began to arrange them. Precisely. The crew watched him. They did not move. They did not speak.

Dante watched him. He saw the tension in Moro’s shoulders. He saw the way his hands trembled. Just slightly.

Kairo: He is hiding data.

Mūn: He is hiding pain.

Dante: There is a difference.

Kairo: Not in this context.

Dante stepped forward. He started to follow. Sophie touched his arm. Her hand was warm. "Let him," she said.

Dante stopped. He looked at her. "He knows something," Dante said.

"Yes," Sophie said. "But he is not ready to say it."

Dante looked back at Moro. Moro was not looking at them. He was looking at the scalpel. "He is lying," Dante said.

"No," Sophie said. "He is protecting."

Dante pulled his arm away. He walked back to the table. "Isaac," Dante said.

"Yes."

"Check the clinic’s staff records. Look for Ogata’s associates."

"I will." Isaac hesitated. He looked at Moro. "But Dante."

Dante looked up.

"Sophie."

"What about her."

"Her training."

Dante looked at the door. It was closed. "Yes," Dante said.

"Who trained her."

"I do not know."

Isaac nodded. He did not push. He knew better. "But I am filing it," Isaac said. "In case it matters."

"It matters," Dante said.

Isaac left the room.

In the hallway, Sophie walked quietly. She reached the corner. She stopped. She leaned against the wall. She closed her eyes. She breathed in. Out. Her hand moved to her pocket. She touched the small device there. A tracker. A jammer. A lockpick. Tools she had carried for years. She had not told Dante. She had not told the crew. Secrets were armor.

She opened her eyes. She pushed off the wall. She walked toward her room. Eikichi stood at the end of the hall. He was cleaning his weapon. He watched her approach. He did not speak. He did not move. But he shifted his stance. Just slightly. He was no longer guarding against her. He was guarding with her.

Sophie passed him. She nodded. Once. Eikichi nodded back. She entered her room. She closed the door. She locked it. She walked to the mirror. She looked at her reflection. She lifted her sleeve. A scar ran down her forearm. Thin. White. From a knife. From a training exercise. From a life she had buried. She let the sleeve fall.

She sat on the bed. She picked up her phone. She dialed a number she had not used in years. It rang. A voice answered. Encrypted.

"Status," the voice said.

"Active," Sophie said.

"Compromised?"

"No."

"Continue."

The line went dead. Sophie put the phone away. She lay back on the bed. She looked at the ceiling. Dante was losing his memories. Edward was hunting them. And Sophie was waiting for the order to wake up. She closed her eyes. She was not just a partner. She was a weapon. And she was ready to fire.
