Chapter 209: A State Of Clumsiness

The morning sun bathed the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold in a soft, golden light, filtering through the high windows of the dormitory where Kazuichi and his group were staying. Kazuichi sat up in bed, still feeling a bit disoriented from the events of the previous night. His body ached, but there was something else—an odd sense of strength that coursed through his veins. He couldn’t quite place it, but it was like an energy thrumming just beneath his skin, ready to burst out at any moment.

He rubbed his temples, trying to shake off the lingering fatigue. "What a nightmare," he muttered under his breath. The memory of being overwhelmed by zombies, fighting for control over his own body, still lingered in his mind. But the strange calmness that followed, the acceptance of the storm... It was all too surreal.

As he swung his legs over the side of the bed, he noticed the floor beneath his feet. It had cracked, thin lines spider-webbing out from where he’d stepped down. His eyes widened in disbelief.

"Did I do that?"

He tentatively stood up, half-expecting the ground to give way beneath him. Nothing happened, and he breathed a sigh of relief. But as he reached for the glass of water on the bedside table, it shattered in his hand, spilling water all over the floor.

"What the—?"

The door to the room creaked open, and Jurou poked his head in. "Morning, Kaz. You up for—"

Before he could finish, Kazuichi reflexively turned towards him, his hand reaching out in greeting. "Morning, Jurou!"

But instead of a friendly pat on the shoulder, his hand landed with a solid thud, sending Jurou stumbling backward, clutching his shoulder in pain.

"Ow! What the hell, Kaz? Did you have to hit me that hard?" Jurou grimaced, rubbing his sore shoulder.

Kazuichi’s face went pale. "I-I didn’t mean to! I just... I don’t know what’s going on."

Jurou eyed him warily but then forced a smile. "It’s fine, just... be careful, yeah? You’re stronger than you look, apparently."

Kazuichi nodded, though his mind was racing. Something was definitely off. He tried to move cautiously, deliberately taking lighter steps, but every movement felt like it required a conscious effort to rein in his newfound strength.

As they made their way to the cafeteria for breakfast, Kazuichi found himself in a constant state of hyper-awareness. Every step felt heavy, every breath too deep, every gesture exaggerated. He tried to pick up a piece of toast, only to crush it into crumbs in his hand. The utensils bent out of shape with the slightest pressure, and even the chair creaked ominously when he sat down.

Arisu watched him with a mix of concern and amusement. "Kaz, are you okay? You’re acting... different."

Kazuichi let out a frustrated sigh. "I don’t know what’s happening. Everything feels... off. Like I can’t control my own strength."

Lea snickered, leaning back in her chair. "Well, maybe you just bulked up overnight. Got those super-soldier vibes now."

Ayaka, however, wasn’t laughing. She studied Kazuichi with a serious expression. "It’s not normal. Something happened to you last night. That fever... It did more than just wear you out."

Kazuichi frowned, recalling the feverish heat that had consumed him. "I felt like I was burning up. But now... I don’t feel sick. I just feel... different."

Jurou, still rubbing his sore shoulder, chimed in. "Different how? Stronger?"

"Yeah," Kazuichi admitted. "But it’s more than that. It’s like I’m not used to my own body anymore."

As they continued to eat—or in Kazuichi’s case, attempt to eat—he couldn’t help but notice Ryuunosuke sitting at a table across the room, his sharp eyes fixed on him. There was something in his gaze, a knowing look that made Kazuichi uneasy. It was as if Ryuunosuke was silently observing him, waiting for something to happen.

Ayaka followed Kazuichi’s gaze and noticed Ryuunosuke as well. "He’s been watching you since you got here," she whispered. "Do you think he knows what’s going on?"

"I don’t know," Kazuichi replied, trying to ignore the weight of Ryuunosuke’s stare. "But I intend to find out."

Breakfast ended with a few more mishaps—Kazuichi accidentally breaking a chair, knocking over a table, and nearly injuring a passing Hybrid with a plate that slipped from his hand. Each incident only added to his growing frustration and confusion.

As they left the cafeteria, Kazuichi caught Ryuunosuke’s eye again. This time, the stronghold leader gave him a slight nod, as if to acknowledge something only he understood.

"What’s his deal?" Kazuichi muttered under his breath, clenching his fists in an attempt to control the tremors of power that surged through him.

Jurou, ever the optimist, shrugged. "Maybe he’s just impressed by your new strength. Or maybe he’s trying to figure out how you suddenly became a one-man wrecking crew."

Arisu laughed, though there was an edge of nervousness in her voice. "Well, whatever it is, you’d better get a handle on it before you accidentally tear down the entire stronghold."

Kazuichi tried to smile, but the unease in his chest wouldn’t go away. Something had changed in him, and while the others could joke about it, he knew that whatever had happened was far from normal. And Ryuunosuke’s watchful eyes only made him more certain that there was more to this than met the eye.

Later that day, Kazuichi found himself wandering the stronghold grounds, trying to clear his head. The sky was clear, the mountain air crisp and cool, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was looming over him—something beyond his control.

As he walked, his thoughts kept returning to the nightmare he’d had, the voice that had granted him strength, the storm that had seemed to merge with his body. Was it possible that the fever had triggered some sort of transformation? And if so, what did it mean for him?

He stopped by a small training ground, where a group of younger Hybrids were sparring. Watching them, Kazuichi couldn’t help but feel a pang of envy. They moved with precision and control, their movements fluid and natural. But for him, every action felt like walking on a tightrope, where one misstep could send him tumbling into disaster.

Lost in thought, he didn’t notice Ryuunosuke approach until the stronghold leader was standing beside him. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

"Quite a morning you’ve had," Ryuunosuke said, his voice calm and measured.

Kazuichi glanced at him, unsure of what to say. "Yeah... you could say that."

Ryuunosuke studied him for a moment before speaking again. "You’re experiencing a surge in strength, aren’t you? It’s not uncommon after a fever like yours."

Kazuichi frowned. "You mean this has happened before?"

"Not exactly," Ryuunosuke admitted, folding his arms across his chest. "But I’ve seen similar cases. It’s a rare occurrence, usually triggered by extreme stress or exposure to certain elements."

"Elements?" Kazuichi echoed, his mind flashing back to the storm in his dream.

Ryuunosuke nodded. "There are forces in this world that we don’t fully understand, Kazuichi. The meteorite you heard about is one of them. It’s possible that your body has undergone some kind of reaction, a transformation that’s heightened your abilities."

"But why now? And why can’t I control it?" Kazuichi asked, frustration seeping into his voice.

"Control takes time," Ryuunosuke replied. "And understanding what’s happening to you is the first step. I suggest you focus on mastering this new strength. You’ll need it for what’s to come."

Kazuichi looked at Ryuunosuke, searching for answers in his enigmatic gaze. "And what exactly is coming?"

Ryuunosuke’s lips curled into a faint smile, one that didn’t quite reach his eyes. "You’ll find out soon enough."

With that, he turned and walked away, leaving Kazuichi standing there with more questions than answers. The stronghold leader’s words echoed in his mind, mingling with the fear and uncertainty that gnawed at his insides.

Whatever was happening to him was only the beginning. And as much as he wanted to deny it, Kazuichi couldn’t shake the feeling that his life was about to change in ways he couldn’t even begin to imagine.
