Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 172: Natsuki Lea’s Backstory III
The first zombies appeared on the horizon, their silhouettes dark against the purplish twilight, a fitting background for a clash. Her heart pounding, Lea gave a resolute nod to her teammates.
"Let’s make this quick." Lea then gestured for Yumi to step forward. Since they were fighting a horde of Aberrants, they had to come up with an efficient strategy so they wouldn’t get overwhelmed by them.
After all, Aberrants couldn’t be underestimated. Most of them had some semblance of human intelligence, and their offensive abilities could rival most Hybrids.
"Yumi, you take the front, I’ll be right beside you. Don’t stray too far from us. Hiroshi, you take care of Yumi’s blind spots. I’ll defend while Akira snipes the Aberrants. Akira, you stay with the Hybrid guards. You’ll be safe with them." Lea gave a flurry of orders as the group moved forward to meet the Aberrants midway.
In response, her team nodded in unison, their faces set with determination. Yumi, a master of stealth and speed, gripped her twin blades, her eyes sharp and focused. Hiroshi, a towering figure with fists like hammers, flexed his powerful arms. Akira, their archer, notched an arrow and took a deep breath, steadying his aim.
The zombies surged forward, their eyes glowing with malevolent hunger, their guttural moans growing louder as they got nearer and nearer. With an exhale that almost emptied her lungs, Lea focused on activating her Bulwark capabilities and her muscles hardened, forming her impenetrable shield. She charged into the fray, her fists smashing into decayed flesh and bone, her movements a blur of power and precision.
Then as for Yumi, she moved like a shadow, darting between the zombies with her blades flashing. Each swing was a lethal arc, severing heads and limbs with surgical precision. Hiroshi’s powerful punches sent zombies flying, their brittle bones shattering under his relentless assault. Akira’s arrows found their marks with deadly accuracy, each shot a precise execution of their unholy foes.
"We can do this," Lea muttered under her breath, watching Yumi’s graceful dance of death.
The battle was fierce, the air filled with the sounds of growls and the clash of steel. Leah and the others fought with all their might, her defensive abilities protecting her team from harm.
Her fists were a whirlwind of destruction, each strike infused with the raw power of her hybrid abilities. She felt the weight of the horde pressing against her, their numbers seemingly endless.
"Hold the line!" Lea shouted in a commanding tone, her voice ringing out over the din of battle. "We can’t let them through!"
Her team rallied with unwavering determination. They fought with everything they had, enduring past their limits as their teamwork became even more streamlined. Slowly, they began to push the horde back, their combined strength proving too much for the undead.
But the horde was relentless, their staggering numbers pushing back at the squad’s forged teamwork.
BAM!
A particularly large zombie, its body grotesquely mutated, barreled towards Lea. She braced herself, her muscles tightening into a defensive barrier. The zombie crashed into her with force nearly knocking her off her feet, but she stood firm, her shield holding strong.
"An Omega Zombie? What is it doing here?" Yumi asked mid-fight.
However, there was no time for anyone to respond to her rhetorical question. With a roar, Lea pushed back, driving her fist into the zombie’s chest with enough force to cave it in. The creature fell, but more took its place, their rotting hands reaching for her. She swung her fists in wide arcs, smashing through their ranks, but for every zombie she felled, it seemed like two more appeared, like a Hydra with its head continuously being decapitated.
Yumi was a blur of motion, her blades slicing through the horde with deadly efficiency. But even she was starting to tire, her movements slowing as the battle dragged on. Hiroshi fought with a fury born of desperation, his powerful blows sending zombies flying, but he, too, was feeling the strain.
"Yumi, on your left!" Lea warned, her voice waning and barely audible over the cacophony of battle.
With a spin, Yumi sliced her blade through the zombie that had been closing in on her. She gave Lea a grateful nod before diving back into the fray. Hiroshi let out a bellowing roar, his fists smashing through the undead with renewed vigor. Akira’s arrows continued to fly, each shot a precise and deadly strike.
It seemed like everybody’s warmed up, but the undead weren’t particularly weakening either. In fact, they seemed to be more coordinated than usual, probably because of the appearance of the Omega Zombie.
Despite their efforts, the horde was relentless. The zombies pressed forward, their sheer numbers threatening to overwhelm the defenders. Lea could feel her muscles straining under the constant barrage, her energy waning with each moment.
"We need to fall back!" Lea called out, her voice strained. "We can’t hold this position much longer!"
Her team responded without hesitation, slowly retreating towards the stronghold’s gates. They fought as they moved, their movements synchronized in a deadly dance of survival. Lea took point, her shield deflecting the blows of the undead, while Yumi and Hiroshi covered the flanks and Akira provided support from the rear.
As they neared the gates, the Omega Zombie, now covered in thick, armored plates, charged towards them. Lea braced herself, her shield raised to absorb the impact. The zombie crashed into her with bone-shattering force, sending her stumbling back.
"Lea!" Yumi shouted, rushing to her side.
Lea shook off the daze, her vision swimming. "I’m fine," she grunted, her voice tinged with pain. "We need to take it down."
Hiroshi stepped forward, his fists clenched. "I’ll handle this," he growled, his voice filled with determination.
He charged at the Omega zombie, his powerful punches striking with the force of a battering ram. The creature staggered under the assault, its armored plates cracking under the relentless blows. Lea and Yumi moved in to support him, their combined efforts wearing down the creature’s defenses.
With a final, earth-shaking punch, Hiroshi shattered the zombie’s armor, sending it crashing to the ground. The team barely had time to catch their breath before more zombies swarmed towards them, their eyes glowing with the thirst for blood.
"Keep moving!" Lea shouted, her voice hoarse. "We can’t let them reach the stronghold!"
They continued their retreat, their movements becoming more desperate as the horde pressed in. Lea’s shield was beginning to falter, the strain of the constant attacks taking its toll. Yumi’s blades were slick with blood, her movements slowing as exhaustion set in.
As for Hiroshi, his punches were losing their strength, and even Akira’s arrows were beginning to run out.
Just as it seemed like they would be overwhelmed, a horn blared from the stronghold’s walls. Reinforcements poured out of the gates, their weapons gleaming in the setting sun. The fresh troops crashed into the horde with a ferocity that matched the zombies’ own, driving them back and giving Lea and her team a much-needed reprieve.
