Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 215: Kazuichi’s Solo Mission
The sun had barely crested the horizon when Jurou, Arisu, and the others arrived at the notice board. The camp was already bustling with activity, but there was an undercurrent of tension in the air. The Hybrids had all felt it—the shift in atmosphere, the sense that something significant had happened. Jurou, usually calm and composed, was anything but as he scanned the crowd for a familiar face.
"He’s not here," Arisu murmured, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the area. She could feel it too, that something was off. "Where is Kazuichi?"
The question hung in the air like a storm cloud. The group exchanged worried glances, the realization dawning on them that their friend was nowhere to be seen. The notice board loomed ahead, a cluster of Hybrids gathered around it, discussing missions in hushed tones. But Kazuichi was nowhere in sight.
As they approached the board, a Hybrid turned to them, his expression a mix of sympathy and surprise. "You’re looking for Kazuichi, right?" he asked, his voice low.
Jurou’s eyes narrowed, suspicion creeping into his tone. "Where is he?"
"He’s already left," the Hybrid replied, shrugging. "He took a mission this morning and headed out."
Thud.
The sound of Jurou’s heart dropping echoed in his ears, a cold wave of anger rising in its place. He clenched his fists, the muscles in his jaw tightening. "What do you mean, he left?" His voice was sharp, each word laced with barely contained fury.
The Hybrid took a cautious step back, sensing the danger in Jurou’s stance. "I mean, he picked a mission and went out on his own. Said he was ready."
"That’s impossible," Jurou spat, his disbelief giving way to anger. "He wasn’t ready! He was still recovering! Who let him do this?"
Without waiting for an answer, Jurou stormed through the crowd, his eyes locking onto Ryuunosuke, who stood calmly by the notice board, watching the scene unfold. Jurou didn’t hesitate—he grabbed Ryuunosuke by the collar, his voice a low growl. "What the hell is going on? Why weren’t we told about this?"
Thump.
The impact of Jurou’s grip against Ryuunosuke’s chest sent a ripple through the crowd. The other Hybrids paused, their attention drawn to the confrontation. Ryuunosuke, however, remained unfazed, his expression calm as he looked down at Jurou.
"Kazuichi made this decision on his own," Ryuunosuke replied evenly, his voice steady despite Jurou’s grip. "He’s resolved to prove himself, just like the rest of you."
Jurou’s eyes flashed with anger, his grip tightening. "You think that’s an excuse? He’s not ready! He could get himself killed out there, and you just let him go?"
Ryuunosuke’s gaze didn’t waver. "He’s stronger than you think, Jurou. I’ve seen it. He’s been struggling, yes, but he’s learned to control it. This is his test, just as it is yours."
Jurou’s breath came in short, angry bursts, but he could see the truth in Ryuunosuke’s eyes. Kazuichi had chosen this path, just as he had chosen to keep them in the dark about it. But that didn’t make the anger and fear any easier to swallow.
Arisu stepped forward, placing a hand on Jurou’s arm. "Jurou, let him go. This isn’t helping."
Jurou hesitated for a moment before releasing Ryuunosuke, his hands trembling slightly as he stepped back. "You should have told us," he muttered, his voice low but filled with bitterness.
Ryuunosuke straightened his collar, his gaze softening slightly. "I understand your anger, but Kazuichi wanted to do this on his own. He didn’t want to worry you. Besides," he added, looking at the group, "this is a competition. You all have the same chance to prove yourselves. I suggest you take it."
The weight of his words settled over the group like a heavy blanket. The competition—their own trials—suddenly felt more real, more pressing. Jurou’s anger simmered beneath the surface, but he knew Ryuunosuke was right. Kazuichi had made his choice, and now it was their turn to do the same.
Arisu looked at the others, her expression a mix of resolve and concern. "If this is what Kazuichi wants, then we should respect it. He wouldn’t do this without a reason."
The others nodded, albeit reluctantly. They trusted Kazuichi, even if they didn’t fully understand his motives. There was an unspoken agreement between them—if Kazuichi believed this was the right path, then they would support him, even if it meant letting him go alone.
Jurou exhaled sharply, trying to release the last of his anger. "Fine. But if anything happens to him..."
"He’ll be fine," Ryuunosuke said, his tone firm. "And so will you, if you focus on your own missions. The notice board is open. Choose your tasks, and prove that you’re ready."
The group exchanged looks, the tension slowly giving way to determination. They couldn’t afford to dwell on Kazuichi’s choice; they had their own battles to fight. Arisu stepped forward first, scanning the missions on the board with a sharp eye. She quickly found one that suited her abilities—a supply retrieval mission in a high-risk area. Without hesitation, she tore the parchment from the board.
"I’ll handle this," she said, her voice steady. She turned to the others, offering a small, encouraging smile. "We’ll see each other when the day ends."
One by one, the others followed suit, each choosing a mission that matched their strengths. The sound of parchment tearing was the only noise that broke the silence, each rip a reminder of the challenges they were about to face alone.
Jurou was the last to approach the board. He stared at the remaining missions, his mind racing with thoughts of Kazuichi. His hand hovered over the options before he finally grabbed one—a mission to clear out a nest of infected in a nearby sector. It was dangerous, but it was the kind of challenge he needed to clear his head.
Rip.
The sound of the parchment tearing felt final, like the closing of a Chapter. Jurou folded the paper and tucked it into his pocket, his resolve hardening. Kazuichi had chosen to fight his battle alone, and now Jurou would do the same.
As the group prepared to depart, Ryuunosuke watched them with a keen eye. He could see the mix of emotions in their faces—fear, determination, anger, and hope. These Hybrids were strong, but they were also still learning, still finding their way in a world that demanded more from them than they were ready to give.
Arisu was the first to step away, her eyes briefly meeting Ryuunosuke’s. "We’ll be back," she said, her voice calm but resolute.
Ryuunosuke nodded. "I know you will. Remember, this isn’t just about survival. It’s about mastering yourselves. Trust in your abilities, and don’t let fear control you."
With that, Arisu turned and headed toward the camp’s exit, her footsteps light but purposeful. The others followed, each moving in a different direction, their paths diverging as they ventured into the unknown.
Jurou was the last to leave. He paused at the edge of the clearing, his eyes scanning the horizon as if hoping to catch a glimpse of Kazuichi. But there was nothing—just the vast expanse of forest that lay ahead, filled with dangers they couldn’t yet comprehend.
Crunch.
The sound of Jurou’s boots on the gravel road was the only noise as he began his journey. His thoughts were a whirlwind of emotions, but he forced himself to focus. Kazuichi had made his choice, and now it was time for Jurou to make his.
As the camp disappeared behind him, Jurou couldn’t shake the feeling that this was a turning point—one that would change them all in ways they couldn’t yet understand.
The world beyond the camp was harsh, unforgiving, and full of threats that would test them to their limits. But it was also the place where they would find their true strength, where they would discover who they really were.
