Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 226: Teamwork
The heavy scent of decay clung to the air as Kazuichi and Himeno wandered through Sector 12, their footsteps echoing softly against the cracked pavement. Even under the midday sun, the place felt desolate, as if the land itself had been abandoned long before the outbreak. Buildings stood in ruin, their foundations barely holding, while old machinery lay scattered, half-buried in rubble. Still, the real threat lurked beneath the surface, in the shadows.
Himeno glanced sideways at Kazuichi, her hand resting casually on the hilt of her blade. "You really think we’ll find anything here?" she asked, her voice low, almost a whisper against the silence around them.
Kazuichi’s sharp gaze darted from side to side, scanning every corner of their surroundings. "We’ll find something," he replied, his tone certain. "Scouts don’t make mistakes about a nest. There’s always something."
They passed by an old warehouse, the kind of place long forgotten by the world. The windows were shattered, and the walls bore deep scars from some long-ago battle. A gust of wind kicked up a swirl of dust and papers at their feet. Still, something felt off—something more than just the eerie silence that had settled over the sector.
Suddenly, Kazuichi stopped. "Did you hear that?" His voice dropped to a hushed whisper, his entire body tensing as he listened closely.
Himeno frowned, pausing beside him. "No, what—"
Clang!
The sound of metal clattering from inside the warehouse sent a ripple of unease through the air. Both of them froze, their eyes locked on the building. It wasn’t the sound itself that was alarming—it was the slow, deliberate rhythm of it, as if something, or someone, was moving inside.
"That’s no Aberrant," Himeno muttered, already drawing her blade. Her muscles coiled, ready to spring into action.
Kazuichi nodded grimly, electricity already crackling at his fingertips. "We might’ve found our zombies."
Moving in silence, they approached the warehouse. The door creaked as Kazuichi pushed it open, revealing the dark interior. The air inside was thick with dust, and the dim light filtering through the shattered roof barely illuminated the rows of rusted shelves, crates, and debris scattered across the floor.
Krrr...
A low, guttural growl echoed from deeper within, reverberating off the metal walls. Himeno tensed beside him, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the darkness. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
"Definitely zombies," she whispered, her grip tightening on her weapon.
Kazuichi took a deep breath, steadying his nerves. "Stay close. We don’t know how many are down there."
Together, they ventured deeper into the warehouse, their footsteps slow and careful. Each step sent small vibrations through the floor, alerting them to the fact that the structure was less stable than it seemed.
Kazuichi’s heart pounded in his chest as they reached the back of the warehouse. There, partially obscured by a collapsed shelf, was an old trapdoor—its edges lined with thick layers of dust, but the padlock had been recently broken. Someone—or something—had gone down here.
Himeno glanced at him, eyebrows raised. "Think this is the nest?"
Kazuichi knelt down, examining the lock. "It’s definitely something."
Krrrrrraaah...
The growl from below was louder now, and the stench of decay wafted up through the cracks in the trapdoor. The virus pulsed in the air, like a thick, invisible cloud seeping out from beneath.
"Whatever’s down there, it’s not going to be friendly," Kazuichi muttered, standing up.
Himeno cracked a grin, her blade glinting faintly in the dim light. "I didn’t come here for friendly."
With a nod, Kazuichi yanked the trapdoor open, revealing a set of crumbling stairs leading down into a pitch-black basement. The darkness below was absolute, impenetrable even to their hybrid-enhanced vision.
Electricity sparked around Kazuichi’s hand as he summoned a flicker of lightning, casting a soft glow around them. "Ladies first?" he joked, giving Himeno a half-smile.
She chuckled, shaking her head. "How chivalrous. But no, you first. You’ve got the fancy light."
Without further hesitation, Kazuichi descended into the depths, Himeno close behind. The stairs creaked under their weight, and the air grew colder the farther they went. A strange, rhythmic thrum echoed through the underground chamber, like the heartbeat of something massive lurking just out of sight.
The basement opened up into a wide, cavernous space—far larger than they had anticipated. The walls were lined with strange growths, pulsating with a sickly green hue, while the ground was littered with bones and debris. In the center of the room, a large, writhing mass of flesh and bone slowly stirred, surrounded by smaller forms.
Omega Zombies.
KRAAAHH!
The ear-splitting screech tore through the chamber as the closest zombie reared up, its eyes glowing with a dull, malevolent light. The other zombies stirred, their bodies twitching unnaturally as they rose from the shadows.
Himeno’s blade was out in an instant, her eyes narrowing. "Looks like we found the nest."
Kazuichi didn’t hesitate. "Let’s clean it up."
CRACK!
Lightning erupted from his hand, arcing across the room and striking one of the Omega Zombies directly in the chest. The creature convulsed, its body jerking wildly as the electricity coursed through it, but it didn’t fall. Instead, it let out a bloodcurdling screech and lunged at him with terrifying speed.
THUD!
Kazuichi barely dodged in time, rolling to the side as the creature’s massive claws slammed into the ground where he had just been standing. "Damn, these things are fast!"
Himeno was already on the move, her blade cutting through the air with deadly precision. She sliced clean through the neck of another zombie, its head toppling to the floor with a sickening squelch. But even as the body crumpled, more zombies surged forward, their eyes burning with unholy fire.
"We need to take out the big one first!" Kazuichi shouted over the din of battle, electricity crackling around him as he prepared another attack.
Himeno nodded, dodging a swipe from one of the smaller zombies. "You handle the lightning, I’ll go for the legs!"
KZZT!
With a flick of his wrist, Kazuichi unleashed a bolt of lightning that struck the largest Omega Zombie square in the chest, its grotesque form writhing under the assault. But it wasn’t enough to bring it down. The creature roared in defiance, charging at him with terrifying speed.
Kazuichi grit his teeth, focusing on his water element. "Let’s see how you handle this!"
WHOOSH!
A torrent of water erupted from his hand, slamming into the Omega Zombie with the force of a tidal wave. The creature staggered, its footing slipping as the ground beneath it turned slick and unstable. Himeno seized the opportunity, darting in low and slicing through the creature’s legs with a single, precise strike.
CRACK!
The Omega Zombie toppled forward, crashing to the ground with a deafening roar. Kazuichi didn’t waste a second, charging forward and delivering a final, thunderous strike to the creature’s head. The impact sent a shockwave rippling through the air, and the zombie let out one last, pitiful wail before it fell silent, its body dissolving into a pool of blackened ash.
Panting, Kazuichi wiped sweat from his brow, his body still buzzing with the residual energy of the battle. "One down."
Himeno stood over the remains of another zombie, her blade dripping with dark ichor. "Only about a dozen more to go."
KRAAAA!
The remaining Omega Zombies surged forward, their screeches filling the chamber as they closed in on the pair. But Kazuichi and Himeno stood their ground, side by side, ready for whatever came next.
With a glance at each other, they nodded in silent agreement.
It was time to finish this.
