Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 206: A Broken System
The Merc Hybrid saw his hesitation and grinned, sensing an opportunity. He moved in for the kill, his fists clenched and ready to deliver the final blow.
Kazuichi shook his head, trying to clear the fog that had settled in his mind. He couldn’t let it end like this—not now. He forced himself to focus, drawing on every ounce of willpower he had left.
The Merc Hybrid’s fist came at him like a sledgehammer, aimed squarely at his head. Kazuichi reacted on instinct, ducking low and twisting his body to the side. The punch sailed past him, missing by inches.
"Whoosh!" The air crackled with the force of the missed blow.
Kazuichi knew he had to act fast. Ignoring the strange sensation still lingering in his body, he countered with a low sweep kick, aiming for the Merc Hybrid’s legs.
"Thwack!" The kick connected, and the Merc Hybrid’s legs buckled beneath him. He stumbled, his balance momentarily lost.
Kazuichi seized the opportunity, springing up and delivering a powerful knee strike to the Hybrid’s jaw.
"Crack!" The impact was sharp, and the Merc Hybrid’s head snapped back, his eyes widening in shock.
Kazuichi didn’t stop. He followed up with a series of rapid strikes, his fists and feet moving in a blur. Each hit was aimed with precision, targeting the Hybrid’s weak points.
The Merc Hybrid staggered under the onslaught, his defenses crumbling as Kazuichi pressed the attack. The strange sensation in Kazuichi’s body seemed to fade, replaced by a burning determination to win this fight.
With one final, powerful punch, Kazuichi struck the Merc Hybrid in the chest, sending him crashing to the ground.
"Boom!" The impact was thunderous, and the Merc Hybrid lay there, gasping for breath, unable to get up.
The instructor stepped forward, raising a hand to signal the end of the match. "Winner: Kazuichi!"
Kazuichi stepped back, breathing heavily, his heart pounding in his chest. He had won—but it had been a close call. The strange feeling that had washed over him during the fight still lingered at the back of his mind, unsettling him.
As the Merc Hybrid was helped off the field by the instructors, Kazuichi turned to see his friends watching him with a mixture of relief and concern. Arisu hurried over to him, her eyes filled with worry.
"Kazuichi, are you okay?" she asked, her voice soft but urgent. "You didn’t look well out there for a moment."
Kazuichi forced a smile, though the unease still gnawed at him. "I’m fine. Just a little tired, that’s all."
Jurou clapped him on the shoulder, grinning despite his own concern. "That was one hell of a fight, man! You took down a Merc Hybrid! Not many can say that."
Lea nodded in agreement, though her gaze lingered on Kazuichi’s face, searching for any signs of weakness. "You fought well, Kazuichi. But don’t push yourself too hard. We still have more matches to go."
Kazuichi nodded, grateful for their support. But deep down, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. The dizziness, the nausea—it had come out of nowhere, and he didn’t know what had caused it.
Before he could dwell on it further, the instructor’s voice rang out once more, drawing everyone’s attention. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"Next match: Kazuichi vs. Ayaka!"
Kazuichi’s heart skipped a beat as he heard the announcement. Ayaka. His friend, his comrade in arms. They had fought side by side for so long, and now they were being pitted against each other in a sparring match.
Ayaka stepped forward, her expression calm but determined. There was no fear in her eyes, only resolve. She met Kazuichi’s gaze and nodded, a silent promise that they would give it their all, no matter what.
Kazuichi took a deep breath, steeling himself for the fight to come. He couldn’t afford to let his guard down, not even against Ayaka. He had to be ready for anything.
As they took their positions on the sparring grounds, the tension in the air grew thicker, the crowd falling silent in anticipation. This match would be different from the others. It wasn’t just about winning—it was about proving themselves to each other.
The instructor raised his hand, his voice ringing out clearly. "Begin!"
For a moment, neither of them moved, each waiting for the other to make the first move. Kazuichi could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on him, but he pushed it aside, focusing on the fight.
Ayaka was the first to act, her movements swift and precise. She closed the distance between them in an instant, her fists flying in a blur of motion.
"Whap! Whap! Whap!" The sound of her strikes cutting through the air was sharp and deadly.
Kazuichi barely had time to react, blocking and dodging as best he could. Ayaka was fast—faster than he had expected—and her attacks came with a force that belied her slender frame.
But Kazuichi wasn’t about to let her overwhelm him. He countered with a series of his own strikes, each one aimed with precision and power.
"Crack! Crack! Crack!" The sound of their fists clashing echoed across the sparring grounds.
The fight was intense, each of them giving it their all. They moved in perfect sync, their attacks and defenses flowing seamlessly from one to the other. It was like a dance, each of them anticipating the other’s moves and responding in kind.
But as the fight wore on, Kazuichi began to feel the strain. The strange sensation he had experienced earlier started to creep back, his limbs feeling heavy and unresponsive. He pushed through it, refusing to let it slow him down, but it was getting harder to ignore.
Ayaka noticed the change in him, her eyes narrowing in concern. She pressed her attack, hoping to end the fight quickly before Kazuichi’s condition worsened.
But Kazuichi wasn’t ready to give up. He dug deep, drawing on every ounce of strength and determination he had left. He countered Ayaka’s attacks with renewed vigor, his fists moving in a blur.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!" The sound of their blows landing echoed across the sparring grounds, the intensity of the fight reaching its peak.
But as Kazuichi launched his final attack, aiming for Ayaka’s chest, his vision blurred, and the strange sensation overwhelmed him. His fist missed its mark, and he stumbled, his body refusing to cooperate.
Ayaka saw her opportunity and moved in for the finishing blow. But instead of striking him, she stopped just short, her hand hovering inches from his chest.
"Kazuichi!" she called out, her voice filled with worry. "What’s wrong? You don’t look well!"
Kazuichi tried to respond, but the words wouldn’t come. The world around him seemed to tilt, and he felt himself falling, the ground rushing up to meet him.
Before he hit the dirt, strong arms caught him, and he looked up to see Jurou’s concerned face hovering above him.
"Kazuichi, hang in there!" Jurou said urgently, his voice filled with worry. "We need to get him to the medical tent, now!"
As the world around him faded to black, Kazuichi could only hope that whatever was happening to him wasn’t serious. But deep down, he knew that this was only the beginning of a much larger challenge.
